Ireland Finishes Joint Fourth in Drammen Nations Cup
IRELAND finished joint fourth in the three-star Drammen Nations’ Cup in Norway on Friday on a team total of 16 faults, alongside France.
The competition was won by an experienced Netherlands team on just four faults, with Denmark second on eight faults and Italy third with 12 faults. Eight nations competed.
Highlight of the Irish performance was a double clear round from Capt. Brian Cournane and the nine year-old Irish Sport Horse Javas Keltic Mist, both making their debut at Nations’ Cup level. Javas Keltic Mist had competed successfully on the Irish national circuit before moving up to international classes.
Show jumping team manager Robert Splaine said afterwards: “We had three horses making their Nations’ Cup debut here at Drammen, with one rider competing in his first Nations’ Cup, and two in their second Nations’ Cup.
“Capt Brian Cournane had a day he will always remember. To jump a double clear with Javas Keltic Mist on their first attempt in what was a tough Nations’ Cup was an outstanding achievement.
“Michael Duffy is 18 and a prospect for the European Young Rider Championship squad. He took the opportunity well and this will stand to him for challenges ahead.”
“A particular word of thanks to the owners of all the horses of the six squad members here at Drammen.”
