Equine Seminar This Thursday at Down Royal Racecourse
Developments to change the way we work with horses!
Rachel McGuigan, Equine Technologist, CAFRE
An “Advances in Equine Husbandry” seminar hosted by the College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) on Thursday 21st March at 7:30pm at Down Royal Racecourse, The Maze, Lisburn, BT27 5RW will highlight the recent technical advances of equine products in the market.
Dr. Barbara Murphy from UCD will be discussing the Equilume Mask which is an ingenious device to regulate a mare’s breeding cycle. The Equilume, a light-controlling face mask eliminates the need for overhead lighting to control a mare’s cycle. It can also be used to reduce gestation periods in mares, treat jet lag in horses, and encourage hair shedding earlier in preparation for the show season. It does all this by providing a low level of light into one eye.
Andrew Poynton FWCF (Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers 1998) has practised farriery since 1980 and is a well known and respected farrier in the UK. Andrew specialises in remedial farriery with interests ranging from orthopaedic work, work with young stock and management of subtle lameness in competition horses. Andrew will be discussing severe laminitic cases, for which his innovative thermoplastic Imprint support shoes were first designed. Andrew is an Executive member and Examiner for The Worshipful Company of Farriers and handles referral work from veterinary practices throughout the UK.
Connor Maguire from CAFRE will discuss an equine technology project which is currently running at Enniskillen Campus, comparing bedding alternatives such as Miscanthus and Oil Seed Rape straw, Wood pellets and shavings. There will be an opportunity to discuss the implications of different bedding materials for labour, convenience, usage amounts and comfort for the horse.
After the talks, there will be time to go around a number of stalls and talk to exhibitors and discuss their products. Trade exhibitors include, The Smart Bunker, Equissage, StudShu, Baileys Horse Feeds, Mount Mills Cold Pressed Flax oil, Equilume & Imprint Shoes.
