Walk, trot and canter into the Laurel View Winter Dressage League

A beautiful autumnal day welcomed the dressage competitors to Laurel View on the 4th October for the start of the Winter League.

As ever healthy competitive spirit was present in abundance and the walk trot class judged by Emma Hobson was no exception to this. Dan and Daline Hamilton topped her class with Archie and Samantha Hamilton only a point or two behind.

Ivor Harper watched riders step out Prelim 1 and his judging deemed Simon Wylie and Schumi to be number 1 on the day, with Alison Matthews and Tadhg getting the blue rosette here.

Ivor was also tasked with assessing the competitors in class 3, putting their best foot forward in the Prelim 4 test. A red ribbon went home with a very pleased Diane Jones and JJ, while Sophie Winn and Wizard of Oz were delighted to receive the blue one in such a strong class.

David Patterson was the man with the coldest seat while he was in the hot spot as judge for the classes outdoors! Daryl McKinney and Ballylin Ben scored highest riding Prelim 13 while Tara Murphy and Tick It took the second place position.

Daline Hamilton on Dan win the walk trot class – Photo by Equi-Tog

In the Novice class David’s judging placed Ballylin Ben and Darryl McKinney first again, with Beechmount Baxter and Linda McIlwaine runner up this time round.

Last class of the day for David was the Open class and here the red ribbon was earned by Penny Murphy and Tick It for their Elementary test. Furisto Seven for a Secret and Jill Hobson also riding the Elementary test took home the runners up ribbon.

A splendid day of dressage captured by the Equi-Tog photographer and Laurel View look forward to more of the same at the second leg of the Winter Dressage League on Sunday 15th November.

Seems no time since spring and the last Laurel View Pounds for Points League, but here we are with the second night of the winter show jumping league well underway. Time flies when you are having fun!

Speed isn’t necessarily the best option at the Pounds for Points league as it is more important to get as many double clears throughout the league as possible to earn points to convert to pounds at the climax on 23rd December.

So come along and give the Laurel View show jumping a go on Wednesday evenings, things get going at 6pm with the 45cms, before moving on up from 60cm through to a metre.

If you can’t make it on the night, or your horse is a little too green for jumping in front of an audience, why not book in for schooling the morning after? Book through the office on 028 9083 0649.

Perhaps the 13th of September was too early to have the Laurel View End of Summer Show, especially as we hadn’t had much of a summer, but none the less competitors came from all over the province to take, making all the preparation and work worthwhile. Even better still the sun came out to play and stayed for most of the day. Loads of shiny trophies and frilly rosettes were presented to the many worthy winners.

Working Hunter red ribbons were awarded by judge Violet Jackson to Judith Templeton and Winnie; Amy Nevins and Diamond; Rachael Ferguson and Jack Daniels; Lauren Hill and Lemon; Sarah Sproule and Maya with Simon Wylie and Schumi claiming the last working hunter win of the day.

Meanwhile in the Show Jumping arena Geraldine Lowry had been officiating, with the top spots scored by Abbi Gill and Dusk; Samantha Billing and Thor; Rebecca Gillen and Martini; Samantha Billing and Sammy; Kerry Gilmore and Shannon; Shauna McVeigh and Apache Dove plus Edana Butler and Bella.

Lemon and Lauren Hill ride into first over the 65cm fences – Photo by Equi-Tog

Proprietor Robert Davis had put together the obstacle course. He found Grace-Ann Elliott and Magerbans Star Gazer; Cora McNulty and Pippa; Lexy Dawson and Alfie Moon, as well as Grace Murray and Holiday Candlelight to be more than up to his challenge.

Amy Neill and Kirsty Marsden were tasked with judging the showing classes between them. First up were the coloured classes with the first place rosettes going to Katie Scott on Slemish Young Glory and Vicky Marsden on Lily. The Young Warrior Coloured Championship was awarded fittingly to Slemish Young Glory, the progeny of Young Warrior.

First place rosettes also went home with Darryl McKinney and Ballylinn Ben; Jennifer Christie and Winnie; Amy Tubman and Jananda My Valentine; Charlotte McAllister and Timmy and last but by no means least to Sam Jackson and Jack.

At Laurel View on Sunday the 6th September, Grace was the name that was coming up trumps over the 45cm jumping track. With Grace Morton and Rocky taking 1st place for their clear round which was faster than Grace Hancock and William. Gracie Bright and Charlie picked up 4 faults leaving her in third place.

Over the 50cm Grace Morton and Rocky kept up their sterling performance, taking the red ribbon again. Toby Davison and Jake came a very close second, with their clear round just a shade slower.

Grace Morton and Rocky proudly showing off their red ribbon – Photo by Equi-Tog

Emma Irwin and Daisy were the top of a very strong 60cm class, thanks to a lovely clear round of jumping. Monica Conlon and Tally managed a clear 1st phase, securing her the second place spot.

Over the seventies the top rider was Coral Logue on Cassie after riding a cracking clear round. Millie and Katy Clarke kept clear off the fences too, but weren’t quite as nippy, so the blue ribbon was there.

Up to the eighties and another red ribbon for Coral Logue and Cassie, second to Coral over this course was Miriam Wright and The Castletown Lad.

The afternoon finished up with the jumps at 90cm, these were cleared easily by Michaela Murphy and Jamara to take home the red rosette and a couple of pounds cashback. Second place went to Katie McDonnell and Annaghs Prince.

The longest day of the year whizzed by at the Laurel View Dressage competition, the second competition in the Summer league. Not that the weather felt particularly “summery!”

Walk/trot competitors benefited from Lucy Webbs appraising judgement for their BD Intro A tests. Gerri Harron Andrews took the first place spot on Rock Steady Teddy. Simon Wylie and Schumi rode a super test to claim second.

Debbie Osborough proved a very encouraging Newcomers judge. The best Prelim 4 test was ridden by Olivia Courtney on Rossi, with the second place rosette going to Holly Reilly and Just Jake.

Casper and Sarah Sproule capture the Class 3 prize – Photo by Equi-Tog

Sarah Sproule and Casper stepped their way to the top of the Prelim 12 class judged by Martina McKinley. Rock Black and Blue ridden by Barbara Hannah took home the blue rosette.

Class 4 judged by Will McAuley was won by Oakhill Charm and Jennifer McCann, while Sarah Sproule and River Diamond Rebel just missed out on the red rosette.

Linda McIlwaine and Beechmount Baxter were Will McAuleys Class 5, Novice 28 winners, with Elaine Williams and Emerald earning the runners up spot.

Lucy Webb judged a wide variety of classes on the day from walk/trot to medium. It was Lynne Robinson and Alfies Elementary test that was awarded the top score in the Open, with Beechmount Baxter and Linda McIlwaine taking home the blue ribbon for their novice test.

Braving the widely varying elements to capture as many of the competitors as possible was the Equi-tog photographer, as ever photos taken can be viewed by emailing info@equi-tog.com

Sunday 31st May was a day that everyone was glad we had opted for the indoor option for the “Just Jumping!” Competition, as we seemed to have 4 seasons in one day, with rather too much of the winter seasons!

The competition was just what it says on the tin – “Just Jumping!” The course building and arena team had put together a great course to test the competitors’ agility. Those that rode a double clear earned themselves two pounds cashback. And in those classes were entries exceeded seven, the winner went free!

Mollie Park and “Lilly” show off their first for the 60cm – Photo by Equi-Tog

Laurel View Roly and Ellie Templeton earned themselves the red ribbon over the 45cm course. Alexandra Murphy and Paddy were top of the class over the 50’s. While in the 60cm Mollie Park and Lilly took home a red rosette for their first show jumping competition.

Christine Murray and Holiday Candlelight were delighted to take the top spot in the 70cm class. Top honours in the eighties and nineties were earned by Bing and Lauren Park.

It has become the Laurel View custom to turn over a show to charity each year, in 2015, the charity to benefit on 24th May was Childreach International. Laurel View chose to support the work of this charity as Laurel View team member Katie Watt is participating a project with them later this summer.

Penny Murphy and Tick – It take first place in the Novice class – Photo by Equi-Tog

Aside from the charity, prize winning competitors benefitted considerably from the prizes supplied by the shows sponsors.

Natasha Lowry and Laurel View Jonathan were astounded to hear they had won the walk/trot class judged by Amy Neill, just a collection point or so ahead of Truly and Jackie Hanna.

Just Jake and Holly Reilly were pleased as punch to come top of the newcomers class. Second to them as judged by Laurel Faloona was Debbie McAlister and Inch by Inch.

A win for William and Shelley McFarlane in Prelim 7 – Photo by Equi-Tog

Ivor Harper judged Prelim 7 and found William and Shelley McFarlane to be top of the large class, just ahead of Claire Robinson and Magic.

Emma Andrews placed Limelight Lexington and Lynsey Craig in the limelight for Class 4. In this class the blue ribbon went to Brad and Joanne McSeveney.

Newcomers first place for Holly Reilly and Just Jake – Photo by Equi-Tog

Emma also judged Novice 24 and awarded first place to Penny Murphy on Tick-It, with the blue ribbon this time for Lynsey Craig and Limelight Lexington.

The Open Class gave judge Joan Adrain plenty of variety to assess, but when the scores were totted up first went to Kilminchy Condor and Lucca Stubington for their Novice test, with Penny Murphy and Tick-Its earning a high scoring second.

Last judging task of the day was also left to Joan Adrain, the Dressage to Music class which had also attracted a good number of entries. A very supportive crowd looked on while the class took place and seemed to concur with the judges conclusions when Margie Mac and Erin Faloona were named winners and Kirsty Marsden and Loughmourne Diamond the very worthy runners up.

As always the Equi-Tog photographer was kept very busy trying to capture competitors at their best, to see if they got your best angle email them at info@equi-tog.com

Thanks to all the competitors for coming along and making the work of the Laurel View team worthwhile. Gratitude also has been expressed to all the judges and scribes for giving their time so generously.

Show organiser Katie Watt and more importantly the prize winners would like to say a massive thank you to sponsors Bluegrass, Botanica, Equi-Tog, NAF and Old Mill for their generous support and fabulous prizes making winning the competition much more worthwhile.

No special prizes at the next leg in the Summer Dressage League, but hopefully it will be equally well supported on Sunday 21st June. Full schedule and entry details are available at www.laurelview.co.uk or just call the office on 028 9083 0649.

Throughout the eight week league the points had been adding up for those riding clear rounds and all those who ended up with league rosettes at the final had their points converted to pounds. Top cash winners were Toby Davison and Jake in the 45cm, while in the 60cm the top winnings went to Shannon Duffy on Connie. Natasha McKernon and Star Statiz came top of the table in both the 70 and 80cms, so she definitely went home a little richer, well rewarded for regular and consistent performance.

Over the coming months, Laurel View will be having their usual Summer break from weekly jumping to make way for teacher training, flatwork and show jumping clinics plus a riding and road safety course, before getting back to Wednesday night jumping on 7th October. In the meantime jumping fans can hopefully make it along to the Just Jumping! Competitions and the Derby Day. To check out what is happening when, check in at facebook.com/laurelview or give the office a ring on 028 9083 0649.
