As always we have a number of animals who are waiting for a loving home to finally call their own, please forward this mail on to anyone you think may be interested in any of our residents below.

Terence the rooster is looking for a new home.

Having grown up with his brothers and sisters he now gets picked on by the other boys and has had to be separated from them. Do you have a flock of hens who could do with a man in their lives?

This beautiful boy (as yet unnamed) is a 5 year old, 15hh gelding. He is well handled but we are not sure if he has been ridden as we do not have enough hours in the day to assess him properly. If anyone would like to take him to work with him or even come up to the sanctuary to help work with him please contact us.

These two have had a few expressions of interest but no solid offers of new homes yet. Please share far and wide to help us get them a loving new home! They are good with people, kids and other dogs! They are also house trained.

Harriet

Harriet was found collapsed on the side of the road near to the sanctuary and is now looking for a special forever home to call her own.
She would like an indoor home with mature owners where she could (at times) be the centre of attention but also have her own space as she sometimes likes to keep herself company without being disturbed.

Raymond

Raymond is a 15.2hh, red&white, 14 year old gelding. He would make a lovely companion or possible light hack. He has a lovely nature and gets on well with other horses. He loves human attention and would love a home where he could be spoiled!

Angel and Teddy are a very special re-homing case as they must go together. Having both come in to us in a very bad state, they have bonded so well together that we do not intend to separate them. If you would be interested in offering them a home together please contact us.

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary Annual Sponsored Dog Walk 2014

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary, CLAS, in Co. Antrim will be holding it’s Annual Sponsored Dog Walk on Saturday 10th May, leaving the Sanctuary at 1pm with light refreshments on return. Traditionally this is a chance for everyone to get together to support the charity and to bring their dogs, many of whom are rescued dogs, on a 4 mile sponsored walk or simply come with friends and family. The route is along country roads and is suitable for buggies and well behaved dogs on leads. Some of the charity’s horses and ponies also enjoy the walk.

If you can’t make it to the walk, you can still help by sponsoring one of the charity’s rescued dogs who will be taking part. Alternatively, why not hold an event in your own area and ask friends and family to sponsor.

Sarah, pictured, is still looking for a special loving home that can accommodate her needs. She is completely deaf and partially blind but still has bundles of energy to burn so she would need a large enclosed run and plenty of regular long walks.

Donations can be made to the charity by several methods. By cheques made payable to CLAS, via the Donate buttons on Crosskennan’s facebook page & website or by texting CLAS52 followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070 eg CLAS52 5

Or donate online: http://www.justgiving.com/Crosskennan-Lane-Animal-Sanctuary1

If you are interested in taking part and would like a sponsor pack or are interested in helping the charity in any way, please phone CLAS on 028 9446 5384 or email crosskennan@hotmail.co.uk.

All the money collected will go directly towards the care of the horses, dogs, cats and chickens at Crosskennan. The sanctuary needs the support of the public more than ever to continue it’s animal welfare and education work. Please help us to continue our fight against animal cruelty in NI by making a donation towards our work.

Due to the demand for it’s Xmas ballot tickets and Xmas cards Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary,CLAS, will be opening it’s reception area on Sunday 8th Dec from 1-3pm to allow the public to come up to collect tickets and cards. All the proceeds will go towards the animal welfare charity’s Winter Feed fund. It will be a normal working day at the charity’s yard and visitors are advised to wear suitable footwear for the muddy outdoor conditions. If you can’t make it on Sunday ballot tickets and cards can be posted out if details are phoned or emailed to the sanctuary.

Unfortunately the charity will not be having a Xmas Open Day this year due to the effects of last months rain on the fields and grounds but volunteers are hoping that the public will get behind them and help raise much needed funds. Perhaps supporters could sell tickets and cards amongst friends and family or ask their local business’s to allow them to sell ballot tickets to their customers.

This year’s Xmas ballot tickets feature a little Shih Tzu called Lola whose story touched the hearts of so many people. Lola and her eight friends were rescued from squalid conditions. She had been locked inside a

Lola on arrival

cat carrier, her leg was badly broken and so caked in faeces that she could barely move. It was thought she was dead at first but volunteers saw her tail try to wag through her knotted filthy coat! Lola needed her coat carefully clipped off - the matted mess of a coat weighed more than she did. Lola’s feet and coat were caked in her own faeces; her nails were so overgrown they were embedded into her pads and one foot was oozing with pus. She had been left with a broken leg that had ‘healed’ in a terrible position and the vet had no choice but to amputate the mangled leg. Lola’s operation was a success and she is coping very well on three legs.

She required intensive nursing and lots of TLC, so she was fostered by one of Crosskennan’s volunteers – Debbie. After going through so much together, Lola and Debbie formed a very strong bond and Debbie and her family decided to keep her! What a happy ending for Lola – she is now being treated like a princess!

We want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has already donated towards the costs of caring for these little dogs and the many rescued horses in our care. We DESPERATELY need funds to help pay for their care and are making a heartfelt appeal to our supporters to PLEASE give what they can via this link:

http://www.crosskennanlane.org.uk/Make-a-Donation.aspx or you can simply text CLAS12 and the amount you want to donate to 70070. Alternatively you can post a cheque or postal order to 26 Crosskennan Lane, Antrim, BT41 2QY

For further information on how you can help, volunteer, rehome or sponsor an animal, contact Crosskennan on 028 94465384 or emailcrosskennan@hotmail.co.uk.

Thank you for your support.

The route is along country roads and is suitable for buggies and well behaved dogs on leads. Some of the charity’s horses and ponies also enjoy the walk.

Dates are available for the 2013 abseil in April, May, and June, so if you are interested get in touch with CLAS for more details .

Participants are asked to pay a registration fee of £30 to book a place and to raise sponsorship amongst family, friends, work colleagues, employers or clubs.

So if you are looking for a challenge and want to do something different, contact CLAS, Tel 028 9446 5384 or email crosskennan@hotmail.co.uk

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary, the first educational equine welfare charity to have been set up in N.Ireland, began as a response to an inadequate animal welfare system. Since being granted charitable status in 1996, it has brought equine welfare to the fore. It is committed to promoting awareness and knowledge of animal welfare issues throughout the province.

The charity is concerned with the rescue and rehabilitation of animals, in particular horses and ponies but also dogs, cats and chickens, that have been abused and neglected. At CLAS the animals are encouraged, wherever possible, to ‘earn their keep’ and following a comprehensive training period, many of our horses raise funds for those that are in need by participating in the Animals Helping People Programs, Animal Care Courses, Pony Parties, Own a Pony Experiences, Coffee Mornings & Afternoons and Community Events.

Over the past week, the subject of horse welfare has been widely reported in the media, most notably due to horse meat found in ‘beef’ burgers and the uncover footage exposing the abuse endured by horses sent for slaughter. Questions have now been raised about the lack of adequate regulations enforced within the horse meat industry and what action needs to be taken to ensure horses sent for slaughter are not exposed to the barbaric and inhumane welfare breaches captured on film.

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary is currently NI’s only horse rescue charity and they have described how the recent revelations are no surprise to them. Lyn Friel, Founder of Crosskennan explained “Obviously people are very upset and angry about the footage they’ve seen, but we have been campaigning for years about the lack of regulations within the horse meat industry and the need for everyone within the equine sector to work together to improve the current unprecedented equine welfare crisis. We wanted to highlight the number of loopholes within the system especially given the unprecedented number of horses being discarded and deemed surplus to requirement. We are trying to get people to choose a dignified end for their horse rather than sending it into a system with little or no welfare checks; those who naively think their horse will have a quick and clean end to its life are sadly mistaken! Having your horse quietly put to sleep in familiar surroundings is the least we can do for them when their time comes.”

Lyn continued “Whilst we DO NOT condone the slaughter of horses, we accept that it is going to continue regardless, and as such we’re calling for:

Significantly improved welfare standards

CCTV in ALL slaughterhouses; abattoir workers are less likely to breach welfare regulations if they know they are being filmed.

The current equine passport regulations to be reviewed and enforced to ensure traceability for all horses whilst also providing their comprehensive medical history;

The need for regular veterinary checks to be performed within the slaughterhouses

Compulsory licencing of holding yards run by agencies acting on behalf of slaughterhouses. Quite often the level of suffering endured in these yards is horrendous – injured, sick and neglected horses stand in filth, without access to food or water as they await their journey to death.”

According to Crosskennan, one of the major factors feeding into this problem is the huge numbers of abandoned and unwanted horses being dumped and left to fend for themselves. Lyn explained “For years we’ve called for an end to indiscriminate breeding and also a major reduction in horses purposely being bred for either the track or competition due to the sheer number of horses being discarded into the meat industry just because they “didn’t tick all the boxes.” Brood mares, sometimes heavily pregnant are commonplace in the meat yards, as are yearlings and young stock that didn’t make the grade. The surplus number of unwanted horses (estimated to be between 20-30,000 in the north and south of Ireland alone) now completely outweighs the demand and as a direct result, their price has plummeted with horses regularly being sold for as little as £5. Once an animal becomes that worthless in monetary terms it is inevitable that its welfare will suffer as they will simply be seen as disposable. It’s an appalling situation and one that is being made worse by the seemingly endless indiscriminate breeding of horses and ponies with no future.”

Crosskennan are receiving calls on a daily basis about dumped or abandoned horses that are either fly-grazing or left to wander the roads. They are currently in the middle of an incredibly difficult rescue operation involving horses dumped in Cavehill Country Park, Belfast. Lyn and a team of dedicated Crosskennan volunteers have been accessing the situation for a number of weeks but their efforts to progress with the rescue are being hampered by both the dangerous terrain and severe weather conditions. There are approximately 20 semi-feral horses running loose over a vast area of Cavehill. These include injured and pregnant horses whose body condition is now starting to deteriorate due to lack of food. Lyn said “We’ve put a considerable amount of time and resources into trying to rescue these horses, but our efforts are being hampered due to the obvious dangers presented by the uneven and boggy terrain combined with unpredictable weather conditions. However, once we manage to round up the horses to be assessed and transported to safety, we are then put in the difficult position of trying to find places for them. Currently we are full to capacity with over 100 horses in our care and we simply cannot continue to rescue horses in need unless the public support us by way of financial donations and also by coming forward to offer one of our rehabilitated rescue horses a home – whether it be temporary or permanent. It’s time everyone started to listen to the appeals made by equine welfare groups to stop the indiscriminate breeding and offer a rescue horse a home instead of buying one from a dealer or breeder. We have some fabulous horses in our care, most perfectly healthy and being re-schooled to rid them of the baggage heaped upon them by man’s ignorance and human error. Every time we rehome one of our beautiful rescue horses, it creates a space for us to save more horses in desperate need of our help. We would appeal to anyone with stabling and turnout facilities to get in touch with us to offer one of our rehabilitated horses or ponies a second chance in life. We need to keep freeing up space at the Sanctuary to allow us to admit more needy horses. We are more than prepared to offer our support to anyone who rehomes one of our ponies to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge to care for them and continue with their training needs.”

In a recent press release the National Equine Welfare Council explained that • The rescue charities are all completely overwhelmed with the numbers of abandoned and stray horses callously left to fend for themselves and facing a slow death from starvation. It has now reached the point where authorities are looking towards destroying large numbers of abandoned horses simply because there is nowhere for them. IF YOU HAVE STABLING FACILITES AND TURNOUT AREAS THEN PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING ON A RESCUE HORSE TO ESSENTIALLY SAVE ANOTHER HORSES LIFE!Charities are telling government and public that they will not be able to solve this problem alone. They want government and the public to become part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Government can do this by proposing new legislation to encourage responsible ownership and improve accountability of owners including the enforcement of passport regulations, and the public can help by rehoming a rescue horse/pony or in the case of horse owners, keeping on top of their own situations to ensure they do not spiral into welfare problems. They can also limit breeding of their own horses or stop breeding completely. It has now reached the point where authorities are looking towards destroying large numbers of abandoned horses simply because there is nowhere for them.

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary now has to raise £15,000 per month to keep their gates open for NI’s abandoned and neglected horses. They receive no government funding and solely rely on public donations to continue with their rescue work. If you would like to make a donation to the Sanctuary you can do so online via their website www.crosskennanlane.org.uk or simply text CLAS12 and the amount you want to donate to 70070. Alternatively you can post a cheque or postal order to 26 Crosskennan Lane, Antrim, BT41 3SG. If you would like to offer one of their horse or ponies a temporary/permanent home or set up a monthly donation by direct debit, then please contact them on 02894 465384 or crosskennan@hotmail.co.uk
