The superb outdoor arena at Connell Hill hosted a most fabulous ‘Two Day Horse Show’ kindly sponsored by Mr Alistair Barr, BarrTec, and Mr Vincent Burton, Burton Sport Horses, which saw over the two day show some speed tracks incorporating fast technical thinking designed by Mr Will Crean and Judged by Heather Coyle and Nicola Tang on Saturday with David Greene and Julie McLernon on Sunday. This Two Day show demonstrated some most athletic jumping which required precision with controlled riding. The first award of this hugely competitive show was presented to Gillian Lee, from Tobermore, as she demonstrated much of these skills winning the 80 cm class on Saturday to then jump double clear and be amongst the prize winners of the 90 cm class on ‘Luidams Diamond’, an up and coming athlete of the future. There were no diversions for the next challenge, the 1.0 m class which saw Paul Humphires, from Dromore, jump double clear on ‘Direct Route’ with Deborah Newberry, from Ballyclare, on ‘Lurgan Air’ and ‘Mullaghdrin Diamond Day’. The mischievous Stephanie Scullion, from Knockloughrim’ won the 1.10 m class on ‘Tease Me Tiger’, and taking the royalties in the 1.20 m class as he cruised into first place on ‘Calgot Cruise’ and then second on ‘Clagan Royale’ was Stephen Brown from Magherafelt. Emily Turkington, from Cookstown, had a most successful day winning first place in the 1.30 m class on ‘Allihies Diamond Boy’ and third on ‘Willem’ with Hannah Smyth rocketing into second place on ‘Breemount Rocket’.

Competitors enjoying the friendly welcoming atmosphere returned on Sunday, the second day of this show, to take the challenge of tracks testing ability on this first class surface with superb ground control thus enabling speed with sure footedness. The day commenced with Stephen Gibson, from Armagh, on ‘Cavalier Knight’, Claire Doherty, from Eglinton, on Carnoneybridge Challenger’ and Edward Little, from Ballymena, on ‘Obos Quality Delight’ and Galwaybay Untouchable G’ all jump double clear rounds. No one could catch Sean Nangle as he took the 1.0 m class by storm winning in an incredibly fast time on, Robert & Diane Lowry’s mare, ‘Sally (Per-ID). As it came to the 1.10 m class there were split seconds in the times as competitors threw caution to the wind and ‘went for it’ which saw flying into first place Stephen Gibson on ‘Milford Cool Flyer’, springing into second place Lucy Hanna, from Dunadry, on ‘Spring Rumba’ and scooping a most deservedly third was Sarah Jane Alexander, from Toomebridge, on ‘I Am Legend’. Any Horse competition can be like the lottery but when it came to the 1.20 m class Ana Desmond, from Greenisland’, had it all under control winning the honours of first place on ‘Rollover’ with Rebecca Patterson, from Newtownards, picking up second on ‘Crucio SR’. Even though the show was drawing to a close with the last class, the 1.30 m class, the adrenalin, the buzz, the excitement still filled the air which saw local man, Philip Gaw, from Randalstown, claim victory on ‘Rocky Bond’ with Suzanne Posnett, from Comber, take second on ‘Cocos Mademoiselle’, Laura Brown, from Magherafelt, on ‘Zion Cruise’ third, and Tom Doherty, from Carrickfergus, picking up fourth on ‘Intro-Link Larry’ and fifth on ‘Vangelis (Kwpn).

Connell Hill would like to express their gratitude to Mr Alistair Barr, BarrTec, Mr Vincent Burton, Burton Sport Horses, for their sponsorship, Course Designer Mr W Crean, Judges Heather Coyle, Nicola Tang, David Greene and Julie McLernon, Photographers Mr Gareth Stewart and Mr Joe Kirkpatrick, thanks also to the arena crew who worked tirelessly throughout this show and of course you the competitors accompanied by your grooms, without whom this show would not have been the success it was, and we welcome you all back in the not too distant future.

The Friday night rain accompanied by a chill in the air did not deter competitors turning up with horses and ponies groomed ready to take the challenge of jumping a track designed to school and encourage both horses and riders. Willow Dawson on ‘Spotty Josh’ was first into the arena for the X-Poles class followed by Kim Moore on ‘Little Bride’ and Max McDonnell on ‘Cocky’. Introducing her young horse to colourful poles and bright lights with a clear round in the 50 cm class was Pamela Moore on ‘Billy’. Two future young athletes for the future who jumped clear in the 50 cm class and then jumped double clear in the 60 cm class were Maeve Carlin on ‘Cinders’ and Adam Sossick on ‘Loughview Sweet Delight’. Taking the 70 cm class by storm with the only double clear was Elle Brownlow on ‘Spritzer’, who went on to jump double clear in the 80 cm class with Sally Mackie on ‘Barney’, John McKinney on ‘Clover’ and Cherie McHugh on ‘Morgan’. To end a great night of jumping Seaneen McCoy on her super pony ‘Hazel Star’ jumped double clear in the 1.0 m class.

Training Shows will continue next Friday night at 6.30 pm, X-Poles – 1.10 m classes, where everyone will receive a warm welcome with café facilities for hot and cold drinks/snacks.

Let It Snow! – As the horses and riders prepared for what was a fantastic days jumping ahead flurrys of snow fell but the sun shone through and heightened everyones spirits. 2013 has started superbly well for Emma Barkley who jumped double clear rounds in the 80 and 90 cm classes with her two horses ‘Tawnybrack Diamond’ and ‘Jools Jewel’. It was good to see Judith Sossick back in the saddle entering the arena in her usual style of highly disciplined performance riding, jumping double clear in the 1.0 m class on her own ‘Loughview Diamond Clover’. Claire Sloan had a double celebration as she jumped a double clear on ‘Lord Luidan’ in the 1.0 m class on her birthday. Thankfully Zoe Woods did get permission to ride as she jumped a double clear in the 1.10 m class on her Mothers’, Tracy Woods, horse ‘Without Permission’. Luck was on John Higgins side when he had multiple double clears during the day and the 1.20 m class saw no different as ‘In Luck’ and ‘KEC Free Falling’ both went clear. Will Crean who had built a challenging course throughout the day left nothing to chance for the 1.30 m class and as the competitors entered the arena the excitement grew but John Higgins taking on the challenge took 1st place on ‘Emerald George’ with Laura Reid on ‘Nonavic Temara’ settling for 2nd place.

The SJI Spring Horse League continues next Saturday at 10.00 am classes 80 cm – 1.30 m and the SJI Spring Pony League commences on Sunday 3rd March at 10.00 am with all categories catered for, the schedule can be viewed in the SJI March Bulletin.

Training went ahead during the St. Valentine’s celebrations as horses and riders turned out to the training shows at Connell Hill. Lots of quality time was therefore spent with their horses during the evening taking advantage of this training exercise. The aim of the training league is to lead to a fitter horse providing a better performance and improve on ability and talent.

Horses noticeably benefiting from this at Connell Hill so far are Charlie ridden by Andrew McKinney and Loughview Lola, owned by Judith Sossick and ridden by Dean Bell who both had double clear rounds in the 80 cm class on Thursday night. Proving fitness training pays off as the 1.0 m class started with a double clear was Andrew McKinney on Charlie. Sammy Workman on Pendock Pride, Katy Connor on Freddie, Sarah Agnew on Hummer and Jenny Beattie on Danny also had double clear rounds. Thanks to the course builder, Will Crean, who had a most relaxing night as double clears in the 1.10 m class were Dawn McKeown on Tabby, Fergus Reid on Cosmo, Sarah Agnew on Liro, Barry McCormick on Ollie and Fergus Reid on Boomerang. The night ended with a double clear in the 1.20 class by Barry McCormick on Finbar.

It is great to see the enthusiasm of the younger riders who turn out each week and take such pride in their ponies as they jump at these training shows gaining confidence and improving their riding skills. Clear rounds in the 50 cm class were Cherie McHugh on Dixie, Jodie Creighton on Lucky and Sammy Cameron on Brownie. The 60 cm class double clear was Yasmin Boyle on her lovely pony Impi. Sammy Cameron on Brownie went double clear in the 70 cm class with Beth Boone on Angel and Jodie Creighton on Tabby both going double clear in the 80 cm class.
Judith Sossicks young horse Loughview Lola ridden by Dean Bell start the day with a clear in the 80 cm class. The 90 cm class clears were Louise Houston on her own Ballybrack Tom, Olivia McCormick on Nightlife, Claire Spillane-Pattison on Cor De La, Robert Newell on Roundthorn Delancy, Ashlee Ervine on Silver Tycoon and Suzanne Posnett on Magic Cuidam. As the fences went up for the 1.0 m class so did the standard, Julie Steele on her own Wellview Lenny jumped clear to start their season of show jumping. Zoe Woods who had two mounts Kilronan Chin and Without Permission jumped both double clears in the 1.10 m class. As the day wore on so did the rain but this did not dampen the spirit of the 1.20 m class which saw Liam McGarry on Javas Wild Child and Javas Georgie B both jump double clears. It all came down to seconds when the 1.30 m class got under way as Andrea Thompson on Damingo Van Hoet Dingenshof snatched first place in a time of 43.43 and Suzanne Posnett took second place on Cocos Madamoiselle in 43.65. Third place went to Robert Newell who rode Patricia Connon’s Wolma Roundthorn, fourth to Anne McCrea’s lovely mare Clagan Royale ridden by Martin McCloskey and fifth to Liam McGarry who rode Judy Murphy’s Javas Wild Child.
