Over 50’s raise the Bar at Gransha’s June Derby
Week 3 of the June Derbys took place at Gransha Equestrian Centre on Sunday 21st. Putting our younger riders to shame were the highly competitive lady riders in the over 50’s class. Rosemary McDonald, Judith Bankhead and Valerie McKie all jumped foot perfect first rounds in the testing track designed by Adrienne Stuart. Overall placings were decided by a timed round over a shortened course. Producing a faultless round in a very fast time was Rosemary on the attractive chestnut mare ‘Sasha.’ ‘Song of Sixpence’ and Valerie sped round and clinched 2nd place just ahead of ‘Polly’ and Judith for 3rd.
As the weeks have progressed so has many of our horse and rider combinations. One example of this has been Lindsey McMullan and her lovely coloured mare ‘Lady.’ They have gone from strength to strength and produced the winning round in the 70cm class. Sharon Lappin and ‘Tori’ took 2nd place while Paulene Foster and the ever consistent ‘Maddy’ claimed 3rd. Caitlin McKechnie and her pony ‘Fat Boy’ continued their winning form to take the honours in the junior 70cm category.
Megan Dunn and ‘Chilli Night’ made light work of the 20 varying obstacles that made up the derby track to win the 80cm class. Michelle McConnell and her talented bay gelding ‘Bob’ took 2nd just ahead of Ian Jones and ‘Ebony.’
Jumping into pole position in the 90cm class was ‘Oh Dear’ and Albert Lowry. They sailed round the course and left all the fences standing. Hannah Ewart and ‘Brandy’ had to settle for 2nd place just ahead of Nicola Jellie and ‘Lucy’ in 3rd.
Vicky Dobbin and the very talented ‘Bella’ won the 1m class while Cheryl Smyth and ‘Casanova’ took the honours in the 1m10 just ahead of Neil Marsh with ‘Charlie.’
