With winter closing in quickly on us, and wondering what to do, why not take the opportunity to improve your equine knowledge and gain a qualification. Toni Donnelly will be giving practical weekly sessions on basic horse management and welfare, plus a weekly evening programme for those keen to gain their BHS Horse Owners Certificate Level 1

The basic horse management practical sessions are designed for beginner adults or perhaps your spouse or your child has a horse and you are interested in familiarising yourself with the basics in a relaxed environment. The sessions covers how to approach a horse safely, how to groom and tack up properly, how to lead a horse correctly, become comfortable around horses in the field and in the stable, loading for travelling, basic rules of feeding. A lot of parents are left to get ponies ready for shows etc hence show preparation for all disciplines will be covered in detail. The sessions are progressive and planned for a Thursday morning starting the end of October. Yet if this day is not suitable there is flexibility in order to cater for folk working etc.

The BHS Horse Owners Certificate Level 1 is the first of four levels which cover the theoretical aspects of horse care. Courses include at least six modules providing all of the information required to pass the examination at the end of the course. You do not have to own a horse, the course is primarily aimed at the first time horse owner, parents of horse owners or potential owners, they are available to anyone interested in the care and welfare of horses. This first evening session is scheduled for Wednesday the 23rd of October and will continue weekly till the 18th of December.

With her extensive experience as an equine lecture, BHS instructor and continual success in the showing field, she is decided to run these lessons to share her knowledge with the equine public. Toni who is known for her working hunter clinics is now based on the out shirts of Saintfield, Co. Down.  Her clinics and demo’s are very popular and educational, and last weekend Toni spent it with Killossery Riding club near Swords in Dublin putting their riders through their paces. This Sunday Toni is holding a showing demo at Lessans Riding Centre starting at 12 noon with lunch included.

Toni in conjunction to her WH clinics and demo’s, also teaches freelance to groups and privately. Also now taking in horses for competition livery, preparation for next years season.
