Record Entries at Banbridge Show
There was a great carnival atmosphere at The Meadows Equestrian Centre for Banbridge Two Day Show run by the Iveagh Showjumpers. There were bumper entries in all classes, enjoying the superb courses in the two wonderful arenas where the variety and colour of fences was spectacular.
Saturday was reserved for horses with the master class being the 1.30m (S) Ulster Region Grand Prix. With almost 70 starters, it was guaranteed to be an exciting competition. Ray Buchanan, Course Designer and Show Director, built a testing track which saw 18 go through to a jump off. The pathfinder, Peter Smyth set a blistering pace on Hilary Duncan’s Diamond Courage, and completed clear in a very good time which put pressure on the ensuing competitors, most of whom faulted. Gareth Clingan eventually took over the lead from Peter with his own 8 year old gelding, Senor D and his time wasn’t overtaken until Daniel Coyle took to the arena with Cormac McElroy’s 9 year old mare by HHS Br Charlton. He left nothing to chance, taking all feasible turns, shaving over 6 seconds off the lead time. Many others tried to do likewise but paid the penalty. However, Kelda Morgan, who had the advantage of a late draw, put up a great attempt and slotted into second place on William Lapsley’s Touchdown gelding, George. It was a thrilling competition with a nail biting finish and a great result for Daniel Coyle who is having another fantastic season.
Sunday saw some super Pony jumping and some amazing jump off classes which saw spectators gathered 3 deep around the entire perimeter of the arenas.
Iveagh Showjumpers would like to thank the McCusker Family for the use of what is undoubtedly a top class venue. Thanks, too, to all the Judges, Course builders, Starters, Office Staff and everyone else who made the past weekend such a successful one. Local Charities will benefit from the proceeds of the Show.
