Ladies ‘Reign High’ at Connell Hill’s SJI Show

| May 15, 2014

connellhillWith sport and fitness high on the agenda over the weekend a large number of competitors travelled to Connell Hill for the second week of the May SJI Horse League where fitness is an absolute must for both horse and rider.  Each competitor had an adventure as they entered classes encountering extensive courses which demanded skilful riding as they made their tour over the tracks.  These tracks built with every care and attention to detail gave riders the opportunity to display these talents and prove just how much ability combined with agility these majestic animals have.  This show commenced with the 80 cm class which saw Connor Stewart, from Magherafelt, demonstrate ‘Derganagh Hill’s’ ability jumping double clear.  It was then double clears in the 90 cm class for Brian Smyth, from Newtownards, on ‘Iroko Quarry Diamond’, Pauling McKeown, from Randalstown, on ‘Miss Darcy’ and Clare Spillane-Pattison, from Tobermore, on ‘Cor De La’.  Will and the arena crew then adjusted the course for the 1.0 m track which saw Ellen McCollum, from Limavady, on ‘Co Co Chanel’ jump the first double clear followed by David Taylor, from Castledawson, on ‘Cheberlinus T’.  The day just continued to get more exciting as the courses were adjusted and competition rose with ladies taking control and ‘reigning high’ in the 1.10 m class taking the pole positions.  First place was claimed by Helen Pearson-Murray, from Newtownards, on ‘I Aint No Tinker’, second and third place awarded to Lisburn Lady Lisa Allen on ‘Keeford Elamo’ and ‘Diamond Dollie’, fourth place Helen Pearson-Murray on ‘I Aint No Lady’, fifth place was then claimed by Kathryn Watt, from Cullybackey, on ‘Derg Bonnie Rose’ and sixth to Clare Sloan, from Lisburn, on ‘Rose of Lennon’.  As the 1.20 m class got under way Simon Scott decided ladies watch out here I come as he claimed victory on Stephen Lowry’s mare, ‘Dullerton Eclipse’ with Claire O’Hara, from Coleraine, picking up a very close second on ‘Tiffcrum Penny’ and third on ‘Captain Oates’ with Clare Sloan, from Lisburn, fourth on ‘Rose of Connaught’.  The heavy rain down pours did not deter riders taking the challenge of the 1.30 m class with Simon Scott ducking and diving as he navigated his way over the course to claim the honours of first place on D L McConnell’s, mare, from Omagh, ‘Carnoneybridge Diva’ and Edward Little jumping into second place on ‘Galwaybay Hummer’ owned by Sarah Agnew from Kells.
