Sometimes you are forced to pose the question, with the weather conditions Northern Ireland experiences why do we bother running events in the winter? Well NIWHA got an answer to that same question on Sunday 17th November when again the weather was centre stage and the topic on everyone’s lips. Why do we do it? Well plain and simply because those truly hardy people who do working hunter turn out in force to compete with their horses whatever the weather.

Yes, another big turn out for the 2nd event of the NIWHA Winter Series which this time was hosted by Laurel View Equestrian Centre. Despite Farmweek getting the ad wrong and a multitude of other events on the Sunday, entries were high and as the weather deteriorated Laurel View Equestrian Centre pulled out all the stops moving the second phase indoor, so both phases were completed in the dry.

The course at Laurel View was excellent and a big thanks to Andrew Fleming the course builder for a brilliant job. As always Andy provided a challenging but fair course which pleased both the newcomers and the professionals alike.

Our judges for the morning session of horses were Audrey and Michael Smyth, who were kept extremely busy by the volume of horses competing. Apologises go to poor Audrey, who braved the rain for most of the morning, until we moved her into the dry of arena two. Also, a very sincere thank you to Audrey and Michael, they provided the spot prize in the Cob class. Audrey is well known in equestrian circles for her wonderful ceramic horses and for Sunday she generously designed a special NIWHA COB which was won by Susie McLean and Scooby, well done to them, we’re all very jealous!

Our judges for the ponies in the afternoon were Erin Faloona and Nicky Nesbitt and they remained totally dry throughout the eleven pony classes. Thank you to them for their hard work and support to our younger competitors.

The Irish Draught Society and NIWHA continue to work together to promote our most traditional breed as a working hunter horse and we are pleased that the IDS are continuing to provide the highest placed Irish Draught horse in each class with a rosette throughout the Winter Series.

NIWHA were delighted to have our newest sponsors along to join us on the day. Joanne Armstrong, one of Northern Ireland’s foremost equestrian artists well provide a commissioned study of one of our member’s horses as a prize for the end of the Winter Series and we are all very excited by the prospect of winning the opportunity to have our horse immortalised on canvas.

Equi-Tog was on hand to provide the photography on a day then the light was really bad, but Tom stuck at it in the hope of some pictures! Email address: tom@equi-tog.com

Thank you to all who support the Winter Series, we look forward to seeing everyone at Connell Hill Equestrian Centre on Sunday 8th December for what will be our last show of 2013, so there will be lots of spot prizes to be won on the day. Ponies in morning, horse after 1.00pm, see you there.
