Week ending 12th July, results and report Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Event Centre.

With the weeks flying by, the countdown is on to the RDS Dublin Horse Show which signals the end of Ravensdale Lodge’s spring / summer show season which commenced the last week of April. Quite a bit has gone on at the centre over those fourteen weeks with leagues for SJI registered horses & ponies, horse & pony training as well as Arena eventing taking place. Throw into the mix five qualifiers for the RDS Dublin Horse Show, three day National Grand Prix weekend, numerous “Bumper” shows as well as a Mini Grand Prix show in early July and you have a recipe for happy competitors and tired show organisers! While one season may be drawing to a close, show organisers, tired or not are putting the finishing touches to the short six week summer / autumn schedule which will run at the centre from early August to the end of September when everything moves indoors once again for the closing season of the year. Full details of this forthcoming summer / autumn schedule which will include the usual leagues and some surprises will appear in these pages next week. In the meantime competitions continue as normal over the coming weeks with SJI registered leagues for horses and ponies on Wednesday from 11am for the six modified horse classes from 80cm to 1.30m and followed by the usual modified 128cm, 138cm & 148cm pony classes at 5.30pm. There is a slight change in dates for the three remaining weeks of this league with the day changing to Thursday on Thursday 23rd July due to National Balmoral Show. Horse & pony training league continues every Friday to 31st July with the usual classes from X poles to 1.10m taking place from 5.30pm. Arena eventing continues on Saturday afternoon to Saturday 1st August from 2pm for the 70cm class, 3pm for the 85cm class and 4pm for the 1m class. Ravensdale Lodge hosted another exciting, action packed “Bumper” Bank Holiday Show on Sunday 12th July and results of this and all other weekly shows can be found in the results section below. Full details of these and all forthcoming shows can be found on the centres website, www.ravensdalelodge.com or from the office.

Week ending 21st June 2015, results & report Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Event Centre.

It was another busy week as large numbers made the most of the good weather, attending the regular weekly jumping competitions at Ravensdale Lodge. While Wednesday started grey with some drizzle the sun quickly burned the cloud away as a record entry attended the SJI registered horse & pony leagues. This league continues every Wednesday, with the exception of Wednesday 1st July until 29th July. There are the usual six modified horse classes from 80cm to 1.30m which start at 11am followed by modified classes for 128cm, 138cm & 148cm ponies from 5.30pm. Horse & ponies jump together on Friday evening as the SJI track used for professional riders is used to good effect in the horse & pony training league. This league continues every Friday to 31st July with seven classes from X poles to 1.10m and a start time of 5.30pm. Combinations looking for something a little different get to do just that on Saturday afternoon when the centre holds its weekly arena eventing league show. This clever mix of show jumps and professionally designed cross-country fences are used to good effect in an arena setting where typically there are in excess of 20 jumping efforts and an optional “joker” fence. This event is run broadly along the lines of the Young Event Horse qualifiers for both Balmoral & the RDS in Dublin as well as the qualifiers for Performance Connemara Hunter’s and Performance Irish Draught horses for the RDS last weekend at Ravensdale Lodge. It is also seen as an invaluable training ground for young or inexperienced horses by producers not to mention great fun by all who participate. This competition continues every Saturday until 1st August and has a convenient start time of 2pm for the 70cm class which is followed by the 85cm class at 3pm and the 1m class at 4pm. Combinations are reminded however that there will be no arena eventing on Saturday 27th June due to the RDS Amateur qualifiers. A full list of weekly & seasonal shows and events at Ravensdale Lodge can be found on the centres website www.ravensdalelodge.com or by contacting the office.

Week ending 5th April 2015, results Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Event Centre.

Numbers swelled last week at Ravensdale Lodge as increased numbers of competitors appeared with the return of the good weather. Thursday’s indoor SJI registered indoor horse league saw record numbers jump in the six modified classes from 80cm to 1.30m and this competition has three weeks left to run before the final on Thursday 23rd April, start time 11am. Friday evening saw another big turnout for the indoor horse & pony training league with big numbers taking on the seven classes which range from X poles to 1.10m. This league continues for three more weeks from Friday 11th to 25th April and has a start time of 5.30pm.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-759376" alt="Nicky Corr & Austin put in the first clear round of the 1m class at Ravensdale Lodge's indoor arena eventing league on Saturday afternoon.
The indoor arena eventing show on Saturday afternoon again saw combinations taking on the three classes with many coming for a final prep in advance of the first Young Event Horse qualifier for Balmoral show on Tuesday 7th April at Ravensdale Lodge. There are three weeks to run with this league which finishes on Saturday 25th April, start time of 2pm for 70cm class which will be followed by the 85cm class at 3pm and 1m class at 4pm. There was no indoor dressage on Sunday as show organisers prepared for two busy days on Easter Monday, 6th April (Bumper Easter Show) and Tuesday 7th April (Balmoral Young Event Horse Qualifier) report and results of which will be listed in next week’s paper.
Week ending 15th February 2015, results Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Event Centre.

It was a busy couple of weeks of pony jumping at Ravensdale Lodge which peaked on 14th February when the Pony Spring Tour kicked off at the scenic North Louth venue, Show organisers had broken with tradition over the preceding weeks by running two SJI registered horse & pony league shows on Sunday. The strategy paid dividend as large numbers of ponies attended on both days to warm up for the scheduled Pony Spring Tour on Saturday last. Pony riders and their entourages descended on the centre from the four corners to take part in the first of the hugely popular Pony Spring Tours on what was a lovely Spring day at Ravensdale Lodge. The centre was bathed in bright sunshine as combinations battled for early points on the Spring Tour leader board with a total of seven classes up for decision in two arenas on the day. Results from this show can be viewed in the weekly results round up from Ravensdale Lodge below. Competitions resume this week when SJI registered jumping replaces horse training on Thursday 19th February, With the second of Ravensdale Lodges national shows coming up in a week’s time on Sunday 1st March, this is an ideal opportunity for the horses to warm up in advance of the scheduled Spring Tour Grand Prix. It is also offers pony riders the chance to continue their momentum for the Pony Spring tour and early schooling for RDS qualifiers.

Modified horse classes from 80cm to 1.30m kick off at 11am while the usual modified 128cm, 138cm & 148cm pony classes commence at 5.30pm. Horse & pony training takes place on Friday evening from 5.30pm with classes from X poles to 1.10m as week four of Ravensdale Lodge’s winter / spring indoor run of shows continues. Indoor arena eventing resumes on Saturday 21st February after the break for the Pony Spring Tour. There is a start time of 2pm for the 70cm class for this show while the 85cm class has a start time of 3pm and the 1m class kicks off at 4pm. Indoor dressage resumed last week after a two week break for SJI registered jumping and entries were large in keeping with the great start to this league at the end of January with intense competition over all four classes. Indoor dressage continues on Sunday 22nd February and riders are asked to have their entries in to the office on time but no later than 9am on Friday 20th February.
All the boxes were ticked at Ravensdale Lodge as the centre commenced shows for the 2015 winter / spring indoor season last week. All equestrian disciplines were covered with everyone’s tastes being catered for from show jumping & arena eventing to dressage. Indoor show jumping commenced in the form of horse training on Thursday with many riders opting for the training route in advance of the SJI registered leagues which commence at Ravensdale Lodge with two Sunday shows on February 1st & 8th before returning to their usual Thursday slot on February 15th.

With Christmas and New Year now a distant memory as everything returns to normality after the seasonal break, show organisers at Ravensdale Lodge are applying the finishing touches in advance of the commencement of the 2015 season in a week’s time. All arenas have been worked on over the holiday period and the annual “spring clean” is nearing completion.

It is hoped to have a few new fences and arena dressing in place for the new season which commences on Thursday 22nd January with week one of four indoor horse training days where there will be six classes from 80cm to 1.30m and a start time of 11am. This will be followed by the first of the indoor horse & pony training league dates on Friday 23rd January when the usual classes from X poles to 1.10m have a start time of 5.30pm. Indoor arena eventing makes its return on Saturday 24th January from 2pm for the 70cm class, 3pm for the 85cm class and 4pm for the 1m class.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-715057" alt=" Education & training is a big part of the early season picture at Ravensdale Lodge as riders make use of the events and facilities on offer to school for shows such as the Balmoral Young Event Horse qualifier which will be held at Ravensdale Lodge on 7th April.
This popular mix of show jumps and portable cross-country fences is seen by many as an ideal training ground to gain valuable experience for young horses who will take on the various Young Event Horse qualifiers throughout the spring, the first Balmoral Young Event Horse qualifier being scheduled at Ravensdale Lodge on Tuesday 7th April . It is also a great way to put into practice the training methods learned at the various post Christmas training clinics that have been running around the country.

Another competition which should be of interest to event riders in preparation for the new season is the indoor dressage league which starts on Sunday 25th January from 2pm. The weekly tests can be found on the Ravensdale Lodge website and entries can be made right up until 9am on the Friday before competition which gives everyone a chance to make their mind up right to the last moment. SJI registered indoor leagues for horses & ponies commence with two weeks of Sunday shows on Sunday 1st & 8th of February before returning to their usual Thursday slot on 19th February.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-715058" alt="While being competitive may be the main focus of many riders, combinations also appreciate the time to relax and have fun with the facilities and range of competitions on offer at Ravensdale Lodge.
These two Sunday shows are there to accommodate anyone who want to jump at Ravensdale in advance of the Pony Spring Tour show due to be held at the centre on Saturday 14th February. There will be a start time of 11am for the horse classes which go from 80cm to 1.30m while the usual pony classes will follow after the horses but not before 2pm.

The main emphasis of the early part of the season at Ravensdale Lodge is training with most shows being geared towards preparation for the bigger shows which are to follow. Of course preparation is only one aspect of the bigger picture which is to have fun and enjoy the superb indoor facilities, great surfaces and courses which are always on hand at Ravensdale Lodge.

So whether you are gearing up for the professional show jumping or event season or a leisure rider looking for some not so serious sport then there is sure to be something to suit you on the 2015 indoor winter / spring schedule of events at Ravensdale Lodge.

It was a case of déjà vu as both Daniel Coyle and Gerard Clarke reclaimed their Spring Tour and National Grand Prix titles respectively at Ravensdale Lodge in 2014. In the case of Derry native Coyle, it was his third successive victory in the opening Grand Prix of the season at Ravensdale. More impressively, Coyle had partnered the same horse, Linzi Johnston’s bay mare Uptown Girl in all three victories.

To cap things off the combination went on to win the Spring Tour League for the third successive season in April, quite an achievement at any level for Coyle who is still in the “young rider” category. Clarke, another “young rider” claimed victory for the second successive season in the feature class of the year at Ravensdale Lodge, the Longines sponsored National Grand Prix.Clarke who is based in Co. Meath won the class on board the Eugene Hanratty owned Woodprins and collected his second valuable Longines wristwatch along with the prise fund for his efforts.

John Floody, who had brought Woodprins through the ranks as a youngster, won the last of the three seasonal Grand Prix at Ravensdale Lodge, the MSL Mercedes-Benz sponsored Autumn Grand Prix in September on board Joanne Attley’s Shenick. Based in Slane Co. Meath, Floody was particularly pleased with this win as it was the greys first Grand Prix class and the win came on “home” soil as the rider competes on a weekly basis in many of the SJI registered show jumping leagues held at the centre.

John Floody, who
won class finals in every SJI registered league run at Ravensdale Lodge in
2014 capped another good year by winning the MSL Mercedes-Benz sponsored
Autumn Grand Prix in September. Photo: Niall Connolly.

Sandwiched between these three Grand Prix classes there were five qualifiers for the RDS Dublin Horse Show along with the first qualifier for the Young Event Horse Class at Balmoral show in May, a piece of history being made as it was the first time this class had been run at Balmoral showground’s. As one door opened another closed as 2014 was deemed by the FEHL organisation to be its last. The popular Future Event Horse League had run for fifteen years with Ravensdale Lodge playing its part in the development of young event horses, many of which had gone on to greater things as the Irish studbook held a stranglehold at the top of world eventing for the past couple of decades.

Away from the bigger shows, Ravensdale Lodge held all its usual weekly shows which comprised of SJI registered shows for the professionals, horse & pony training shows, arena eventing, cross-jump and dressage for the leisure riders who are the equestrian world’s backbone. In another action packed year at the centre it is difficult to pick any one highlight as a stand out moment. It was rewarding to see two young horses, Woodprins and Shenick, horses that had been brought along by John Floody at Ravensdale Lodge do so well on the Grand Prix circuit, both winning at the centre in 2014.

It was also a great compliment to hold the first qualifier for the Young Event Horse class at Balmoral show in May while there too many wonderful moments among the many unaffiliated classes and leisure riders to mention. All part of the highs & lows, thrill & spills of day to day life at Ravensdale Lodge. We would like to wish all our customers, riders & horses alike a very Happy New Year, we look forward to all the thrills & spills 2015 has to bring.

Week ending 2nd November 2014, results Ravensdale Lodge Equestrian & Event Centre.

There was great excitement at Ravensdale Lodge on Sunday 26th October as the centre played host to its annual Bumper Halloween show. The mild weather did not deter the yearly emergence of ghouls and ghosts as a frightful mob descended on the centre like a scene from the “thriller” video! As heart rates returned to normal and competitors settled down after the initial fright the competition began and the Halloween spirit remained for the duration of the show as combinations went like “bats out of hell” to get their hands on some of the wonderful prizes on offer. Business got underway with the X poles class which was won by Lucy Bell riding Chico, second and third place were picked up by Ravensdale regulars Dearbhla Mc Gahan riding her own Giggles and Kier Gordon riding Taffy. Linda Mc Keown of Makins Horse Feeds, one of the sponsors on the day got her day off to a good start as she watched Molly Mc Goran jump her horse Holly into first place in the 60cm class. Gemma Murphy riding Silverline Lily was second while Alexandra Lee came home third in the class with Sammy. The Haire & Reel families dominated the 70cm class with Katie Haire coming home first on Thunder while brother Ally rode the same horse to take second place in the class. Erinn Reel finished third in the 70cm class with Fudge while Mum Edel slotted into fourth on her own Robin Hood. Katie O’ Hare was lucky enough to be on holiday for the mid-term break so good Pal Vicky Campbell from Rostrevor took the ride on Blaney’s Boy for her and picked up first place in the 80cm class for her efforts. To top things off, Vicky picked up third place in the 80cm class with her own Dennis The Menace while Harry Haire added to the families trawl of prizes by slotting into second place in the class and winning a nice Ravensdale Lodge saddle pad for his efforts. The next two classes, the 90cm & 1m classes belonged to talented young rider, Orla Mc Gowan as she won both classes on hers lovely grey gelding Manus Boy. Linda Mc Keown piloted her own Branchfield Boy this time to take second in the 90cm class while Harry Haire was on hand again to take third place with Gunner. Second in the 1m class went to Jenny Mc Leigh with Kerry while Michael Graham slotted into third place with A matter of fact. All in all it was great day of fun filled competition with a treasure trove of prizes which included signature Ravensdale Lodge rugs and saddle pads, Horse First & Botanica International product bags as well as vouchers from Mackins Horse Feeds and prizes from Moorhill Saddlery. There were spot prizes given out for the most “spooktacular” fancy dress outfits which were plentiful on the day. It was the last but one “Bumper Bank Holiday” show of the year at Ravensdale Lodge with the final one set to be held over the Christmas period, details to follow.

Competitions continue as normal this week with SJI registered show jumping for horses on Thursday from 11am with the usual modified classes from 80cm to 1.30m. The SJI track from Thursday’s competition is open again on Friday for the Botanica International horse & pony training league. This competition is open to all and has seven sponsored classes courtesy of Botanica International from X poles to 1.10m with a start time of 5.30pm. Horse First are the sponsors of Saturday afternoons indoor arena eventing league which has a start time of 2pm for the 70cm class, 3pm for the 85cm class and 4pm for the 1m class. This mix of show jumps and professionally designed portable cross-country fences will typically have up to 20 jumping efforts on track and sponsored class prizes courtesy of Horse First. Friday evenings indoor horse & pony training league and Saturday afternoons indoor arena eventing league are part of the “Smart Leagues” initiative which is in its second year of running at Ravensdale Lodge. There will be a number of hi tech smart tablets on offer at the finals of both these competitions in mid December and all qualified entries will be put into a draw for one of these much sought after accessories. There will be a further smart tablet on offer for the leading points combination over the course of the Botanica International horse & pony training league so weekly points are very valuable towards this fantastic prize. Further details on any of these shows or events at Ravensdale Lodge can be found on the centres website www.ravensdalelodge.com or through the office.
