Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD officially launched the Dublin Horse Show today June 15th at the RDS, Dublin.

The participation of many Rio-bound gold medal hopefuls at this year’s Dublin Horse Show means a change from the traditional August dates to July 20-24 for this summer institution. Despite the earlier date, the same great combinations will be on offer: International show jumping and the stylish Dundrum Town Centre Ladies’ Day, family entertainment and the best in Irish craft, as well as good food, great shopping and a social occasion like no other.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD officially launched the Show:

“After 143 years the Dublin Horse Show continues to be Ireland’s leading equestrian event drawing up to 100,000 horse enthusiasts and visitors from home and overseas. The show provides a full event programme which is being extended every year, ensuring there is something new for everyone and 2016 is no exception. This year is an Olympic year and carries with it the added excitement of witnessing up close Irish and international riders who will be bidding for gold in Rio. I wish everyone taking part in the event every success and hope that those attending, whether from near or from far, enjoy the five days of sport, entertainment and Irish hospitality.”

From July 20 -24 the RDS showgrounds will host Olympic hopefuls who participate in the 14 international competitions. Last year Ireland won the coveted Aga Khan Trophy as part of the Furusiyya FEI Nations’ Cup™ series; Antrim-based Egyptian rider Sameh el Dahan cleared 2.20m to win the Land Rover Puissance; while American Kent Farrington went one better to win the valuable Longines Grand Prix. As always, the international riders will be warming up around the showgrounds next to competitors, young and old, who compete in the many national competitions for whom the Dublin Horse Show is the annual pinnacle.

Michael Duffy, RDS Chief Executive commented: “The last time we moved to July for the Show was in 1992 for the Barcelona Olympics. That year Ireland won the Aga Khan trophy so we hope that it’s a good omen. The Horse Show was originally founded to encourage and promote the Irish sport horse industry, as one part of the RDS philanthropic aims, and this continues to be the primary purpose, providing Irish breeders and producers with an international platform to showcase the very best of Irish sport horses. Equestrianism is just one of the areas that we specialise in, and we work in science, the arts, industry and agriculture throughout the year.”

One of the premier style events of the summer, the Dundrum Town Centre Ladies’ Day takes place on Thursday July 21 and this year has a brilliant prize of a €10,000 shopping voucher for the Centre. Thursday has been known as Ladies’ Day for well over 100 years at the RDS and this is the second year of sponsorship by Dundrum Town Centre. Gents won’t be left out with ‘Best Dressed Man’ competition sponsored by Louis Copeland.Other prize categories include the ‘Great Lengths Most Creative Hat’ and ‘Longines: Elegance is an Attitude’.

Speaking about the Horse Show, Head of Dublin for Fáilte Ireland, Keelin Fagan explained:

“The Dublin Horse Show is an important feature in the Dublin festival calendar demonstrating Ireland’s capacity for hosting international events. Sporting events and our ability to stage such spectacles, are a very important part of what Ireland has to offer as a destination. The Dublin Horse Show also adds to the strong event calendar which Fáilte Ireland has built up for Dublin – a calendar which allows us to pitch Dublin as a place where there is always something compelling and different to see and do.”

The first ever International Connemara Performance competition will take place during the 2015 Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, August 5 – 9. Teams from Ireland, the UK and France will compete in the competition based on the format of the highly successful Connemara Performance Hunter Championship.

Three teams of four pony and rider combinations will contest this inaugural event for a prize fund of €3,900. The winners will be decided by the combined total of the three highest scoring ponies on the team – similar to that of International teams in the Nations’ Cup. Not only will the competition provide an opportunity to showcase the qualities and abilities of Ireland’s native sports pony on an international stage, but crucially it will give young Irish riders a unique opportunity to develop their team skills.

The team to represent Ireland will be selected from the top four pony and rider combinations, who meet the age criteria in Connemara Performance Hunter Class 71 and the 8 – 15 year old category at the Show. Three riders on the team must be under the age of 21 on the 1January 2015, there will be no upper age limit for the fourth rider. This new Class promises to be a showcase event for the native pony breed; a mini-Nations’ Cup, which will show-off the athleticism, versatility and wonderful disposition of the Connemara pony.

Qualifiers for the Connemara Performance Hunter Championship will commence this weekend, on Saturday June 6 at Scarteen, Knocklong, Co. Limerick, followed by Ravensdale, Dundalk, Co. Louth on Saturday June 13, Forth Mountain, Barntown, Co. Wexford on Sunday June 21 and culminating in Rincoola, Granard, Co. Longford on Saturday June 27.

As part of our philanthropic mission in equestrianism, the RDS remains dedicated to showcasing the sporting talents of the Connemara, and to supporting the development of the equine tourism industry in Ireland.

Online ticket bookings and a provisional Programme of Events for the 2015 Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show are now available at www.dublinhorseshow.com

IRELAND dominated the Puissance competition at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show last night (Saturday), with nine combinations clear after the second jump-off, and the failure of last year’s winner, Colombia’s Daniel Bluman, to make it past the two metre height.

But it was Cork’s Billy Twomey and Kilkenny’s Michael Hutchinson who shared the 20,000 euro pay cheque when they were the only riders in the fourth jump-off to clear the big wall at 2m50 (7’3″).

Thirty seven year-old Twomey, riding the gelding Afp’S Quick Vainqueur, said afterwards: “What a horse this is. I got him just last week, he’s a puissance specialist, and all I had to do today was get him in the right place, and he did the rest.”

Hutchinson, who is 24 and from a distinguished show jumping family, commented on his 13 year-old gelding Acorad 3: “I’m so happy with the horse. He was not 100 per cent fit, but he gave me everything here today, helped on, of course by this wonderful crowd at the RDS.”

Alexander Butler and Tsjakka took third place, dislodging the top brick in the wall on the final jump-off, but collecting 6,000 euro for his efforts.

Billy Twomey was the first competitor today to see the Irish flag raised again in the main arena of the RDS when he scooped the 4,600 euro prize for first place in the big Accumulator class.

The Cork-born rider was piloting Katrina Moore’s bay stallion Royale du Rouet, and beat fellow-countryman Cameron Hanley on Eleonore Paschoud and Yves Bouvier’s gelding Newton du Haut Bois by just over a second.

Tipperary’s Thomas Ryan filled fourth place for Ireland on the Irish Sport Horse Cruise On Clover, while Co. Down’s Conor Swail placed tenth on the chestnut stallion Grafton.

Greg Broderick and the Irish Sport Horse MHS Going Global were best of the Irish in the following 1m50 Jump-Off competition, faulting once in the five horse jump-off to finish fourth behind German winner Daniel Deusser and the bay gelding Fyloe V. Claeyssenhof, who were one of three combinations to go clear. Ireland’s Denis Lynch and All Star 5 placed tenth, having one pole down in the first round.

Tipperary’s Greg Broderick riding Hitchcock Van Overis, took the winners prize in Barnadown’s third RDS qualifier for this year’s Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 year-old International class, to be held at The Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show.

Written by Brian Hennessy

Owned by Mary Ellen De Ruschi, the seven year old stallion Hitchcock Van Overis is by the stallion Darco out of a Corrado dam and this latest result is Greg Broderick’s second win in this year’s 7 & 8 year-old RDS qualifiers, having also finished first at the Meadows Equestrian Centre with Javas Keltic Mist.

Barnadown’s 7 & 8 year-old RDS qualifier was sponsored by George Mullins Transport Carlow and runner up spot went to Co Westmeath rider Michael Murphy aboard Francis Derwin’s seven year old gelding Curra Quin (by Harlequin Du Carel out of a Clover Hill dam).

Cavan rider Neal Fearon will have a busy week at the 2014 Dublin Horse Show, having already booked a ticket to the Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 year-old International class at the RDS with Camillo VDL at the second qualifier in Coilog, Fearon was in electrifying form at Barnadown taking third place with the FT Showjumpers owned Cessina 4 (by Converter out of a Come On mare), while Fearon also took the fifth and final golden ticket to the RDS on offer at the Wexford venue with another seven year old, KMS Clintland, owned by Ivor Broderick the gelding is by Clinton out of a Corland dam.

Waterford’s Francis Connors also booked a place in the Dublin Horse Show, Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 year-old International class when finishing in fourth place at Barnadown with the only mare in the top five, Hilda Anthony’s Lates Du Carel who as the name suggests is by Harlequin du Carel out of a Calypso dam

This is the third year that Connolly’s RED MILLS have sponsored the prestigious International 7 & 8 year old competition at the RDS, which features the top twenty combinations from four qualifiers held around Ireland, who are then joined at the Dublin Horse Show by up to twenty-four additional International entries from around the world.

Last year saw German rider Rolf Moormann and Valeska 96 crowned Connolly’s RED MILLS International 7 & 8 year old champions at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, with Irish rider Eddie Moloney runner up with MHS Prime while third place went to Tipperary’s Greg Broderick with MHS Going Global.

The fourth and final qualifier for the Connolly’s RED MILLS 7 & 8 year-old International class at the RDS will take place on June 25th at Galway Equestrian Centre, Athenry, Co. Galway

After an intensive campaign to get to to the finals in Dublin, the Mid Antrim Hunt Inter Hunt Chase team competed very successfully at the Dublin Horse Show recently.

They came third equal and were only knocked out by the eventual winners, the Killinicks in the semi finals. Congratulations must go to the efforts of this tireless hunt chasing team and support network, with riders making no mistakes in their competitive rounds.

The team consisted of Beverley Caves, Orlaith McLaughlin, Fiona Magill and Jamie Sloan who should be congratulated on the great effort needed to get to Dublin Show, and to do so well there.

They are very grateful to Andy Hamilton who provided the first impetus for the team and has driven so many miles for them, encouraging them all the way. Orlaith’s father Davy McLaughlin has been a stalwart Chef D’Equipe, also putting the miles in and helping at every turn.

On a few occasions Paul Caves and Benny O’Kane have stood in as substitutes but in general it has been the same four which has enabled them to get their performance honed to the high level and speed required.

The team won the Best Turned Out prize for the league, which shows the attention to detail put into the presentation of each rider and their horse. Fiona Sloan won the most entertaining rider, a role that had previously gone to George Devlin and Ian Wilson in the past at Balmoral. During the occasions when a junior event has been held at the Inter Hunt Chase League events, Joe and Bob Hamilton, Saoirse McLaughlin and Jamie Boyd have had the opportunity to compete.

While some teams use their hunt chasing horses only for this purpose, the truly great horses of Mid Antrim team will have a short rest in recognition of their hard work, then enjoy the season with their owners. Hopefully after the thrill of the main arena at the RDS in front of a huge noisy crowd, the hunting won’t seem too tame!
