Northern Ireland race-goers will have plenty to celebrate at this year’s Magners Derby with the announcement that the prize money has increased from €65,000 to a whopping €100,000.

This will be the third year that Magners has been associated with one of Northern Ireland’s most popular race day meetings with over 6,000 people expected to attend the event at Down Royal on June 22nd 2013.

Sarah Ratcliffe, Magners Brand Manager at Tennent’s NI, said: “Down Royal is a fantastic venue for both racing and socializing, making it a perfect partner for Magners – a brand that is always at the heart of social occasions.

“The Magners Derby €100,000 prize fund reinforces the event’s position as Northern Ireland’s number one sporting occasion, combining top class racing with a relaxed social atmosphere which sits perfectly with Magners – N.I’s number one cider brand.

“Just like ourselves, Down Royal is justifiably proud of its history, consistently offering something unique to the public, underpinned by excellent service and a great aura of traditional hospitality. We’re looking forward to some great entertainment and a brilliant Magners Derby, toasted of course by Magners over ice!”

Mike Todd, Manager at Down Royal Racecourse, said: “I am delighted that the prestige of the Magners Derby has been reflected in this substantial increase in prize money. The increase will attract high quality runners to our feature race of the summer season and I look forward to the large crowds on Magners Derby Day enjoying our latest improvements to the facilities at Down Royal.”
