Offaly's Darragh Kenny kept up his recent run of good form by claiming third place with a double clear round on Caroline Loyd's gelding Sans Soucis Z, while Tipperary's Kevin Babington was close behind in fourth on the Shorapur Group's mare Shorapur, also recording a double clear in the 18 horse jump-off.

Cork's Shane Sweetnam, who was second with Beluga in Wednesday's speed class, rounded off Ireland's presence in the top five of Wellington's four-star competition tonight with a third double clear, this time riding Spy Coast Farm's stallion Chaqui Z.

The competition was won for the fifth time in the series by Canada's Eric Lamaze, aboard Artisan Farms's mare Fine Lady 5, while the runner-up spot went to Argentina's Ramiro Quintana and the mare Whitney.

Co. Down's Conor Swail also featured in the top ten of the class, taking a ninth place on Ariel and Susan Grange's stallion Grafton after dislodging a singe fence in the jump-off.

Wellington's Grand Prix takes place at midnight on Saturday, Irish time, with 95,000 euro on offer in prize money.

Spectators were treated to three days of extremely high quality competition at Portmore Equestrian Centre this weekend in newly refurbished premises. Purple was the colour of choice as a selection of new jumps courtesy of Nicholl Show Jumps joined the freshly painted purple surroundings.

Friday began with Katy Connor, Joanne Jarden and Laura Cornett in the prizes during the 90cm class. Mary McShane won the 1m class on HMS Camilla with Noel McKee and his own Keeford Athena in second place with Nuala McNally and Song of Charm in third. Sven Hadley’s winning streak began in the 1.10m class and continued all weekend in most classes. Helen Pearson Murray and I Aint No Tinker finished close behind in 2nd. Edward Little and Galway bay Hummer won the 1.20m class, while Sven Hadley finished first and third in the 1.30m class.

Saturday began promptly at 9.30am with the 1.10m league challenging all competitors. A number of young horses and experienced combinations took on Rafael Suarez’s technically demanding course. Sven Hadley and Utha repeated their performance from the day before claiming first place, Stephen Gibson and Milford Cool Flyer were second with Conor Mc Eneaney and Hold Steady in third.

James Hogg and Indicator winning the 1.20m class

The 1.20m class saw James Hogg showcase Irish breeding as Indicator won the class while his full brother Interpreter won the HSI Connolly’s Red Mills GP. Second in the 1.20 was Catherine Thornton and MHS Super Trooper, while James Hogg and Almost Persuaded took to the podium again for third.

The HSI Connoll’s Red Mills Spring Tour was hotly contested on Saturday afternoon as thirty seven accomplished competitors lined up to compete for the prize fund. The challenging track designed by Rafael Suarez was closely watched by an enthusiastic arena party with Kerry Saunders keeping everything moving between warm up, pocket and main arena. Hilary McClelland kept everyone informed while her experience and accuracy were appreciated during extremely close competition.

Fifteen competitors jumped clear and into the jump off. First in to compete was Sven Hadley jumping an economical round, however taking a pole. Barry McCormick and Armani Velvet were second in and although they rolled the second fence they finished in a time of 47.46 and seventh place overall. Next in was Chris Megahey and Rickamore Royale, sadly taking the first part of the double however completed a strong attempt by this young rider and highest young rider placing in the competition. Emily Turkington and Legend rode the long way to the double, however the second part fell finishing on a time of 51.08 and into 10th place.

James Hogg and Interpreter set off at pace, fresh from his 1.20m success, jumping the wall and the rider ‘bogey’ stair fence at a determined angle, they were not to be beaten crossing the line clear in the very respectable time of 35.09 seconds. Daniel Coyle sadly had an uncharacteristic refusal on both of his rides. Sven Hadley entered the arena on the second of horse horses Quanbell taking a slightly longer route he planned a safe clear ad delivered in a time of 40.43. Sven’s third and final ride for the class was Cassana who jumped an economical and clear 45.44 slotting into fourth. Conor McEneaney and Moonlight Cavalier were last to go and jumped a very stylish and fast clear to finish clear in a time of 38.66 and in second place.

The 1.10m class was very competitive with Sven Hadley taking first place once again on Utha. Rory Lavery and Drissa were on form taking second in the 1.10m and fifth in the 1.20m classes. Helen Pearson Murray took fourth and sixth in the 1.10m class with I aint no Tinker and I Aint No Lady consecutively, with Rachel Thompson and You Two Clover finishing in fifth.

Carol Armstrong was unbeatable in the 1.20m as she finished clear in the determined way in which she began setting an unbeatable time. Sven Hadley settled for second place, however made up for it in the grand prix later that day.Laura Hutton and Portmore Minstrel finished in third.

The Portmore Grand Prix was a delight for spectators with so many professional combinations taking on the Rafael Suarez course. Many commented with delight on the technical aspect of it and felt a benefit from the course. The weekend of competition ended as it had begun with Sven Hadley at the top of the leader board, taking home first, second and third places on Cassara, Cassintine and Quantel respectively. Local competitor Luke Campbell finished in fourth on his stallion Treba Douglas, while Frank Curran and New World completed in fifth place and Emily Turkington and Allihies Diamond Boy taking sixth.

High winds and icy roads disrupted travel arrangements on Saturday for the final round of Portmore’s unregistered horse and pony league sponsored by EquestrianResults.co.uk meaning that some combinations were unable to make it to the earlier classes, however competitor numbers on the day were high and the timed phase of the competition was a popular addition.

The first prize of the day was for Lucy Tombs and May who were crowned leading junior rider of the league due to the high number of clear rounds they had gathered over the course of the league. Catherine Buchanan and Lightening jumped clear in the 60cm class to claim their red rosette for the class on the day.

The 70cm class was won by Bree Rutledge and her horse Gem who finished double clear and in a very fast time of 29.91 seconds, they could not be touched and won both the class on the day and the league over all. Laura Struthers finished second in the league and also went home with rosettes and prize money. Laura then decided to give the 80cm class a go for the first time and ended up setting the unbeatable time of 29.15, which second placed Lesley Wilson and Lyleview Martell jut couldn’t match.

Bree Rutledge and Gem won the 70cm league overall

The 80cm league was won overall by Lesley Wilson as a qualified rider for that class, with Elaine Grey and Crigou finishing second in the league. Another super competitive time came from Ronan McSorey and Superchoice who galloped home double clear in a time of 33.13 with Natasha Cassidy and BJ on their debut outing claiming fourth place. Tori Showkum and Tally Ho made a welcomed return from their christmas break to attend the final and were in their usual competitive form finishing in 5th.

Lesley Wilson returned to the arena for the 90cm class ready to make sure she could not be beaten and sure enough the clock stopped at 29.48 and double clear to win the red for this class and the league prizemoney too. Lyleview Martell got to show off his new EquestrianResults.co.uk rug for leading senior combination and posed for a few photos before the next class.

Lesley Wilson leading senior rider, finished in second place in the 80cm class won by Laura struthers pictured in front, Tori Showkum pictured right was also placed

Shannon Robinson and Luna finished in second place making their icy and challenging trip to Portmore that morning worthwhile finishing in a competitive time of 29.59 seconds. Third place went to Gareth Nethercote and the lovely grey Shahida Diamond in a speedy time of 29.87, meanwhile Iona McCreery and Blaney enjoyed another double clear in a time of 32.55 seconds to claim fourth position. Tori Showkum and Tally Ho are never far from the top and they finished in fifth place once again, with sixth place going to Laura Cornett and Lord Jack who also jumped competitively the week before.

The hardest working rider of the day had to be Ellie Humphries who tirelessly gave her all to every pony she competed throughout the day totalling six rounds from the 80cm class to 1.10m! The metre class was won by the final rider entering the ring, Luke Campbell and Goldie who jumped clear in a time of 31.39 stealing the top spot from Laura Keery and Cleo who had held the lead with 31.60 seconds. Gareth Nethercote and Shahida Diamond were third once again, while Ruth Wilson and Maisie finished fourth in the class, however as a qualified rider, they won the league overall. Katy Connor and Katy finished in 5th place in the 1m class and went home with a white competition saddlecloth sponsored by EquestrianResults.co.uk. Sarah Burns and Star jumped to sixth place on star and seventh on her other horse in that class Wonder.

The 1.10m class was won by Brogan McCrum on Finn, with Steven Smith and Drummer finishing in second.

Ruth Wilson winning the 1m league on Home Alone City

The Smith Bros Eventing Team competed quite a number of horses in these classes in preparation for the season ahead and they certainly jumped well with Steven Smith and Katy McKenzie in particular being kept very busy. Professional as always, they moved horses between classes to allow for the smooth running of the competition ensuring that other competitors weren’t kept waiting which was hugely appreciated by everyone. The 1.20m class was won by Roman Ptacek on Joli owned by James Acheson, with Steven Smith and Bonito jumping double clear to finish second. Gareth Nethercote and My Diamond Douglas finished in third.

Saturday unregistered horse and pony show jumping will take a break for a week and resume at Portmore on Saturday 15th February. Huge thanks to EquestrianResults.co.uk for sponsoring saddlecloths each week for competitor prize draws, and prizes at the final. Clear round results for all those who added their horses to the website can be found on www.equestrianresults.co.uk with members logging in to their own personalised accounts by using their email address and the password they chose when filling in their forms.

Tuesday night training shows continue this Tuesday, with Friday night pony shows every Friday, all evening competitions begin at 7pm. Keep an eye on the Portmore Facebook page for updates, or our website www.portmoreequestriancentre.com Thank you to all competitors who made the league such a great success.

Competitors were out in force once again for the fourth round of the Equestrian Results.co.uk sponsored league at Portmore. The

The first competition of 2014 was well attended at Portmore Equestrian Centre, the blustery conditions outside encouraged competitors to make the most of the superb arenas and indoor spectator viewing gallery available all year around. The course was designed by Mickey McCann who built it with young horses in mind offering an encouraging and flowing theme for all competitors. It was enjoyable to see a number of young horses making their debut onto the competition scene in this relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Equestrian Results were on hand to add any new competitors to the website and document their results, meanwhile Lorraine kindly agreed to judge for the day working efficiently to ensure the smooth running of the competition.

Ellie Rose Cassidy jumping clear in the 90cm on Chesty

Emma Lee Turley and her super pony Bon Ame set the scene in the 80cm class with a very well ridden double clear.

Knockagh View competitors were out in force once again with a lorry full of well turned out horses and ponies. Ruth Wilsons stylish double clear in the 90cm class on her grey mare Maisie finished their day on a high note.

The second round of Portmore’s unregistered horse and pony league sponsored by Equestrian Results.co.uk enjoyed a good turnout. The course was designed to encourage younger horses to settle into a rhythm, in a welcoming environment. As a number of new faces were welcomed, and promising new horses were introduced to the venue it was a rewarding day to enjoy.

Frances Gribben performed her hat trick of three double clears in the 60, 70 and 80cm classes putting her at the top of the senior leagerboard. This performance has been matched only by Frances on two previous occasions at Equestrian Results competitions. Her jumping performance record on the website is looking very good indeed!

Horseweek’s Bree Rutledge jumped flawlessly clear on her horse Gem once again, putting her into joint second place for leading senior horse and rider combination for the league. Jenny Beggs and Maggie May also achieved their second clear round of the league, as they produced a flawless clear in the 70cm class. Leah Knoght on Boris, Lesley Wilson on Lyleview Mortell and Nicola Eames on Maisie join them on two points each.

Placed riders in the 80cm class, Frances Gribben on Twinks, Mandi King on Polo, Leah Knight on Jewel and Jenny Beggs on Maggie May

A saddlecloth is drawn during each week of the league with all competitors names going in to the draw. This week it was won by Zoe Bell and her lovely grey horse Pablo.

EquestrianResults.co.uk is an online results service designed to offer an online record of your horses’ achievements in show jumping, dressage and showing. Equestrian Results attend a number of shows, however you do not need to be a member on the website to attend any of these shows, it is simply an extra service for those who may enjoy the benefits.

The unregistered Portmore league is sponsored by Equestrian Results.co.uk who randomly choose a competitor each week to win a branded saddlecloth. The final of Portmore’s league will see Rugs presented for leading senior and leading junior riders, while qualified competitors who have attended four shows and the final will also be jumping for prize money which is accumulating each week with £2 from every entry fee going in to the prize fund.

There will be no unregistered competition next Saturday due to a training booking; therefore the league’s next date will be held on Sat 4th Jan with competitions each saturday throughout January. Portmore’s Christmas Show will be held on Saturday 14th December with a schedule of novelty events to include pairs jumping, king and queen of the ring, six bar competition and puissance wall on www.portmoreequestriancentre.com

Demand grew during the league as riders chose to include their details on this innovative new website allowing their results to be visible online, encouraging them to compete at more than their required attendance for the league final.

While the final of the league was a very busy show, organisers hope that this next league will be even more popular due to the prizes on offer!

Each week a lucky winner will be chosen to go home with a prize from the show at each qualifying date, so there are more prizes for a greater number of competitors throughout the league.

A rug for leading senior rider and leading junior rider will be awarded at the final, with prize money on offer on the final date as well.

£2 from every entry will go into the prize winning total to be divided amongst qualified riders as they compete for the biggest share in each class at the final in January. (To qualify, riders must attend four dates and the qualifier.)
The league will begin this Saturday 9th November, continuing on 30th November, 7th December, 4th Jan, 11th Jan, 18th Jan, and final on 25th January.
