Connell Hill was a hive of activity from early morning as competitors and spectators arrived for the SJI Grand Prix Horse Show. The Grooms were all up early preparing horses and tack and riders rearing to go as all turned out in an immaculate and professional manner.

As competitors qualified for the jump offs they had spectators on the edges of their seats cheering as they entered the arena to jump a challenging Grand Prix course designed and built by Will Crean. The show started with the 1.0 m class and very quickly the excitement and adrenalin was rising as the riders were all chasing the first prize of the day sponsored by The Market Tavern, Magherafelt and Dodds Coach Holidays, this was a dream come true when Nicole Barr on ‘Florida Daydream’ took the first win of the day with Dawn McKeown on ‘Legaland Tadmus’ taking second and with only points of a second in it Julie Steele on ‘Wellview Lenny’ in third place. I can do it was the attitude as the 1.10 m class got under way with John Higgins on ‘Ikan’ doing it taking the first place sponsored by Dawn McKeown Photography / John Street Gallery, Ballymena.

The riders were all going for it when the 1.20 m class started sponsored by Barr Tec, but as there is only one winner it was Rebecca Patterson on ‘Millthyme San Francisco’. The spectators held their breath as riders took to the arena for the 1.30 m class, this class was sponsored by Horse First and EJC Contracts, corners were cut and the speed picked up but Gareth Clingan on ‘Senor D’ galloped away with the prize of the day. Barry McCormack on ‘Armani Velvet’ took second and Harry Marshall on ‘Whisper’ third place.

The 80 cm double clears sponsored by Ulster Livestock Care, Coagh, were Clare Spillane-Pattison on ‘Cor De La’, Tanya Smith on ‘Fancy Diamond’ and Clare Spillane-Pattison on ‘Little Task’. Parklands Veterinary Group, Cookstown sponsored the 90 cm class and the double clear rounds were Sharon Junk on ‘Cookstown Shutterfly’ and Clare Spillane-Pattison on ‘Little Task’.

A huge thank you to all our sponsors who made the Show the success it was and all our competitors.

The SJI Horse League continues next week, 23rd March at 10.00 am.

PLEASE NOTE There will be NO SJI Pony League on Sunday 24th but will continue the following Sunday 31st March at 10.00 am. Horse Training show on Thursday night and Pony and horse training shows are on Friday nights at 6.30 pm.

The snow capped Antrim hills did not deter the younger riders as they turned out for this the second day of the SJI Pony League at Connell Hill. Mr Will Crean built a challenging course for these competitors as they jumped to qualify for jump offs. The aroma of coffee filled the air as Leigh McVeigh on Cappuccino left nothing to chance speed their way to victory in the 138 cm 1.0 m class. As the day progressed the snow showers still had no effect on the determination of these athletes to achieve clear rounds. The 148 cm 1.0 m class saw Gareth McCracken on Ultimate Cruise, Leigh McVeigh on Cashmere Jumper, Emma McEntee on Shandor and Nicola Eames on Euro Silver all collect red rosettes. Emma McEntee then went on to win the 148 cm 1.20 m on her super pony Mini Cooper II

As the half way mark was hit for the SJI Horse League at Connell Hill the trailer, horse box and car parks filled nearly to capacity with horses and riders full of enthusiasm to jump at these great facilities. Spectators packed into the viewing gallery to shelter from the biting wind and enjoy a hot snack while watching some magnificent jumping over a flowing course of fences built by Will Crean.

Many seem to be benefiting from the Thursday Training Shows where improvements of ability from horses and riders are coming through to the registered shows. Suzanne Posnett on ‘Carrickview Gin and Tonic’ jumped a double clear in their first 1.0 m class. Liam McKee on ‘Spielberg’ also jumped their first 1.20 m class with a double clear. First show of the year for ‘Whisper’ ridden by Kristopher Marshall went home with a double clear on his record. The miserable day did not rub off on competitors as they prepared for the 1.30 m class, as competitors jumped against the clock no-one could catch John Higgins on ‘Catch Me’ as they took seconds off the clock to win the 1.30 m class. Philip Gaw on ‘Rocky Bond’ took a very deservedly 2nd place with Anita Doherty on ‘Fitz’ taking 3rd place.

Saturday 16th March is the SJI Grand Prix Horse Show commencing at 9.30 am sharp, starting with 1.0 m class – 1.30 m followed by 90 and 80 cm classes. This £2,000 prize fund show is sponsored by The Market Tavern Magherafelt, Dodds Coach Holidays, Dawn McKeown Photography/John Street Gallery Ballymena, Barr Tec, Connell Hill, Horse First Newry, Parklands Veterinary Group Cookstown and Ulster Livestock Care Coagh.

It is good to see the confidence and ability rising in both horse and riders, as competitors turn out each week to the training shows at Connell Hill. These competitors are taking advantage of a course of fences purposely built by Will Crean to train both horse and riders to gain confidence and encourage learning. The 90 cm class saw Lorraine Redmond on Pattons Cruise jump a double clear and with confidence went on to jump another double clear in their first 1.0 m class.
