Charlene Wilson Show – Bigger and Better than Ever!
The annual Charlene Wilson Memorial Show was again a very successful event. With the showjumping running from just before 11.00am until after 7.00pm, and with competitors coming from all over Co Tyrone, Co Fermanagh and Donegal to support this family show, the organisers were delighted.
Arena 2 returned to Omagh District Council’s green at Ecclesville this year and the young competitors were out in force to jump their double clears in the hope of winning the new Teddy Cup, presented by the Boyd Family from Clogher in memory of a much loved grandson and nephew, Teddy Irwin. The eventual winner of this trophy was Nora McCullagh riding Miss Hakuna Matata and this was presented by Flo Barrett, a close family friend of the Boyds’.
Three other new trophies were also presented on the day, the first being the Searose Knicker Swap Challenge, sponsored by Gillian Hynes. There was much laughter as the competitors struggled in and out of an enormous pair of pink bloomers in between their showjumping rounds with the clock ticking!!. The winners of the Searose Cup were Justine Lyons and Ever so Clever and Katie McClintock and Buster.
The second new trophy was for the Newcomer Horse Class and was kindly sponsored by the Burleigh family from Fermanagh. Julie Burleigh presented the Benaughlin Shield to local girl Kyra Gilmore riding Warrenbank.
The Donkey Derby was exciting as ever and the winner for 2013 was Clabby Boy ridden by Zac Kyle. 15 beautifully turned out children and ponies lined up for the Family Pony Class, sponsored by Vera Thompson, and the winner of the Perpetual Cup for 2013 was Leah McCreery and Tornado.
The Ridden Cob Class, kindly sponsored by Kay’s Equestrian from Lack, was again a fine display of immaculately turned out cobs. The winner of the new cup was Ashley Nealy riding Coleen Lowry’s, Toy Boy.
Seamus McCaffrey designed excellent courses which resulted in numerous double clears and very exciting jump-offs in the Open Classes. As in previous years the impressive array of Perpetual Trophies was a great incentive for the competitors to pull out all the stops to have the honour of taking a trophy home!
At 3pm the Show came to a halt to remember Charlene. David Wilson was accompanied by close family and friends as Princess Mayo made the now familiar walk to Arena 2 where Micky D Logue sang and Michelle Shortt, Charlene’s cousin, spoke of her fond memories of her.
The Show then resumed and the winner of the Top Score Shield sponsored by David Wilson was awarded to Justine Lyons and her lovely coloured horse, Ever so Clever, as they amassed an impressive 860 points in this tricky competition.
The chosen charity for 2013 is the NI Cancer Fund for Children as the organisers have close links with the Boyd family and they wanted to further support the work Gail Boyd has carried out for this wonderful charity. To boost the amount raised on the day, HSBC staff member Rachel Magee, who has either competed at or helped run the Charlene Wilson Memorial Show for the past 12 years, has secured £500 for the Charity.
The organisers are grateful for all the sponsorship and to the team of volunteers that enabled them to run such an action packed and fun day in memory of Charlene and all that she enjoyed in her short life. Sincere thanks go to HSBC Omagh, AJS Promotions, Gillian Hynes, the Wilson family, Magee family, Leonard family, Lyons family, McGuigan family, Michelle O’Neill, Michaela Shortt, Tommy Peoples, Ryan Lambe, Andy Lennox and to all those who supported the raffle by donating prizes. A cheque will be presented to NI Cancer Fund for Children shortly and the organisers were delighted to have Natasha Ward from the charity at the event in Ecclesville.
