£1500 Grand Pony Show at Connell Hill
All roads led to Connell Hill as young athletes arrived and prepared to jump at this prestigious £1500 Grand Prix Pony Show. These young competitors, who turned out in style, displayed a calm, professional demeanour as they walked the courses designed by Will Crean who once again demonstrated his vast experience. The novice classes got under way with cheering and applauding encouraging these young stars over the courses.
The riders in the bigger classes were asked to demonstrate their control and precision over much more technical tracks which provided jumping of the highest standard. The Under 10’s class, kindly sponsored by Kids Equestrian, The Beeches, 10 Ballysculty Road, Muckamore, Antrim, Co. Antrim, BT41 4QU, saw some hair splitting rounds but Niamh McEvoy on ‘Rossco Diamond’ took first place with a very close second going to Karla O’Donnell on ‘Rickamore Gameboy’. The action packed 128 cm 90 cm class sponsored by John Mulholland Motors Ltd, 211a Castle Road, Randalstown, Co. Antrim, BT41 2EB had spectators jumping out of their seats as competitors stormed their way over the course with Amy Roberts on ‘Billy Two Rivers’ receiving first prize from Mr John Mulholland.
The highly competitive 128 cm 1.0 m class, again sponsored by John Mulholland Motors Ltd, Randalstown, was won by Jodie Creighton on ‘Oopy’ as they cut corners just that little bit tighter taking fractions of the leading time. EJC Contracts Ltd, 49 Fruithill Park, Belfast, Co. Antrim, BT11 8GE very kindly sponsored the 138 cm 1.0 m class which once again saw spectators on the edge of their seats when competitors entered the arena for the jump off with Beth Doherty on ‘Razorlite’ taking the honours of first place. Rockfield Developments, 27 Greenmount Terrace, Ballymena, Co. Antrim, BT43 6BY were the sponsors of the 138 cm 1.10 m class which saw huge excitement and exceptional rounds of jumping from these young riders as they displayed skills way beyond their years and none so much as Beth Doherty again winning first place, this time on ‘X Scream’ and second place on ‘Beauty’.
As the day moved forward to the 148 cm classes spirits were still high as EJC Contracts Ltd, Belfast, was again sponsoring the 1.10 m class which saw some super jumping as riders used full scope of the arena earning Nicholas Farr on ‘Cwmdwyfran Noson Dywyll’ a very deservedly first place. D.B. Tiles & Bathrooms, 12 Meadow Road, Moira, Craigavon, Co. Armagh, BT67 0HH, was the sponsor for the last class of the day, the 148 cm 1.20 m class. Riders in this class stepped up their game as the course reached optimum height with Richard McIvor stealing the show by achieving first and second place on ‘Blidworths Fluffy Ducking’ and ‘Classiebawn Scardens Jack’. Well done to all competitors.
