Local Riders Perform Well at Ravensdale Lodge
Derry’s Daniel Coyle may have been the man on form at Ravensdale Lodge last Sunday as he collected his third Spring Tour Grand Prix in a row at the centre but it was local riders who won the lion’s share of the prize fund in the early classes. Talented young rider, Ellie Hughes from Carlingford got the ball rolling in the 1m class riding her father Godfrey’s Electric Butterfly clear in the quickest time, the pairing stopping the clock in 33.48 seconds. Hailing from Warrenpoint, Co. Down an equally talented young rider, this time Adam Morgan riding his own Sarco Pride put in a steady clear to finish second, the time 36.68 seconds, Mary Mc Shane from Castleblaney was third on MMS Camilla breaking the beam in 37.49 seconds, fourth place went to Katie Kiernan with Sheer Illusion while two other local riders, Andrea Mc Parland and Lorraine Mac Guinness from Dundalk slotted into fifth & sixth respectively on Creevagh Ferros Diamond and Russian Gold respectively. April Mc Crea from Mayobridge, who regularly helps with the course building at Ravensdale Lodge put her knowledge of the indoor arena to good use when she won the 1.10m class on her mother Wendy’s Baby Blossom, the winning time 34.34 seconds. Mc Crea also picked up the prize money for sixth place on the same owners Bob. Isla Savage riding her own Least Said slotted into second place in a time of 35.44 seconds while Philip Mc Guane riding Barry O’ Connor’s Dressel came home third, the time 36.01 seconds. Ravensdale rider, Michael Mc Aleese came home fourth on his own The Sweeper while the 1m class winner Ellie Hughes mopped up some more prize money by finishing fifth in the class, this time on board Gucci Lady, this one owned once again by her father Godfrey.
Ravensdale regular, John Floody was quickest round the 1.20m track on the Carroll Produce LTD’s Castleroche La Roche, the Slane riders’ winning time 35.02 seconds. Ryan O’ Neill teamed up with Crossmaglen owner Roisin Hughes to come second in the class on board Hughes’ Roxborough Jimmy Choo, their time 36.90 seconds. Keeping it local, Dundalk native Aoife Kelly was third in the class with her own Carte D’or in a time of 37.68 seconds. Francesca Caravelli was fourth in the class with Cuba Libre 20 while Vickie Anderson slotted into fifth with Zack and Christopher Megahey picked up sixth place prize money on Rickamore Royal. The afternoon had been building up nicely for the main event and it certainly did not disappoint. With large numbers in the three preceding classes and some great jumping the surfaces were in super shape helped by regular maintenance between classes. A healthy 40 starters went to post of the 44 declared entries, with some of the riders including Daniel Coyle, Liam O’ Meara, Conor Mc Enaney, Edward Butler & Thomas O’ Brien having double or multiple entries. Ray Buchanan had set the tracks for the day and all bore his usual stamp of asking fair questions of both horse & rider in the relative classes. Buchanan must have been left wondering if he had miscalculated the test being asked in this 1.35m Grand Prix as the first two horses into the ring went clear under Daniel Coyle & Edward Butler respectively. As the class went on and the story unfolded it took some time before another combination left all the poles up but in the end he must have been happy with the 11 of the 40 entries that did make it into the jump off, 25% is around the magic number that course designers look for and it could not have been any closer. Ominously for the rest of the field Daniel Coyle had managed to get all three of his horses into the jump off while Thomas O’ Brien, who had won the Spring Tour Grand Prix held in Kildare the previous day would end up double handed in the decider. With only four going clear in the jump off, it seemed at one point that it would be a perfect weekend for O’ Briens as he sat in first and second place with two clear rounds on Ullrich, his winner from the day before & Amaretto respectively. Local riders would once again have something to say in the outcome of the class as young rider Conor Mc Enaney, who had been placed in the first two legs of the tour, most notably second the day before in Kildare. Mc Enaney, riding his father Peter’s Moonlight Cavalier split O’ Briens two mounts by slotting into provisional second place in the time of 40 seconds dead. Ravensdale Lodge is a happy hunting ground for this talented young rider as he &
Moonlight Cavalier picked up their very first big class win at the May Grand Prix show at the centre when they won the MSL Mercedes-Benz 1.20m final. No one was counting their chickens just yet as the combination that had made the indoor arena at Ravensdale Lodge their own over the past two seasons had yet to enter the arena. Daniel Coyle & Uptown girl were last of the 11 to take it on and there was an air of inevitability around the place as the combination came in and surveyed the course. As with everything that is done well, their round seemed effortless, only one major turn and everything in between like clockwork Coyle & Uptown girl made a small piece of history by winning three consecutive Spring Tours at Ravensdale Lodge in a time of 37.21 seconds, shaving nearly three seconds off the second placed combinations best. Thomas O’ Brien had to settle for second and fourth while Conor Mc Enaney was delighted with his third place on his home turf. Coyle was naturally delighted with his three in a row at Ravensdale Lodge and while he may be favourite to follow this win up with a trio of Spring Tour League victories he might not have it all his way. As this report goes to press, Conor Mc Enaney and Moonlight Cavalier have picked up their first Spring Tour win at Killossery Lodge in Co. Meath this afternoon (Sunday) and will give everyone a run for their money in this league. Two young riders from the Ulster region locked in a battle for the title makes good reading, competition and variety is the spice of life after all!
