The start list for the MSL Mercedes-Benz Autumn Grand Prix which was published on Thursday 12th September set the tone for what was to come over the following days at Ravensdale Lodge. A very high calibre entry of 42 which included four from the Minister Of Defence, three each from 2002 world show jumping champion Dermott Lennon, Peter Smyth , Edward Butler, Ger O’ Neill, Jordan & Daniel Coyle, a couple from John Floody & Sven Hadley, throw in the current Olympic bronze medallist Cian O’ Connor for good measure and you have a cocktails for a serious class. The podium at 6pm on Sunday evening read a who’s who of world class show jumpers but more of that later.

The weekend show started on Saturday 14th September and the centre basked in glorious autumnal sunshine all day. Ray Buchanan set the test for the six classes on the day which were held in the extended all weather fibre sand arena at Ravensdale Lodge. The first two classes of the day, the 90cm & 1m were divided among the clear rounds and results of these two classes can be seen below. Quinn’s Flight, ridden by Enda Ivanoff won out in the first two of the timed classes, the 1.10m and the 1.20m. Stopping the clock on 34.42 seconds and 40.15 seconds respectively Ivanoff saw off Paul Carroll riding the Carroll Produce LTD’s Castleroche La Roche in the 1.10m class and Ballagh Montana ridden by A. Byrne in the 1.20m class. Third place in the 1.10m class went to Jo Anna Robinson who rode her own Alabama Slammer to go clear in the time of 35.72 seconds while third place in the 1.20m class went to the David Garrigan owned and ridden Father’s Touch.

The last class of the day was the 1.30m class which was won by Gareth Nethercote on board Rossco, the combination stopping the clock on 46.35 seconds. Dermott Lennon got his weekend underway by finishing second in the class, partnering Lisa Rosbotham’s Calgot Pleasure to go clear in the time of 48.42 seconds, more tellingly Lennon also slotted quietly into fourth place in the class on the horse he would win Sunday’s Grand Prix on, his wife Sandra’s Vampire. Talented young rider Conor Mc Enaney is no stranger to the podium at Ravensdale Lodge having won and placed in many big classes at the centre, Mc Enaney was third in the 1.30m class on his father Peter’s Moonlight Cavalier, the pairing stopping the clock on 48.71 seconds. Show organisers had a big decision to make after the last of the 200 odd entries jumped. The outdoor fibre sand arena had jumped so well on the day with many of the riders expressing the opinion to remain outdoors on Sunday however the weather forecast for the following day was not as good as it was on Saturday. After a quick phone call to the Met Office and meeting of show officials the decision was made to jump again in the outdoor arena on Sunday with the option to move indoors should the weather take a turn for the worse.

As it happened the right decision was made with Sunday starting off dry with only the occasional blustery shower getting in the way of the afternoon sunshine. Once again Ray Buchanan set the tracks for the four classes which started at 9am with the 1.10m class. Young rider, April Mc Crea from Mayobridge Co. Down was absolutely thrilled to win the class on her mother Wendy’s Bob, the winning time 35.30 seconds. Second in the class was Judy Murphy’s Javas Keltic Summer which was ridden by Barbara Allen, the partnership stopping the clock on 35.95 seconds, Edward Little got off the mark for the day by slotting into third on L. Allen’s Diamond Dollie, the time 36.01 seconds. James Chawke left all the poles up in the quickest time 35.76 seconds when partnering the LFS Sport Horses’ Zelise to win the 1.20m class. Second in the class went to young rider from Dundalk Mark Murphy who partnered Horseware Ireland’s owner Tom Mac Guinness Dunsoghly Foxy, their time 36.14 seconds while third went to Jordan Coyle with J. Carr’s Anehoon Van Der Kapel in the time of 37.16 seconds. From there on in it was the Dermott Lennon show as the 2002 world show jumping champion from Banbridge Co. Down won the two remaining classes of the afternoon. Lennon got the ball rolling in the 1.30m class, winning it on A. Davidson’s A Ulisina 66 in a time of 34.94 seconds. James Chawke kept up his good run of form by partnering another of the LFS Sports Horses offerings, this time Available RV to take second place in the class in a time of 35.23 seconds while Jordan Coyle finished third again in this class, this time with J. Carr’s Fanadwest Dancer, the time 38.27 seconds.

The big guns had been around for most of the day and some had been there for the weekend so as the 1.30m class finished around 3pm and course changes were made in preparation for the main class of the afternoon, the MSL Mercedes-Benz Autumn Grand Prix there was a real air of expectation and the steady flow of spectators who had gathered all afternoon were not disappointed. With such a star studded cast of competitors, as the class commenced, one got the feeling that there was more at stake than the €3000 prize fund for the riders and that was the chance to come out on top of such an exclusive line up. The competition had been fierce all weekend and horses were jumping superbly off the fibre sand arena at Ravensdale so all boded well for a good class and this was reflected in the 15 combinations that went clear in the first round. It nearly all went in the another direction as the first two combinations to enter the fray had to leave the arena on foot as there was a parting of company between horse and rider, thankfully nothing more serious than bruised pride in each case. First to go clear over the shortened and raised Buchanan track was James Chawke who played pathfinder for the following combinations on board Zydalgo M setting the standard at 40.87 seconds which would be good enough for fourth place when the class ended. John Floody on board Eileen Duggan’s Bronson De Reve were next to go clear however Floddy, who has partnered this seven year old with great success for a numbers of years was anxious not to overstretch the horse in what was his first Grand Prix put in a cautious clear round, stopping the clock on 42.34 seconds which would be good enough for eventual firth place. Crowd pleaser and recent Longines Grand Prix Of Ireland winner Cian O’ Connor was next to go clear putting in a great effort on recent addition to his Karlswood Stables Carolus Z, the current Olympic bronze medallist stopping the clock and lowering the time on 40.28 seconds which would eventually slot him into third place. Peter Smyth who had two in the jump off had to settle for sixth and seventh in the class as firstly he opted for a steady clear with Almiro in a time of 49.07 seconds and had a pole down while having a pop at the time with Victoria Rose, the combination recording the fastest time over the shortened track with 37.81 seconds. Another to make it through to the jump off with two was Ger O’ Neill who could only fare best in eight place recording a time of 39.18 seconds with a pole down on Bolandro. Captain Brian Curran Cournane ensured that the lead changed hands for only the second time when he threw everything at it on board The Minister Of Defence’s Starboard, recording the first sub 40 second fault free round with 39.70 seconds. Dermott Lennon had the bonus of a late draw in the jump off on board his wife Sandra’s Vampire and he took full advantage of it when lowering Curran Cournane’s time to 39.55 seconds. Watching the split video later it was impossible to tell who was up in the jump off at the penultimate Botanica International fence but Lennon somehow found the time in the last turn and over the last fence to dip the head in front. It was a thrilling weekend of competition at Ravensdale Lodge with the best being saved to last on Sunday afternoon. A line up of Dermott Lennon, Captain Brian Curran Cournane and Cian O’ Connor, first, second & third in the Grand Prix certainly proves that the cream really does rise to the top.
