The Alltech/Gain Autumn Grand Prix League Two Day Show held at Kernan Equestrian Centre, Crossmaglen on Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th October was very well supported. Fortunately the good weather on both days was an added bonus to the occasion.

Saturday
Saturday’s jumping kicked off with the 1 metre class with four combinations dividing 1st prize. In the 1.10m class 1st prize went to Emmet Mc Court on his mother Patricia’s Latika. The first two competitions were sponsored by Walter Russell..
The 1.20m & 1.30m classes were sponsored by David Prentice BMW. The 1.20m was won by fifth to jump Peter Smyth on Kg Star. Peter managed to hold on to his early lead throughout. Even though Sinead Loughran on Flight Connection and Carol Armstrong on Cornascreebe did their best to better his time they both settled for dividing 2nd & 3rd prize, both finishing on a time of 27.82 secs. In the main event of the day the 1.30m only seven competitors managed to produce double clears the first of these by Peter Smyth on Almiro whose time of 28.02 secs was soon beaten by David Prentice’s Butuela partnered by Suzanne Posnett in a good time of 34.26 secs giving her 2nd place. Sharon Gallagher finished up 3rd on Zuidam in 35.72 secs but still to go was winning duo Peter Smyth and Cool A tee whose brilliant time of 28.02secs gave them their second red rosette of the day.

Top place in the first event of the day, the Savage Bakery sponsored 1.10m class went to Mark Murphy on Tom McGuinness’s Dunsoghy Foxy. Mark also won this competition the previous year on the same horse. Lucy Mulligan was in the money again taking 2nd place on Great Spirit as she had done the day before in the same class.. Barbara Allen was 3rd on Judy Murphy’s Javas Keltic Summer. .
The 1.20m class sponsored by Dev Oil proved a very exciting competition with a high standard of jumping. Of the eighteen combinations to produce double clear rounds James Chawke, third to jump threw down the gauntlet early in the competition getting off to a great start finishing on a time of 26.62 secs. Things really started to hot up with seven out of the last eight going double clear one of whom was Mark Murphy on Tommy McGuinesses’s Dunsoghy Foxy. Mark‘s fantastic round in a time of 24.57secs, shaving 2.05secs off his rival’s time ensured him his second win of the day. Connor McEneaney on his father’s Moonlite Cavalier took 3rd place in a very good time of 27.09secs. The 1.30m class also sponsored by Dev Oil was well supported with fourteen combinations completing faultless rounds.. Edward Butler’s early round on Sumas Arkiology in a time of 23.46secs was looking good until his brother Alexander on Lowhill Ambassador’s performance in an excellent 22.66secs put him into pole position. Also yet to jump was the young rider Connor McEnaney whose time of 23.01secs on Moonlite Cavalier assured him of 2nd place with the 1st and 3rd places going to Alexander and Edward Butler respectively.

The eagerly awaited main class of the weekend the Gain/Alltech Grand Prix League sponsored by another local company Golden Irish Eggs, Oram, Castleblaney kicked off in good time. Only four out of 33 starters made it to the jump off with several combinations having the tricky first fence down in the first round. The substantial jump off track built by international course builder Tom Holden proved very challenging with Alexander Butler on Will Wimble managing to record the only double clear of the competition in a time of 37.09secs to take home the coveted 1st prize. This was the third time in four years that Alexander won the Autumn GP at Kernans. This leaves the Meath rider joint second on the leaderboard along with Cavan winner Michael Duffy. Regular winner here Sophie Dalm and Valiant S were unlucky to have a pole on the ground as their time of 34.76 secs was the fastest of the jump off but Sophie seemed very happy with her second place. Edward Butler on Crosstown Skylight was 3rd in a time of 38.22secs with one fence down. Linda Courtney and H Two took 4th place in 40.62 secs. Frank Curran the fastest 4 faulter from the first round was 5th and Dermott Lennon also a 4 faulter in the previous round took 6th place whose 3 points was enough to move him to the top of the leader board.

Alexander received his winner’s rosette from Grand Prix sponsor Adrienne McGuinness of Golden Irish Eggs.
James Kernan of Kernan Equestrian Centre wishes to extend his sincere thanks to all the sponsors for their continued support and generosity, John Chambers for his informative and professional commentary and all those who contributed to the success of the 2 day’s jumping.
