17 year old Chris Megahey and his incredible Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier cleared 2.15m on Saturday evening at the Cavan International Horse Show to win the Kingsland Puissance.

The Co Antrim teenager successfully completed all five rounds of the puissance with his Irish-bred horse, known as “Socks” because of his four white legs and shared the victory with Peter Smyth.

It is only the fourth time Socks has ever jumped a big wall. He jumped 1.85m with Chris on his first wall and 2.05m the second time to win the Emerald International Puissance in 2014.

Together with Egypt’s Sameh El Dahan, Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier cleared 2.20m and became the winner of the puissance at the Dublin Horse Show in August, after Chris who at 17 was too young to compete in the class at the RDS, responded to a call on social media for a horse.

Now back home in Templepatrick at the Megahey family’s Glenpatrick Competition Yard, there is great excitement about Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier’s next competition which will see him travel to London’s Olympia Horse Show where he will partner Ireland’s top International rider Cian O’Connor.

Socks was evented by Chris’s brother Harold at three-star level and was going to be sold before his younger brother started jumping him.

Chis plans to become an international show jumper and aims to compete Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier in the Dublin puissance next year, when he is 18.

He is currently competing on the Irish national circuit with a small string of young horses and Lenny (Rickamore Royal) his national grand prix partner.

Egypt’s Sameh El Dahan took this year’s Dublin Horse Show by storm when he cleared 2m 20 on County Antrim teen, Chris Megahey’s horse, Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier to take the Land Rover Puissance and the €12,400 prize purse.

Chris, former winner of the Emerald International Puissance on Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier was too young to enter the Dublin Horse Show event. Not able to ride himself, he answered a plea on Facebook from Joanne Sloan Allen at Sycamore Stables Show Jumping Team for a Puissance horse for Sameh to ride in Dublin. Chris knew Irish bred, Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier, affectionately known as ‘Socks’ because of its four white legs was up for the job.

Sameh, the only competitor who successfully completed all five rounds of the Puissance had only ridden the Glenpatrick horse twice before Saturday’s event making the win against a strong competitive international field even more impressive.

Speaking after the event, Britt Megahey, owner of Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier and Glenpatrick Sport Horses said: “The atmosphere in the main arena on Saturday evening was electric, it was a joy to see Sameh making that jump on Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier and we were very proud to be a part of the international programme at the RDS.”

Now back home in Templepatrick at the Megahey family’s Glenpatrick Competition Yard, there is great excitement about the future of Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier.
