The 2015 Connolly’s RED MILLS Munster Grand Prix league gets underway on Bank Holiday Monday (4th May), at Ballylawn, Kill, Co Waterford, the home of reigning champion Francis Connors.
The series will visit shows throughout the Munster province during the coming months, with €2,000 on offer at each venue. A total of thirty-nine horses and riders have declared for the Ballylawn opener and having seen his home county lift the National Hurling League title on Sunday after a comprehensive victory over Cork, Francis Connors will be hoping for another win for the Deise, as he saddles no less than four horses in the grand prix.
The Connolly’s RED MILLS league format has been slightly altered for the year ahead, meaning points will be awarded to the horse and rider combination and not the rider on their own. This could open the door for someone with just one top horse to win the title outright, although once again Francis Connors and Seamus Hayes are expected to be among those fighting for overall honours.
Fresh from winning the Connolly’s RED MILLS/HSI Spring Tour, Liam O Meara is also likely to feature highly, along with a large group of up-and-coming young riders who will no doubt push the more experienced professionals every step of the way.
Meanwhile Ballylawn will also host the opening leg of the new €20,000 FBD Speed Series. Jumped as a two-phase competition over a course of fences set at 1.20m this new initiative further increases the prize-money on offer at Munster Shows and should prove exciting for spectators.
Ballylawn Show gets underway at 10am on Monday, with a full range of horse and pony classes for all levels.
