Seems no time since spring and the last Laurel View Pounds for Points League, but here we are with the second night of the winter show jumping league well underway. Time flies when you are having fun!

Speed isn’t necessarily the best option at the Pounds for Points league as it is more important to get as many double clears throughout the league as possible to earn points to convert to pounds at the climax on 23rd December.

So come along and give the Laurel View show jumping a go on Wednesday evenings, things get going at 6pm with the 45cms, before moving on up from 60cm through to a metre.

If you can’t make it on the night, or your horse is a little too green for jumping in front of an audience, why not book in for schooling the morning after? Book through the office on 028 9083 0649.

The GAIN-ALLTECH Autumn Series Grand Prix Horse Show was hosted by Kernan Equestrian Centre on Sunday 4th October. Sunday dawned bright and sunny and the day’s sport kicked off with the 1.10m two phase class which was sponsored by Eamonn Rice Bloodstock & Shipping. Top place went to Mark Murphy on Tommy McGuinness’s Horseware Foxy finishing in a time of 23.91secs. Second place went to local woman Judy Murphy’s Candis ridden by Richard Wright in a time of 24.53secs and third to regular at Kernans April McCrea on her own Baby Blossom. April completed her double clear in a time of 26.98secs.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-873705" alt="Catherine Thornton, 3rd & 4th prizewinner in the Gain-Alltech Grand Prix. Presentation by Ciara Coryn of sponsors Golden Irish Eggs.

Next event was the 1.20m class which proved to be a very exciting class as the top three places were fought out by the last three combinations to go into the ring.

John Floody on Kieran King’s Kings Best third last to go produced what looked like the winning round, speeding round in a fast time of 27.39secs only to be pipped at the post by last to go Sean Kavanagh on Newrange Lady who clipped 0.6secs of John’s time giving him first place. Sarah Burns on Georgie’s Star second last to go produced a stylish double clear in 28.94secs giving her third place. Sean Kavanagh was in the winning lineup again with DunganCloverBridge in fourth as was Mark Murphy and Tommy McGuiness’s Horseware Kilcotrim 5th and Ellie Highes 6th on Hard Times.

First place in the two phase 1.30m class went to John Floody on Craigmanus Hold Up Diamond in a time of 32secs. Second to Aoife Dooley riding the Lennon stable’s Calgot Hero in 33.24secs and third place to April McCrea this time riding Carmenflag in a time of 33.35secs. The 1.20m and 1.30m classes were kindly sponsored by McCaughey’s 24hr Top Service Station, Broomfield, Co. Monaghan.

The eagerly awaited main event of the day the Gain-Alltech €3,000 euro Grand Prix, sponsored by Golden Irish Eggs, Castleblaney was run as a jump off class over course designer Tom Holden’s challenging course. Of the twenty five starters eleven combinations went through to the jump off . The first double clear was provided by Catherine Thornton and Derryinver Luxury Cruise in a time of 40.75 secs. Next in old hand Peter Smyth looked like he had secured the coveted first place scorching around in 39.57secs on Diamond Courage. Not be outdone was the irrepressible Alexander Butler and Ladycastle Syndicate’s Vimminka whose superb round and fast time of 39.25secs robbed Peter of first place but he seemed happy enough with second. Alexander was delighted with his win and beautiful cut glass crystal trophy presented by Ciara Coryn of Golden Irish Eggs. Catherine Thorton had a very successful show taking 3rd and 4th placse on Lowhill Glenard Lad (40.08secs) and Derryinver Luxury Cruise (40.75secs) respectively. The final two places went to John Floody riding Mise le Meas 5th in 39.66secs and Eileen Duggan’s Bronan De Reve 6th in 40.09secs.

At Laurel View on Sunday the 6th September, Grace was the name that was coming up trumps over the 45cm jumping track. With Grace Morton and Rocky taking 1st place for their clear round which was faster than Grace Hancock and William. Gracie Bright and Charlie picked up 4 faults leaving her in third place.

Over the 50cm Grace Morton and Rocky kept up their sterling performance, taking the red ribbon again. Toby Davison and Jake came a very close second, with their clear round just a shade slower.

Emma Irwin and Daisy were the top of a very strong 60cm class, thanks to a lovely clear round of jumping. Monica Conlon and Tally managed a clear 1st phase, securing her the second place spot.

Over the seventies the top rider was Coral Logue on Cassie after riding a cracking clear round. Millie and Katy Clarke kept clear off the fences too, but weren’t quite as nippy, so the blue ribbon was there.

Up to the eighties and another red ribbon for Coral Logue and Cassie, second to Coral over this course was Miriam Wright and The Castletown Lad.

The afternoon finished up with the jumps at 90cm, these were cleared easily by Michaela Murphy and Jamara to take home the red rosette and a couple of pounds cashback. Second place went to Katie McDonnell and Annaghs Prince.

Riding John Carr’s 11-year-old Guidam sired stallion, Zuidam took home the winner’s share of the €10,000 on offer in the Munster Agricultural Society sponsored class.

This is the second Premier Series win of late for the pairing having claimed victory in Omagh and as a result now sit on the top end of the Premier Series leaderboard.

Coyle said; “It was great to have another win at this level in just a few weeks. To be honest I wasn’t thinking about the league standings but the win on the day. The Premier’s are always very competitive and always up to standard so they aren’t’ easy to win. Alexander Butler and John McLaughlin had set very good times, so I just kept the pace up. I think I really made up the time in the turn back to the penultimate fence. I am looking ahead now to Balmoral and hopefully it will go my way there”.

On duty, Klaus Holle built a fair track for the 36 listed starters and with a very high standard of combinations, 14 of these proceeded to the second round.

Speed merchant against the clock, Alexander Butler set the time to beat with a clear in 41.61 seconds with Hallowberry Cruis.

Despite Butler’s good pace, his target held only temporarily as John McLaughlin and Javas Wild Child kept the rails intact in 40.34 seconds to take the lead.

Placed second in Omagh, Vincent Byrne was up for the challenge as he took it on with Caugherty, coming home clear in 42.33, saw him slot into fourth place.

Seventh to go in the jump-off, Daniel Coyle knew what was required and with a win in mind he galloped home with nothing to add in 37.98 to take the lead, leaving McLaughlin to take runner up spot and Butler third.

Also chasing valuable points, Kildare native Edward Doyle didn’t hang about as he lodged a clear in 44.20 seconds with Mullaghdrin Touch The Stars for fifth place.

Little separated the next placing as Neal Fearon and Cessina 4 put in a faultless round in 44.26 for sixth place.

TRM/Horseware Premier Series Grand Prix from Cork Summer Show 12th July result.
Sponsored by: Munster Agricultural Society.

1st Zuidam/D Coyle 0/0/37.98
2nd Javas Wild Child/J McLaughlin 0/0/40.34
3rd Hallowberry Cruis /A Butler 0/0/41.61

The longest day of the year whizzed by at the Laurel View Dressage competition, the second competition in the Summer league. Not that the weather felt particularly “summery!”

Walk/trot competitors benefited from Lucy Webbs appraising judgement for their BD Intro A tests. Gerri Harron Andrews took the first place spot on Rock Steady Teddy. Simon Wylie and Schumi rode a super test to claim second.

Debbie Osborough proved a very encouraging Newcomers judge. The best Prelim 4 test was ridden by Olivia Courtney on Rossi, with the second place rosette going to Holly Reilly and Just Jake.

Casper and Sarah Sproule capture the Class 3 prize – Photo by Equi-Tog

Sarah Sproule and Casper stepped their way to the top of the Prelim 12 class judged by Martina McKinley. Rock Black and Blue ridden by Barbara Hannah took home the blue rosette.

Class 4 judged by Will McAuley was won by Oakhill Charm and Jennifer McCann, while Sarah Sproule and River Diamond Rebel just missed out on the red rosette.

Linda McIlwaine and Beechmount Baxter were Will McAuleys Class 5, Novice 28 winners, with Elaine Williams and Emerald earning the runners up spot.

Lucy Webb judged a wide variety of classes on the day from walk/trot to medium. It was Lynne Robinson and Alfies Elementary test that was awarded the top score in the Open, with Beechmount Baxter and Linda McIlwaine taking home the blue ribbon for their novice test.

Week ending 28th June, results & report Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Event Centre.

Ravensdale Lodge held the last of their five qualifiers for the RDS Dublin Horse Show 2015 on Saturday 27th June when the centre played host to the RDS amateur qualifier. A large entry of 145 amateur riders ensured there would be a highly competitive scrap for the eight remaining places for the Dublin Horse Show in early August. There were mixed emotions along with tears of joy and regret as the three rounds progressed on the day. Many combinations had an early trip home as they incurred penalties in the first round on the Charles Hanley designed course. For the others it was an anxious wait to see if they would make it through the second round and into the jump off against the clock that would ultimately determine the eight riders who would make it through to Dublin. At the end of a long day eight relieved riders booked their ticket for Dublin while those who had come so agonisingly close after three rounds just had to come to terms with having to wait another twelve months for the opportunity to try again. Full results from this and other weekly competitions at Ravensdale Lodge can be viewed in the results section.
