N.I.W.H.A. Reinstates the Two Day Spring Show
Congratulations to all those who managed to win a Championship at the all new two day Spring Show held at The Meadows Equestrian Centre on Saturday 13th and Sunday14th April 2013.
The Spring Show has not been run for several years so the new format of one day of horses and one day of ponies was a new venture with the idea of making competing as user friendly and safe as possible and to allow members and non members alike the opportunity to do working hunter and showing on the same day.
Over the two days fifty three classes were contested, eight championships handed out and four supreme champions crowned. Class winners and runners up enjoyed prize money and the rosettes went down to sixth. The Champions and Supremes received beautiful sashes for their trophy cabinet.
Horses were on Saturday 13th, with a packed day including nine working hunter classes and thirteen show classes. There was something for everyone, from the showing side saddle and working hunter side saddle, to show hunter, riding horse, veteran, sportsman and maxi cob through to a full range of working hunter classes.
The venue, Meadows Equestrian Centre, provided two rings for the working hunter, a ring for showing and two separate warm up arenas, which allowed the show to flow from class to class without delays. The surfaces were perfect, with showing and the second phase of working hunter enjoying the best of grass surfaces, while the working hunter phase one jumped on the brilliant all weather surface which Meadows is renowned for.
Our hosts, Hugh and Aaron McCusker, were on hand to assist with every detail and ensure that N.I.W.H.A. had everything to make the event a success. Aaron was the course builder for the two days and despite the weather over the two days, provided a challenging course appropriate to end of the series and valuable training with NI Festival and Balmoral Show in mind. All the committee would like to thank the McCusker family for their assistance over the weekend and the N.I.W.H.A. are delighted to be able to bring Working Hunter to the Meadows Equestrian Centre.
Over the two days our judges gave every competitor their full attention, the ride judges, the conformation judging, all of the highest standards. N.I.W.H.A. is dedicated to providing judges that are appropriate to the occasion and would not be familiar to competitors. To achieve this, judges were brought from England, Scotland and South of Ireland. A huge thank you to the judges, Marian Slattery, Andrew Gardham, Susie and Phil McMillan, for all their hard work through out the two days. The judges were delighted by the standard of horse and the turn out of the competitors, expressing a wish to be asked to come again.
Thanks also to our two volunteer scribes, Aoibheann Morgan who scribed in the rain for the horses all day Saturday and Pam Brookfield Donald who stood in the gale force winds of Sunday to scribe for the ponies.
The show started on the Saturday at 9.00am, horses leading the two days with four year old show hunters in the show ring and performance and side saddle in the working hunter ring. The weather was bright if somewhat breezy, and both Horseworld NI and Equi-Tog Equestrian Photography struggled with their marquees and displays, eventually having to admit defeat to the wind and remove anything that wasn’t ‘nailed down’! The committee would like to thank Vicky of Horseworld NI and Tom of Equi-Tog for their support throughout the winter series.
By lunchtime the rain had replaced the sun and by tea time everyone was totally soaked but twenty three classes had been won, three championships settled and two overall supreme champions crowned. Congratulations to everyone who defeated the rain to compete and enjoy their day out.
The next morning was Pony Day and the weather was being its usual miserable self, with wind and rain but by 10am it had given way to sun but again the wind had no intention of easing and became a major challenge over the day. Meadows Equestrian were determined that the wind would not prevail in its attempt to sabotage the day. The show ring was moved to get more shelter and as fences blew
over in the working hunter ring, the format of the fences and the course was altered.
The ponies began, in the show ring, with the Show Pony Lead Rein, followed by another five ‘junior’ classes and culminated with the Mini Championship, the first of five championships on pony day. In the Working Hunter arena there was a performance class followed swiftly by 70cms through to the one metre class. The afternoon was given to the younger working hunter competitors, with lead reins, intro working hunter to the young pony finishing off the show.
These shows would never happen without the dedication of a small team of volunteers who have worked tirelessly all winter series long. A very special Thank You to Richard Nesbitt for transporting jumps many miles and helping build our courses, Simon Wylie who sacrificed competing to look after the courses during the series and must have lost count how many poles he has picked up and replaced, Sarah and Tori who have scribed and been runners, in all weathers, without complaining, throughout our series. The N.I.W.H.A. events would not have happened or run so smoothly were it not for these four people and the committee is indebted to them.
NEXT EVENT:
N.I.W.H.A. look forward to our next show which is our biggest event of the year N.I.W.H.A. Championship Show 2013. Details of this event will be available shortly on the website and in the press and we look forward to a huge three days of competition in July.
