Eventing at Picturesque Tyrella
The backdrop of the snow-clad mountains of Mourne, the lapping waves of the Irish Sea on Tyrella beach and the bright spring sunshine was picture perfect for the start of the Northern Region’s Eventing Season. One could easily have lapsed into a piece of escapism when just a few miles down the road, the fields were still white with snow.
The going on the Georgia Stubington-designed course was perfect. The number of entries was reduced on previous years mainly due to the impact on local riders of lack of training and exercising because of the recent snow. However, there was a strong presence of Southern riders who certainly enjoyed the challenges of the three tracks which were built by Adam Stevenson and incorporated the new ‘John Martin Chase Fence’- a fence provided by the ‘John Martin Memorial Fund’ in memory of John who was a very enthusiastic eventing competitor, EI Committee Member and organiser of many Horse Trials at Longhurst.
The top class of the day was the HitAir O/CNC** class which was won by Ciaran Glynn on Laura Glynn’s 8 year old Master Imp gelding, Killossery Jupiter Rising, being one of only three combinations to complete on their dressage score. Following just under two penalty points behind was the fairly new partnership of Joseph Murphy and Westwinds Hercules, an 8 year old Ramiro B gelding owned by Alison Schmutz and Andrew Tinkler.
The CNC** class which saw Jim Newsam provide the only clear showjumping round, was won by the early leader, Steven Smith, who certainly had another very good day at the office with four placings. He won the class on his own 9 year old gelding by Renkum Valentino out of Renkum Inglewood and was followed closely by Suzanne Jordan on Rose de Courcy-Wheeler’s Phineas Finn.
The Under 25 CNC* class was won by Co Kildare’s Robert O’Callaghan on his mother’s 11 year old High Roller gelding, Cashlyn Cavalier who finished on a very impressive dressage score of 27.5 after an expensive showjumping fence down relegated the early leader, Katie Nolan, into 2nd place.
Meantime Rosie Alcorn made a great start to her Eventing Year with a win in the O/CNC* on the very reliable Gina Johnston-bred Fiorell, adding nothing to her flatwork mark and finishing less than a point clear of second placed Steven Smith on Ken Woods’s Loughanmore Rock n Roller. The CNC* class was very competitive and saw victory going to Co Monaghan’s Meghan Healy on her father’s 7 year old Luidam gelding, Lui D who led from start to finish, chased very closely by Lesley Webb on Yvonne Pearson’s Kilpatrick Lord.
A few cross country slip ups by the dressage leaders, paved the way for Lydia Dawson to pick up the CNCJ* red rosette on Gloster Boy, finishing one and a half points clear of Daniel Brown and Ricardo Colour.
The CNCP** class became sadly depleted, mainly due to riders have participated the previous day at the rescheduled Ballindenisk, and finished with just two competitors. The class was won by Kate Gibney from Ratoath, Co Meath on Carrenhill Bobby.
Prospective competitors in the Sportsman A class were seriously affected by the heavy snowfall of the previous week which hampered training and exercising and, consequently, there were just two competitors but plenty of friendly banter as Denis Currie and Vicky Clegg went head-to-head. However, it turned out to be Denis and Bering Strait’s’s day as they led from the outset and finished on their dressage score of 28!
Elaine Gardner made a welcome return to the new Eventing Season with a win in the Sportsman B section on her very reliable grey gelding, Da Capo Two. The top four competitors added nothing to their flatwork marks with second place going to Symone Brown from Dublin on her own 9 year old Thoroughbred gelding, Me Oul Segocia.
A large Pre Novice field required a split in the class with the ‘A’ section going to Emma Jackson on her own Ronnie Hollinger-bred 6 year old gelding, Creevagh Connection. The top seven places in this class were determined purely on the flatwork marks and Dale Roberts, making his eventing debut, claimed second place on an 11 year old Ramiro B gelding, Loreto Fairo Flex.
Meantime the ‘B’ section rosette was taken back to Co Meath by Louise Duffy who always enjoys successful visits to Northern Events with her lovely bay gelding, Striking Accord, after the early leader, Emma Jackson, slipped a pole in the jumping phase which relegated her to runner-up position on Silken Allure.
The new combination of Adam Haugh and Twinpower soared to victory in the Junior C class, followed closely by another new duo of Susie Berry and Carsonstown Athena who had ridden an 81% dressage test but unfortunately lowered one fence which dropped them down one placing. However, both these partnerships are worth watching out for in the future.
Shannon Nelson, who had hot footed it from Ballindenisk on Friday had a great run in the CNCP* class on Knockborden Revelation, previously captained by the Junior C winner, Adam Haugh. William Tougher, who has wasted no time coming to terms with Silver Fox 111, claimed 2nd place.
Once again Eventing Ireland (NR) is deeply indebted to all our sponsors who have remained loyal over the years. Thanks, too, to Nicola Manningham Buller and her family, whose meticulous planning and preparation ensured that everything ran very smoothly on the day. Thanks also to all the ‘unsung heroes’ – our volunteers who did sterling work at their various posts.
Photographs on the day were taken by Sporting Images and these can be viewed on their website, www.sportingimageni.co.uk .
Action this week continues at Tyrella where Catherine Abbott takes over as Local Organiser.
