A mammoth total in excess of 400 entries took to the arenas at the Meadows Equestrian Centre, Lurgan, to start of the events for August.

Divided over 3 arenas competitors had lots to choose from, Show Jumping, Dressage and the inaugural Northern Ireland Foal Championship supported by the Northern Ireland Horse Board.

Showjumping

It was a busy day in the Show Jumping arenas with both Show Jumping Ireland and Cash Jumping Arenas reporting a surge in entries. In the SJI arena, it was a good day for Rory Lavery winning the 1.10m on board George Stewart’s Mr Mee, the same combination where beaten to the 1.20m win also by Seamus McSorley riding his fathers’ Quarrycrest Clover.

The Cash Jumping Ireland arena also seen an increase in entries with over 40 riders taking to Arena 2 in one of the classes. The big money however was won by Colleen Glasgow and Lakeview Concun Diamond in the 1.10m taking home £35 in the process.

Riders should note there will be no Show Jumping at the Meadows for 2 weekends due to Dublin Show and the International Dressage event. Show Jumping will recommence with the MEC Championships taking place from 20th-23rd August.

In the absence of a National Horse Championships it is hoped that this event will give riders the opportunity to ride at one of Ireland’s premier facilities as well as hosting TRM/ Horse Ware Premier Grand Prix final, ISH Studbook finals, Amateur Leddy League Qualifier and the TRM National Grand Prix Series.

Bookings are now being taken for stabling at the Championships and can be booked by contacting the MEC on 028 38322 417 or by their website www.themec.co.uk.

NORTHERN IRELAND FOAL SHOW

In its inaugural year the Championships were devised with the aim to “identify, evaluate and reward breeders who have bred a foal that has the potential to be competitive at the highest international level”.

At the Northern leg of the National Qualifiers which also was the NI Championships, 25 foals took centre stage to compete in the Eventing and Show Jumping sections. Nigel Peters’ OBOS Quality 004 filly took the Eventing filly category, bred from an Aldatuus Z dam, judges Janet Murray and Kieran Ryan were very impressed, result in the 1st place rosette and qualification to compete at the National finals later this month.

The winning eventing colt also gaining qualification by bred by Debbie McClean from her Acclaimation dam, Cocktail party; the colt sired by Belgian Warmblood, Ramiro B.

In the Show jumping section judges Tom Slattery and John Hughes cast a watchful eye over the section and decided that Carol Armstrong’s filly by KWPN Stallion ‘Plot and Lawrence Patterson’s Tolan R Colt were worthy winners of their respective sections also.

The eagerly awaited Final of the Meadows Equestrian Centre’s Inter -Schools Show Jumping League took place on Saturday on a rather cool but glorious spring day. The pressure of the final certainly took its toll with some of the most consistent combinations failing to secure the all important double clears.

This was most evident in the Novice Team Event where Royal School Armagh, winners of the previous four legs, finished in 11th place on the day which created great anticipation as to how the final league placings would pan out. On the day, victory went to a delighted duo of Charlotte Harding and Ellie Humphries from Cambridge House Grammar who have been consistently in the top placings every month. They were less than a second faster than the very accomplished team from Belfast Royal Academy followed by Lurgan Junior High.

This year, the success of the MEC League has led to an invitation for the winning teams to travel to the All Ireland Inter-Schools Show Jumping Final in Coilog in April. When the calculations for the Novice Team League placings were completed, it revealed a draw for first place between Royal School Armagh and Cambridge House but, in line with procedure, the accolade went to Cambridge House as the team with the higher placing at the Final. Cambridge House went on to score a treble by winning the Tack & Turn Out Award as well.

Individually, it was a fast and furious competition with Royal School Armagh’s Maeve McCall picking up top spot with her very reliable Snowy. The combination also gained second place overall in the League which was won by Hannah Rafferty and Robe Dream.

The Open Team competition provided very few surprises and saw victory on the day, as well as overall in the League, go to a very strong team from Royal School Armagh who actually only dropped one point throughout the five legs. BRA, who were snapping at the winner’s heels since September, finished second overall as well as claiming the ‘Best Turned Out’ Award.

Undoubtedly, the most excited competitor of the day was 12 year old Victoria Boville from Dromore High School who brushed off the competition in the Open Individual class with her fantastic little pony, Pippa, completing two seconds ahead of Rachel Chapman and Duffy. This is all the more remarkable, given that Victoria was still competing as a Primary School pupil last year. She went one step further by winning the League outright and receiving a beautiful new bridle and headcollar from the sponsor, Jo Chesney of Cherry Soda Ladies Fashion.

Meantime, action in the Primary section got underway in Arena 2 with a very excited group of 11 year olds and under. They have provided plenty of excitement and entertainment over the past five months and this month was no exception. Most of the teams have been very equally balanced with each of them having had one ‘off day’ in the course of the League which left everything to play for on Saturday. Again, there were elements of mixed fortunes but, in the end, Moira Mavericks picked up their 3rd victory which was good enough to secure them League Winners too.

In the individual section, it was a runaway victory for Kerry Magill who didn’t need ‘Another Chance’ to scoop the League Champion title. Tack and Turn Out was won, again, by The Tiny Terrors who certainly have put great effort all season into their presentation. Thanks goes to Ros Murphy for the unenviable task of judging this aspect of all three competitions but whose critical eye certainly missed none of the detail.

The Meadows Equestrian Centre would like to thank the Sponsors, Vicky of Horse World NI, Jo Chesney of Cherry Soda Ladies Clothing and Judy Maxwell of Baileys Horse Feeds whose generosity and support of the League is very much appreciated. Thanks, too, to all the Judges, Starters and Arena Parties in both locations as well as all the schools, together with their chefs d’equipe, who supported the League.

The next Schools’ competition at The Meadows Equestrian Centre takes place on Monday 17th March with a ‘Saint Patrick’s Schools’ Special’. There are classes for Primary (70cms), Novice (85cms) and Open (1m) for both team and individual as well as a ‘Premier’ Individual class at 1.10m.

There will be prizes for best fancy dress for both team and individual and full details are available on the MEC website.

Saturday’s wet and blustery conditions did nothing to dampen the competitive spirit at The Meadows Equestrian Centre where teams gathered as the first glimpses of day light were evident for the penultimate leg of the very popular Inter-Schools’ Show Jumping league.
The stamina of the riders, parents and chefs d’equipe is worthy of gold medals and, as always, action began even before the scheduled 9am start.
This week Arena 2 began with the Primary Schools section where there was a little disruption to the trend of the past few months with the two Moira teams slipping down the leader board a little in favour of The Rascals who won on this occasion with a clean slate from all four combinations. The Funky Fillies from Fairview and Kildarg did likewise in a slightly slower time to fill in second place but they went one step better by winning the tack and turn out which, this month, was judged by Eventing Ireland’s Northern Region Chair, Catherine Abbott, who braved the elements to cast her critical eye over every competitor.
The individual winner was Kerry Magill and Another Chance, who zoomed around Aaron McCusker’s testing track over a second faster than second placed Laura McKay on Darcy.
The Novice Team competition had its usual high number of starters and, thanks to the valiant efforts of Cathy Young, the class completed ahead of schedule.
Royal School Armagh, who have been fielding strong teams this season, had yet another victory, finishing five seconds clear of Our Lady’s Grammar School who also caught the eye of Catherine Abbott and were awarded top marks for turn out. Credit was also given to the team from Regent House who very deservedly won the most festively dressed award.
Action was very fast and very furious in the Individual class where the red rosette eventually went to Trudie McCosh and Princess who took all possible turns in a very professional manner which proved impossible to beat. Coming closest was Lucy Savage and the very aptly named, Young Ryan’s Son.
The afternoon saw the start of the Open Team Event where no teams finished on a zero. However, fastest of the four faulters was Royal School Armagh who had a two second lead over BRA’s Pottinger Team.
Individual honours went to Regent House with Regan McKee winning the class on Rosscor Freedom and fellow pupil, Amy McKeown picking up the blue rosette on Silver.
Tack and Turn Out winners were a very dapper team from Friends School Lisburn.
Sincere thanks goes to all the judges, Catherine Abbott as tack inspector, starters, course designer and arena parties as well as all the competitors and their supporters whose enthusiasm and infectious enjoyment of this League make it worthwhile. Sincere thanks also goes to our sponsors, Horseworld Northern Ireland for their generosity and support.
The final leg takes place on Saturday 14 January.

The Moira Mavericks Primary School team continued their good run at The Meadows Equestrian Centre with another victory under their belt which currently leaves them 7 points clear at the top of the League table. They were one of 5 teams to finish on a zero score after superb jumping from all competitors. The individual competition was equally competitive and extremely fast and furious as, one after another, these young riders demonstrated a degree of professionalism which belied their tender ages. In the end, and with the last glimmer of light fading, Cerys Howell was awarded a 1-2 with Kerry Magill picking up 3rd place. Thanks to Judy Maxwell of Baileys Horse Feeds, there were a number of spot prizes awarded to unsuspecting candidates which included the team from’Overs & Unders’ as well as Megan Carson and Rocco.

There seems to be no catching the Novice team from Royal School Armagh who made it three victories in a row, giving them maximum points over half way through the league. However, BRA and Wallace High Flyers were hot on their heels with a small time differential separating the top three teams. The Novice Individual competition seems to be getting tighter every month. Winner last time, Hannah Rafferty had to settle for 2nd place this month, having been overtaken by a very fast Maeve McCall on Snowy from the Royal School Armagh’s winning team.

The Novice tack and turn out prize was awarded to Ballyclare Secondary School for the second successive month and, when they are positioned in the line up, it is easy to see why they ticked all the boxes – well done to their chef d’equipe, Joyce McConnell.

Royal School Armagh, who has certainly fielded an impressive line up of competitors, shone through this month in the Open Team Event to claim top prize ahead of BRA’s Potinger team with Saintfield High picking up 3rd prize. Individual honours went to Gemma Chambers on Honey while Ciara Muirhead on Phoenix Firefly slotted in behind in 2nd place.

The girls from Regent House who looked very smart in their red school colours won the tack and turn out prize. Many thanks to the Tack and Turn Out Judges, Shellagh and Maeve Gault, whose meticulousness was very impressive and those teams who won these awards were truly deserving of the accolades.

The Meadows Equestrian Centre would like to thank the Sponsors, Vicky of Horse World NI, Cherry Soda Clothing and Judy Maxwell of Baileys Horse Feeds as well as the Judges, Starters and Arena Parties in both locations.

The next leg of the League takes place on Saturday 14 December with full details on the MEC website.

Although the sun may not have been shining, the weather held up for a great day at The Meadows Equestrian Centre on 5th May all in aid of the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children.

With both arenas running covering horses and ponies there was something for everyone including a bun sale and face painting by Shooting Stars. The flowing courses built by Aaron McCusker, relaxed atmosphere and expert judging from Hilary McClelland, Margie Lowry, David Greene and Jill Martin meant it was the perfect day out especially for those making their first debut in the cross pole class.

Emma Berry riding Betty Boo receives a helping hand from sister Sian and friend Hannah Agnew in the x pole class

Zoolander Photography were also on hand to document the day in photos and all can be viewed on www.zoolanderphotography.com
It was great to see the amount of young riders in the pony arena who turned out first thing to jump their round. Even when it didn’t go quite according to plan the sweets on exit usually made the round worthwhile! As the classes progressed the riders too upped their game especially when the clock became a deciding factor in the placings. Both the 90cms and 1m classes proved to be extremely fast with riders pulling out all the stops in an attempt to get their hands on some fantastic prizes.

Kerry Magill and Flapjack Flyer en route to a lovely double clear in the 90cms class

Melissa McKee riding Prince took first place in the 90cms picking up the beautiful rug sponsored by Equestrian World Maynooth just ahead of Ronan McSorley on Pedro who had to be content with second place on this occasion. Not to be out done Ronan took up the reins again on Pedro for the 1m class and this time finished in first place receiving voucher for a private lesson with Level 3 HSI Coach Gary Marshall. Lucy Sullivan on Bord of Barvin finished just behind in second. Having only 2 entries in the 1m10 pony Ellie Hughes and Lucy Sullivan split the spoils for their jumping efforts.

The horse arena was proved just as competitive! In the 90cms class Gary Leathem on Troy proved just too fast to be caught and took home first place 4 seconds ahead of Joanna Curran who had a fantastic day out with numerous placings and prizes throughout the horse classes. The 2 fence challenge followed the 90cms and was definitely the class of the day for spectators as the side of the arena was filled with people. 14 riders took up the challenge of the ever growing vertical and oxer but only 2 made it over the final height clear. Margaret Fullerton riding Vinday and Michael Parker on Micko split the prize fund of £300 generously sponsored by Nicola McCormick of Pet Haven and Colin McCormick of Surefoot

Farriers who had a quick break from his job as starter in the pony arena in order to present the prizes. In the 1m class Stephanie Rankin on Tease Me Tiger finished in first place and was delighted to be taking home the Hospitality Package for Down Royal Racecourse. Joanna Curran this time riding Minnie finished in second place. Henderson Group and Spar sponsored the star prize in the 1m10 and with an iPad Mini up for grabs all bets were off. In the end Karen Pearson took the honours on the ever consistent Quantum Classic, 0.19 seconds ahead of Ruth Will and Javas Imp.

A massive thank you to all the generous sponsors, to all those who helped on the day and to everyone who turned up and supported the show. A fantastic £3,300 was raised to add to Adam Kerr’s fundraising efforts which now stand at £19,678!!!

Competitors at The Meadows Equestrian Centre enjoyed another great day of Flexi Eventing on Saturday when activity was continuous from 9am until almost 4pm.

The star of the dressage was, undoubtedly, Suzi Berry who had placings in all three classes. She claimed the red rosette in the Pre Novice class on Lola, having been separated from second placed Tori Dixon merely by the collective marks.

Vicky Clegg took the honours in the Novice section with her ever reliable, Villa Imp, finishing three percent clear of Barbara Dixon on Shadow. Meantime, top of the leaderboard in the Intermediate class was a delighted Beth Young on her faithful companion, Willie Wee with Suzi Berry half a percent behind on Bolero.

The showjumping arena was a hive of activity with almost 50 entries in the 1m class alone while the water again provided a great schooling opportunity on the cross country run.

Next week, 23 February, sees the final leg in the current series of Flexi Eventing which has been extremely popular. Dressage entries should be made with Dora (07876758979 or dorabeacom@live.co.uk) by 6pm on Wednesday. Showjumping and cross country can be entered on the day. Enquiries to Patricia on 07843590193.

The Meadows Equestrian Centre and Eventing Ireland(NR) are deeply indebted to all helpers: Secretary, course designer, judges, scribes, scorers, starters and arena party – your contribution to a very successful day is very much appreciated.

The McCusker family had taken all necessary precautions to ensure that both arenas were in perfect condition although, in the event, there wasn’t even a hint of snow.

Ivor Harper judged the dressage in Arena 1 with Stephen Hewitt acting as his scribe. Meantime, Arena 2 hosted the showjumping where the day started with superb courses built by Aaron McCusker at 70cms and 1m. Competitors were alternated between both heights. The 70cms was later raised to 80cms and then 90cms while the 1m track progressed to 1.10m and 1.20m.

The cross country course was running all day with the water jump being a particular favourite amongst those availing of this schooling opportunity.

This series of Flexi Eventing continues for the next 3 weeks and is open to everyone – dressage must be pre-entered with Dora (07876758979 or dorabeacom@live.co.uk) by the Wednesday of each week with showjumping and cross country being entered on the day.
