The league based on the three highest ridden scores of the series, came to a conclusion with the first five horses going into the final with only a single point between them, so the title was never a foregone conclusion. On the day eight horses came forward, including unplaced point to point horses and Cheltenham champions all now standing as equals in the show ring.

Many thanks to our judges on the day Hilary Gibson (non-riding) Comber, James Jenkins (ridden) Ballyclare and Shelly Boyle (ridden), who did not have an easy task as the horses where so well presented and schooled.

As usual the retraining class started proceedings and this was won by newcomer Etain Hall-Callaghan with Ballybay moon, followed by the Open ridden class won by Joanne Quirke with ForPadydeplasterer who is set for Dublin next month.

The league winner is decided by the two ridden judges scores combined added to the existing top scores, naming the winner Forpadydeplasterer and Joanne Quirke and Reserve champion – Melanie Moorhead with Irish Twang North Antrim

Many thanks to Mike Todd, Vicky Moody and the team at Down Royal Racecourse for their continued support of the Exracehorse it is hugely appreciated by all, and competitors all took great delight in the the racecourse venue for Sunday’s final.

Racehorse to riding horse competitors had a busy weekend in the Northern region with Armagh Show’s packed programme including everything from the popular riding classes for exracers which included a qualifier for the RDS also a sidesaddle class a class for the unraced thoroughbreds and the fun event of Racehorse to Hunt which caught the imagination of the crowd.

During the same weekend, Cork Summer Show held an RDS qualifier in the Open class and they also held a retraining class.

The association is seeing stronger classes throughout the country with both quality and quantity of entrant rising and the famous horses riding against the lesser known on a level playing field

At Armagh we had the former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander and Forpaddydeplasterer in the open competition, where 15 horses fought a highly competitive class and in Cork we had Binocular a former Cheltenham winner lining up with several others to take his chance at the qualifier.

In the northern region only 5 points separated the first 6 horses and the competition as equally hot in cork the RDS Qualifiers being Paddydeplasterer with Joanne Quirke at Armagh and Binocular with Tom Busteed at Cork.

In Armagh the introduction of an unraced thoroughbred class proved popular with seven entries. Although only 5 attended it was a great start for what will become an equally polular class. The side saddle class is still in early stages while more riders learn this new skill for many and the racehorse to hunt included a jumping course which contained a hurdle set of 8 jumps, a stirrup cup and a swinging gate to negotiate had a number of entries. Due to the late start only 4 competitors stayed but our judge Louise Halford borrowed two horses and took a spin herself much to the crowds delight.

As well as the RDS qualifiers, the winners received a rug and rosette from the Irish thoroughbred Marketing presented by our representative on their behalf from the Open Classes. There are also qualifiers for the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing racehorse to riding horse 2014 from both venues. This weekend will bring the third RDS qualifier at Gorey Co Wexford on Saturday 21st June, with the final RDS qualifier being held at Adrahan Galway next month.

In the northern region we had the third round of the Down Royal Racecourse Northern Ridden League which is running very closely with the final qualifiers being at Saintfield on Saturday with Newry show and the Equi Festival on the 28th June. The final will be held at the racecourse on the 20th July 2014.

Down Royal Double for News Item with Racehorse To Ridinghorse Ireland

Previous Down Royal winner “News Item” alongside owner Louise McMinn returned to launch the Down Royal Racehorse to Ridinghorse Ireland Open League 2014.

Not only did News Item claim a Boxing Day race victory a decade ago at Down Royal and was a dual Ulster Grand National winner in 2006 and 2007, but last year relived glory and was awarded the 2013 Down Royal Racehorse to Ridinghorse Ridden Open Champion title with Louise McMinn.

The 2014 Down Royal Racehorse to Ridinghorse Ireland League will kick off on 7th June with duo Ballymoney Agricultural Show and Lurgan Agricultural Show on 7th June encompassing different areas of the Northern region, followed by the Armagh Show, Dundalk Show, Saintfield Show ahead of the final legs on 21st June at Newry Agricultural Show and The Equi Festival Cavan. The League Final will be staged at Down Royal Racecourse on 20th July.

Competitors must attend at least three outings to qualify, and the league is based upon the points awarded by the judge on the ridden section.

While a competitor may win the individual class on the overall score, the league will be based on the ridden score in line with Racehorse to Riding Horse’s objective of rehabilitation and retraining, demonstrating that the horse has settled as a general riding animal.

The Racehorse to Ridinghorse competitions are a great opportunity for riders and racehorses undergoing retraining, and as an added bonus every combination in the class will receive a pair of tickets to the Magners Race Evening on 25th July at Down Royal Racecourse.

For more information on the 2014 Racehorse to Ridinghorse Ireland League 2014 or the Racehorse to Ridinghorse Ireland programme, please contact Julie Morris on 07938569291
