German rider Andreas Dibowski jumped a faultless clear round in the final Jumping phase to hold on to his overnight lead with It’s Me XX and win Luhmühlen CCI4* (GER), presented by DHL, penultimate leg of the FEI Classics™ 2015/2016.

Written by Catherine Austen

There was no margin for error for the 50-year-old as second-placed Maxime Livio and Qalao Des Mers (FRA) jumped clear with less than two penalties between the top two.

But Dibowski, veteran of many medal-winning German Eventing teams, held his nerve in front of his enthusiastic home crowd on Susanne Heigel’s 12-year-old ex-racehorse, a son of the Epsom Derby winner Kahyasi.

Diboswki said: “I still cannot believe it. It is quite incredible. My horse performed exceptionally on all three days. He is not a born Dressage horse, but on the Cross Country he is outstanding.”

He explained: “I got It’s Me after his racing career when he was four years old. When he was five and six he was ill and needed intensive care, and only came back to Eventing three years ago aged nine. He felt very well this morning before the Jumping. He loves the atmosphere in a big arena.”

Dibowski was winning Germany’s premier event for the second time after triumphing in 2011 with FRH Butts Leon.

It’s Me XX finished the Dressage phase in fourth place but moved up to pole position after Cross Country, adding just 0.4pen for being one second over the optimum time.

The experienced French combination of Maxime Livio and the Selle Français 12-year-old Qalao Des Mers, winners of the CCI3* at Saumur (FRA) in 2014, finished on their Dressage score of 44.9 to take second.

Livio said: “My horse is a good jumper, and today he was perfect: careful, powerful and concentrated. He gave his best.”

Germany’s Julia Krajewski and Samourai du Thot had led the Dressage but dropped to fifth after Cross Country with 10 time-faults. However, a clear Jumping round elevated them once again to third place.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-1066502" alt="Andreas Dibowski GER riding It`s Me xx in the CCI4* Luhmühlen 2016. Photo credits: Eventing Photo

The 27-year-old was delighted with her CCI4* debut, and said: “I hoped to be among the first five. Now I am on the podium – that is fantastic! Samourai du Thot jumped like a rubber ball today. I could ride fast and it is really fun to jump him when he is like this. I am very proud.”

New Zealand’s Tim Price, who won Luhmühlen CCI4* in 2014, dropped a place from third to fourth this time with a rail down on Ringwood Sky Boy.

Another former winner, Andrew Nicholson (NZL), who took the 2013 event, finished fifth and seventh on Qwanza and Perfect Stranger. Nicholson suffered a neck injury in August 2015 at Gatcombe Park (GBR), but returned seamlessly to the top of the sport and won Bramham CCI3* (GBR) a week ago.

There were just seven clear rounds over Heiko Wahlers’ Jumping track from the 26 competitors who reached the final phase of the CCI4*.

Oliver Townend (GBR), fourth after Cross Country on Black Tie II, withdrew the horse before the final horse inspection this morning, as did Australia’s Emma McDougall, seventh after Cross Country with Belcam Bear.

This was the final time that Captain Mark Phillips will design the Luhmühlen Cross Country course, as Mike Etherington-Smith takes over from 2017. There were no falls and 26 of the 28 Cross Country starters completed with 18 clear rounds, four of which were inside the optimum time.

EIGHTEEN year-old Cathal Daniels scored a notable second place in the main feature class at Camphire International Horse Trials in Co. Waterford this afternoon (Sunday).

Daniels, who has already been selected for the GAIN Horse Feeds Young Rider Eventing Squad that will compete for Ireland in the 2015 European Championships in Strzegom, Poland next month, finished on his dressage score of 49.00 after going clear through the show jumping and cross country phases.

Riding Margaret Kinsella’s Irish Sport Horse mare Rioghan Rua, Daniels finished less than two penalty points off the winning score of Australia’s Christopher Burton and Nobilis 18, and moved up three places from his overnight fifth position.

Irish combinations accounted for seven of the top ten places in the 42-strong international field at Camphire’s three-star competition, with Austin O’Connor and Kilpatrick Knight (ISH)(TIH) finishing in third and Sarah Ennis with the Irish Sport Horse BLM Diamond Delux in fourth.

Fifth place went to Sam Watson and Horseware Lukeswell (ISH)(TIH), while Austin O’Connor took seventh on the Irish Sport Horse Morning Venture and also eighth with another Irish Sport Horse, Balham Houdini.

Tenth place was claimed by Patricia Ryan and the Irish Sport Horse Tullineaskey Hi Ho.

Austin O’Connor featured again as best of the Irish in the CCI2* at Camphire, finishing sixth on 51.3 with Day by Day (ISH) with Christopher Burton again taking the winner’s trophy, riding Santano II.

The CIC2* class was won by Ireland’s Clare Abbott and Glenkeeran River (ISH)(TIH).

Switch back

Jung (32) jumped to the top of the FEI World Eventing Rankings in May for the first time in his career, breaking the one-year reign of William Fox-Pitt (GBR). Fox-Pitt then toppled Jung in June to take back his lead.

Now Jung, the first Eventing athlete to hold the European, world and Olympic titles simultaneously in 2012 after scoring individual and team gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Fox-Pitt, the multiple Olympic, World and European medallist, have switched places yet again!

Jung now has a 17-point lead over Fox-Pitt (591 points), with New Zealand’s Jonelle Price up into third (520 points). Germany’s Ingrid Klimke – winner at Luhmühlen and current leader of the FEI Classics™ series – has also moved up and is now in fourth (504 points). Australia’s Stuart Tinney has leapt into the top 10 and is now in ninth from 17thin the FEI World Eventing Rankings.

Ingrid Klimke (GER) rode brilliantly to produce a clear round under huge pressure to win her home CCI4* at Luhmühlen (GER), presented by DHL, for the first time and set up an unassailable lead in the FEI Classics™ 2014/2015.

Written by Kate Green FEI

In a thrilling finale, her flawless round on the spring-heeled 11-year-old Hannoverian mare FRH Escada JS denied New Zealander Jonelle Price her first CCI4* victory by just one-tenth of a penalty.

Klimke’s trainer, Kurt Gravemeier, had promised that he would come and help her on the final day if she was in the top three. “So I said to him, fill your car up with gas and come here!” said a smiling Klimke.

“We have trained together for so long and when he said to me: ‘You must go for it!’ I was full of confidence. I’m really thrilled with my fantastic horse. She felt so full of herself today.”

When Klimke entered the arena, she could not even afford a single time fault because Price, on her exciting Olympic prospect, the 10-year-old Dressage-bred Faerie Dianimo (by Keystone Dimaggio out of a Catherston Dazzler mare), had ridden a perfect round.

So, too, had Michael Jung (GER) and his wise 15-year-old gelding, La Biosthetique Sam FBW, third, Christopher Burton (AUS) on the rising star Graf Liberty, fourth, and Sir Mark Todd (NZL) with NZB Campino, fifth, which meant that, unusually for this level, there was no change to the top five after Cross Country.

Heiko Wahler’s Jumping course invited forward riding, but there was a tricky treble combination and the time was tight – 12 of the 25 finishers had time faults. Nicky Roncoroni (GBR), lying 17th on Stonedge, was the first to produce a completely penalty-free round and this elevated her to 12th place.

The young New Zealander Jesse Campbell, sixth after Cross Country on Kaapachino, had an unfortunate 21-penalty round which dropped him to 16th place and allowed the American combination of Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen to rise a place to sixth with their clear.

World team bronze medallist Tim Lips (NED) is well known for his prowess in the Jumping ring and a clear on Bayro lifted him five places to seventh. World team gold medallists Dirk Schrade and the aptly named Hop and Skip also rose five places with a fault-free round, to eighth.

Looking towards the FEI Classics™ 2014/2015 finale at Burghley (GBR) in September, Klimke is out in front but her peers, such as second-placed Michael Jung, who has now overtaken four-times series winner William Fox-Pitt, Christopher Burton, Mark Todd and Tim and Jonelle Price, will be in fierce and fascinating competition for the other cash prizes.

Final results

1 Ingrid Klimke/FRH Escada JS (GER) 32.7 + 0 + 0 = 32.7

2 Jonelle Price/Faerie Dianimo (NZL) 32.8 + 0 + 0 = 32.8

3 Michael Jung/La Biosthetique Sam FBW (GER) 34.2 + 0 + 0 = 34.2

4 Christopher Burton/Graf Liberty (AUS) 36.4 + 0 + 0 = 36.4

5 Sir Mark Todd/NZB Campino (NZL) 36.5 + 0 + 0 = 36.5

6 Clark Montgomery/Loughan Glen (USA) 37.1 + 0.4 + 0 = 37.5

7 Tim Lips/Bayro (NED) 40.8 + 2.4 + 0 = 43.2

8 Dirk Schrade/Hop and Skip (GER) 44.4 + 0 + 0 = 44.4

9 Niklas Bschorer/Tom Tom Go 3 (GER) 40.7 + 0 + 4 = 44.7

10 Rebecca Howard/Riddle Master (CAN) 42.5 + 0 + 5 = 47.5

Starting in 15th place after dressage with the Irish Sport Horse gelding Horseware Stellor Rebound, which is jointly owned by Horseware Ltd., Niki Potterton and Orla Ennis, the duo then produced a clear cross country round inside the time, and rose to eighth overall.

Sunday’s show jumping phase again produced a top class performance from Ennis, with no jumping or time faults, and the combination finished in fourth place on their dressage score of 45.7.

The winner was overnight leader, Britain’s Flora Harris and Bayano who, with Ennis, was one of two combinations in the top five who stayed on their opening dressage score throughout. Harris came home with 36.8 penalties.

One of the flagship competitions in international eventing, Bramham is a famously tough test for both horse and rider, and a top five place considered a major achievement.

It is set to be another busy week at Ravensdale Lodge as the centre plays host to the Young Event Horse Series (YES) on Thursday 11th June closely followed by RDS qualifiers for Connemara Performance Hunter & Performance Irish Draught on Saturday 13th June. Both of these events will combine arena jumping followed by a session out cross-country while the YES will also include a dressage test as well as in hand performance, confirmation & suitability judging. Regular weekly shows will be held around the above two shows as SJI registered show jumping for horses & ponies is moved to Tuesday 9th June instead of its normal Wednesday slot in order to avoid a clash with RDS qualifiers. There is a start time of 11am for the six modified horse classes which run from 80cm to 1.30m while the usual 128cm, 138cm & 148cm pony classes commence at 5.30pm.

Horse & pony training league continues outdoors on Friday 12th June from 5.30pm with classes from X poles to 1.10m with the additional Saddle Pad draw for all entries on the day proving very popular with large numbers attending last week. This competition has a start time of 2pm for the 70cm class which is followed by the 85cm class at 3pm and the 1m class at 4pm. The month draws to a close with the centre’s annual RDS qualifiers for Amateurs on Saturday 27th June while July will start with a bang on Sunday 5th July when Ravensdale Lodge will hold their Mid Summer Mini Grand Prix Show which will have five classes from 90cm to 1.35m Mini Grand Prix.
