The Hardy Working Hunters Turn Out in the Rain

The weather continues to dampen everyone’s spirits but the show must go on and on Sunday 10^th February the N.I.W.H.A. returned to Danescroft Equestrian Centre, Lisburn for the first time in many years. Danescroft had been were ‘Workers’ had begun many years ago so there was a touch of nostalgia in the air, along with the rain!

The jumping was indoors and the ponies were lucky enough to get to do their phase two indoors as well. Unfortunately the horses and their judges in the afternoon were not so lucky and were outside in the rain for their ride out.

NIWHA would like to thank our pony judges Hilary Gibson and Jennie Dornan and to our horse judges Malachy Casement and Sarah Whiteside for their dedication and continuing their work despite the conditions. We all tend to take for granted the effort judges make to attend our events when it would be so easy to sit at home in front of the fire! Their support is most gratefully appreciated by the N.I.W.H.A.

Ponies were in the morning and again the lead rein class was very well attended, a great credit to the parents and handlers for such well presented turn outs on such a miserable day. All our other pony classes were well supported proving the weather in no barrier to our younger competitors.

In the afternoon the horses showed the same determination to beat the weather, from the four year old class to 1.10 everyone gritted their teeth and got on with it. The 80cms class was as usual very popular with competition very strong to get qualifications for Northern Ireland Festival in April.

We are pleased that show on show our memberships continue to rise but we are particularily delighted that our members are turning out in force to take advantage of the courses and venues which we are providing for their training. Many non members are attending also and we are glad to have their support and would encourage anyone who fancies trying working hunter to come along and we will assist you any way we can.

Thank you to Danescroft Equestrian centre for their arenas, thank you to our course builder, Alastair and the team who transported, and helped build, our fences on Saturday and attended all day Sunday.

NIHWA welcomes anyone to our events, whether you would like to come along and try Working Hunter for the first time or you are a seasoned competitor, our classes provide something for everyone.
