Sharon and Zuidam Sweep to Victory at Portmore
The Kane Family of Portmore Equestrian Centre hosted a very successful Two Day Show last weekend. The show incorporated the first leg of the Ulster Region 1m and 1.10m Leagues as well as the 1.30(S) Grand Prix.
The standard of jumping across the board was very high and the courses designed and built by Ray Buchanan were technically demanding and very educational.
Sunday started off with the Ulster Region’s 1.10m League which had over 50 starters. Competition was very tight and one of the early combinations, Ian Moore and Triple C set an exceptionally high standard by paring almost 6 seconds off the lead time. It was a cliff hanger of a competition and Ian held onto that lead until the very last competitor, Suzanne Posnett, entered the arena and took the course on with great alacrity which earned her the red rosette on board Karmijn.
The 1.20m class was equally competitive but very rewarding for Ashling Doherty who headed the leader board on Bon just ahead of Emily and Arraghbeg Sky. There was a large turnout of spectators for the 1.30(S) Grand Prix which got underway at 3pm with almost 40 declarations. It looked as if clear rounds were going to be in short supply as many of the initial competitors faulted at a range of fences including the diagonal vertical, vertical, oxer combination. In the end ten of the partnerships earned themselves a place in the second round jump-off against the clock. The pathfinder was County Donegal’s Sharon Callaghan who took many gravity-defying turns with Zuidam in pursuit of victory- a path which proved successful as none of the ensuing competitors were able to catch her. Closest was, undoubtedly, the happiest competitor of the day – Sara Coyle who achieved tremendous success by claiming 2nd place on her Grand Prix debut with her own gelding, Over Time.
Thank you to everyone who supported the show and to all officials who worked tirelessly over the two days.
Registered Horse Jumping continues this Sunday, starting at 10am with the 80cms and runs through to 1.30m.
Competitors please note that the dates published in the May bulletin are incorrect. The proper dates for the May and June Horse Leagues are Sundays 12, 19, 26 May and 16 and 23 June.
