Christmas ‘Workers’ at Connell Hill
Connell Hill hopes Santa was not short staffed as ‘Workers’ arrived to enjoy a show with qualifying classes for the N.I. Festival and Equifestival in memory of James Wray with proceeds to Chest, Heart and Stroke Association on Saturday. The helpful, friendly, relaxed atmosphere which extends throughout the year at Connell Hill welcomed all competitors inciting those comparatively new to competing in Working Hunter Classes. Judge, Alison Farley and Scribe Joanne Harper had the early morning call of judging the horse classes and what a difficult task this was with high calibre entrants. We all want a hero and what a way to commence the show with Nuala McNally taking the first red rosette of the day in the 4 year olds class on ‘Haleys Hero’ with Lisa Allen taking first in the 70 cm class on the festively named ‘Holly’. It was then a red ribbon day for Peadar McLaughlin taking first in the 80 cm class on ‘Echo Hill’ and first in the Small Hunter class on ‘Rademon Kiana’. Running away with first place in the 90 cm class was Lisa Allen on ‘Dolly’ with Peadar McLaughlin again picking up red for first place in the 1.0 m class on ‘Rademon Kiana’ to conclude the horse classes. Judge Marina Wray and Scribe Peadar McLaughlin then had the arduous task of judging the high standard of jumping and showing during the pony classes which had only minimal points in the placings. Proudly standing first in line for the x-poles was Holly Logan on ‘Peter Pan’ who also took first in the 30 cm class on ‘Monarch’. The 50 cm Cradle Stakes saw Cameron Weatherup on ‘Timmy’ pick up first with Alex Byrne then claiming first on ‘Willow Wisp’ in the 60 cm class and Rachel Blaney on ‘Seaview So So’ standing in poll position in the 70 cm class. As the show progressed one could only admire the true dedication to this elite equine sport that these young future athletes devote their time to as turn out of rider and pony was most impressive. Taking the honours of first in the 80 cm class was Jodie Creighton on ‘Rickamore Malachi’ with Gaby Morgan claiming first in the M & M 90 cm class and 90 cm open qualifier aboard ‘Manninard Sir Ganty’. The show then progressed to the 1.0 class which saw Eve Donnelly claiming her red for first on ‘Clononey Jazz’ and Thomas Watt claiming red for his first to end the show on ‘Tilly Trotter’. Connell Hill would like to thank Judges Alison Farley, Marina Wray, Scribes Joanne Harper and Peadar McLaughlin, staff and helpers and last but not least yourselves the competitors and Wish everyone a Happy Christmas with a Prosperous New Year and see you all back in the not too distant future as we will be hosting our ‘Auld Land Sang Derby’ on Sunday 28th December, 60 cm – 1.0 m, tracks a combination of show jumping and working hunter fences.
