Breen Takes Weekend’s Biggest Prixe Pot with Victory in Spain
SHANE Breen grabbed Ireland’s biggest prize pot of the weekend so far when finishing first in Friday’s feature class at the five-star show jumping fixture in La Coruna, Spain.
The Tipperary rider out-jumped a top 38-strong field to collect 30,000 euro with a double clear round on the nine year-old stallion Farao van’t Vennehof, with just over a tenth of a second in hand over German runner-up Philipp Weishaupt and Chico.
It has been a successful and profitable weekend to date for Irish riders abroad, with Wexford’s 19 year-old Bertram Allen being voted Thursday’s Rider of The Day at the five-star show in Geneva after a win in the opening international class with High Valley (2,000 euro) and then a fourth place on Molly Malone V (16,500 euro) in the Credit Suisse Grand Prix, which was won by the USA’s Lauren Hough and Ohlala.
Mayo’s Cameron Hanley lifted a further 16,500 euro in prize money with a second place in today’s speed class at the Swiss stadium aboard Caretina De Joter, losing out by a mere 0.09 of a second to German star Ludger Beerbaum and Leonidas 100.
Top ten places at Geneva yesterday also went to Billy Twomey aboard the Irish Sport Horse Ardcolum Duke and Thomas Ryan with Caribo, who took sixth and eighth respectively in the Two Phase competition.
La Coruna’s 500,000 euro Longines Grand Prix takes place on Saturday evening, while Geneva’s 750,000 euro Rolex Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
