Irish Sport Horse Reserve Champion Studbook at WBFSH International Young Breeders Championships

| July 16, 2013

redmills_logoTHE Irish Sport Horse Studbook Young Breeders team, sponsored by Red Mills, put in an incredible performance at the WBFSH International Young Breeders Championships, Bollerup, Sweden, on the 12th and 13th July, to finish as Overall Reserve Champions.

Over 20 studbook teams took part in the Championships which are held every second year.  Each studbook is represented by a Senior Team (20 – 25 years of age) and a Junior Team (17 – 19 years).  Competitors are judged over a number of different sections including a theory test, judging conformation, movement and loose jumping and presenting a horse in hand on the triangle.

The ISH Young Breeders Junior Team won the Junior Competition of the International Young Breeders Championship. The winning team consisted of Alyssa O’Neill (Kildare) Caoimhe Kenny (Laois) and Orla Dooley (Kilkenny), with Ruaidhri O’Cianain (Galway) in reserve.  In addition Orla Dooley won the overall Individual Junior Championship and the In-Hand section.  Also in the Junior Competition Alyssa O’Neill finished in third place in the Conformation section.

The ISH Young Breeder Senior Team consisted of Rossa Gallagher (Meath), Iris Brazil (Westmeath) and Regina Daniels (Galway) with Ciara Greaney (Dublin).  In the senior competition Iris Brazil won the Loose Jumping division. On the combined Junior and Senior sections the ISH Studbook finished as Overall Reserve Champions, second only to the Holstein Studbook team.

Speaking on the ISH Young Breeders performance, HSI Director for Breeding and Programmes, Alison Corbally stated: “This result is a remarkable achievement for our Young Breeders who have been working very hard to prepare for these Championships. The Young Breeders Programme is a wonderful initiative for young people with an interest in developing their equestrian knowledge and skills.

“Teagasc’s Wendy Conlon and Declan McArdle deserve a huge amount of credit for the work they have put into the Young Breeders Programme. I’d also like to acknowledge Red Mills, sponsor of the Young Breeders Programme, and to thank Andrew Hughes, Co. Kilkenny, for his support of the ISH Young Breeders Team.”
