On Bank holiday Monday 31st August all roads will lead to the Meadows Equestrian Centre for the charity showjumping show which is run annually to raise money for Beth, a local teenager who suffers from Friedrich’s Ataxia. This is a progressive, debilitating neurological condition which affects the ability to walk and carry out general activities of daily living.

Last year the show was a great success. Not long after it Beth underwent major spinal surgery which has had a lengthy recovery process. She spent most of last year’s money on physiotherapy to improve her strength and posture. This along with her determination meant that she was able to return to school a lot more quickly than her medical team had anticipated. Beth has very recently undergone further surgery and will require a lot more treatment to help her make the most from the operations. She aims to start studying for her GCSEs in September and those who know how determined she is are in no doubt that she will achieve this goal!

The show on Bank Holiday Monday aims to raise as much money as possible to make life just that little bit easier for Beth and her family.

There will be two arenas in operation throughout the day, starting at 9am. Ring One will run classes from 80cm up to 1.30 and there will be several speed and also power and speed classes to keep everyone on their toes. Ring two will cater for the less experienced combinations and classes will be from cross poles right up to 80cm. Both arenas are open to horses and ponies and the full schedule will be posted on the Meadows Equestrian Centre website.

As always there will be fantastic prizes up for grabs with confirmed sponsors to date including Clandeboye Lodge Hotel, Pegus Horse Feeds, Dubarry Ireland, Honeyhill Rossettes, equinephotograpers.com, Doagh Farm Feeds, Stonebridge Feeds, The Catch Ballynure, Baileys Feeds and Trotup.com along with several private donors. Anyone who enters two classes on the same horse or pony will be entered into the prize draw for the fabulous prize of a meal for two people at the renowned Clandeboye Lodge.

Beth’s family will again be providing teas, coffee, hot chocolate and fabulous home baking which is always well worth sampling!

For any further information please don’t hesitate to contact Anita on 07872026130

The Annual St Patrick’s Schools’ Jumping at The Meadows was another huge success with very large entries across the board meaning that jumping continued unabated from 9am till dusk. Although rain threatened at times, competitors were blessed with a glorious day and the standard of jumping was impressively high. There was even representation from Newbridge, Co Kildare.

Arena 1 started on the stroke of 9am with the Novice Teams. Cullybackey who were joining these ‘Meadows’ Schools competitions for the first time were third to go and set a very high standard by posting four double clears in super quick time. Seven other teams managed the zero score but none were able to match the Co Antrim team who headed home with the specially designed shamrock rosettes and the top placed vouchers from the sponsor, Equestrian Store of Portadown.

The Tack and Turn Out Competitions were judged by Noeleen Jones who had no doubt about the winning Novice team, awarding the prize to Down High Gold who were impressively clean, neat and tidy.

The Novice Individual competitions are notoriously competitive and St Patrick’s Day was no exception. There were breath-takings rounds completed in very fast times but the centre place on the podium was reserved for one of the youngest competitors – Victoria Boville and Pippa who are no strangers to success in speed competitions. She had a 4.5 second lead from runner-up Regan McKee and Rosscor Silver Lady, a combination possessing a fair few winning rosettes.

The Open Team competition saw Ballyclare High School featuring very prominently. Their Brann team won by a three second margin over Ballymena Academy while the Dixon team not only came 6th but also won the tack and turn out as well.

Individually, Pen Peppert from Ballymena Academy won the show and was undoubtedly the ‘Man of the Match’ overall with a number of top placings. Holly Boal put up a great performance to finish in second spot while another young rider, Trudie McCoosh also posted a number of top placings.

This year, the Meadows Equestrian Centre introduced a 1.10m class which is part of the Southern run Schools’ competition and top marks went again to Ben Peppert with Duchess while Rachel Kennedy ‘stormed’ into 2nd place with Lishmar Stormy Boy.

As ever, the Primary Schools created great excitement and their standards are very high indeed. Many of the teams competing are regulars from the Winter League and month on month the fortunes change. This time round it was Paddy’s Lucky Day for The Rascals who finished ahead of the Tack & Turn Out winners, The Funky Fillies.

Katie McCombe made it a day to remember by having two ponies on the winning team, and then went one step further to claim the individual prize from Laura Brown and Tina.

The Meadows Equestrian Centre is deeply indebted to the Equestrian Store, Portadown, for their very generous sponsorship of all classes at the St Patrick’s Day Show and it was super to have Gareth McCombe, representing the Store, available for the prizegivings.

Thanks, too, to all Officials who helped in any way to make this Annual Event a very memorable one for so many of the school children.

Double clears in the showjumping were difficult to find but riders were very content with the opportunity of doing some very valuable schooling prior to the start of the Eventing and ShowJumping seasons.

The dressage attracted another good entry and the standard was very encouraging in all classes. However, the competitor who stood out was Anna Kelly who took a first and third in dressage and delivered two super double clears in the showjumping which augurs very well for the Eventing year ahead.
Alex Gordon also made a very welcome return to the arena and claimed the red dressage rosette in the Novice class on board Sox before hot-footing it off for a hockey match!
Fiona Fitzbibbon and Charlie Finn had a run-away victory in Intro dressage, finishing three points clear of Malachy Casement and his very promising Maestoso.
Next week sees the finish of the current series of Flexi Eventing. Dressage entries should be with Dora by 6pm on Wednesday.

It was certainly a case of all roads leading to The Meadows on Saturday where the Lurgan Equestrian Centre was a hive of eventing activity.
With almost 100 dressage entries, the judges, Vanda Robinson, Lynsey Craig and Fiona Morrow were kept occupied until after 3pm. Meantime the showjumping got underway ahead of schedule and continued unabated until 3.30pm with the cross country running simultaneously. Once again riders were fulsome in their praise for the educational opportunities afforded by the Flexi Eventing which is open to everyone. Due to popular demand it is being extended until Saturday 23 February with dressage entries requiring to be made with Dora (07876758979 or dorabeacom@live.co.uk) by 6pm on the Wednesday of each week. Showjumping and cross country can be entered on the day.
The Meadows Equestrian Centre and Eventing Ireland(NR) are deeply indebted to all helpers: Secretary, course designer, judges, scribes, scorers, starters and arena party – your contribution to a very successful day is very much appreciated.
Photographs of the Flexi Eventing can be viewed on www.lawrencemckenzie.com.

Once again, The Meadows Equestrian Centre was a hive of activity for the second leg of the Flexi Eventing series. Despite the overnight frost, all arenas were in great shape and all disciplines got underway at the scheduled time. This is proving to be a very popular initiative as it affords competitors freedom of choice and many availed of the discounted rate of £25 for all three disciplines. The water complex is an added bonus and caused plenty of problems on the cross country course where clear rounds were scarce. There were competitors from all corners of the North who felt their trip was very worthwhile with plenty of education to be had all round!

This series of flexi eventing is open to everyone, not just Eventers and, due to popular demand, is being extended for a further two weeks ( up to 23 February)

Dressage tests for this coming Saturday (2nd Feb) are: Pre Novice BE102 (2010), Novice BE112 (2010) and Intermediate BE115 (2011). Entries should be texted (07876758979) or emailed to dorabeacom@live.co.uk by Wednesday.
