Simon Scott’s Diva Day at Connell Hill Final

Saturday saw the grand final of the 5 Week May SJI Horse League, and what a final this was, Good stiff competition, Good tracks, Good weather and all with Good friends. This was most certainly a grand day in every sense of the word as the sun shone throughout the day allowing riders the opportunity of shedding their jackets. The princely tracks, designed by Mr Will Crean, were demanding yet forward captivating spectators with a full action packed day as horses and riders demonstrated their skills. The first challenge of the day, the 80 cm class, saw Connor Stewart, from Maagherafelt, take first place on his young horse ‘Derganagh Hill’ with Olivia McCormack, also from Magherafelt, dauntlessly jump double clear on the ‘Fearless Des Terdix’. Brian Smyth, from Newtownards, then took the eminence of first in the 90 cm class on ‘Iroko Quarry Diamond’ with Amy Black, from Moneymore, very deservedly taking second on ‘Lissangle Luxzavella’. The track then meticulously set for the 1.0 m class was one furnished with huge contention as riders awaited the opportunity of displaying their horsemanship skills in this luxurious arena. Applying these skills against the clock to promptly take first was Orla Diamond, from Culmore’ on ‘Dannys Diamond’ Simon Scott taking second on Stephen Lowrys’ ‘Curry Free’ and Lauren Fulton, from Cullybackey, a well earned third, on ‘Wicked Clover’. Double clears were also claimed by neighbours from Cookstown and Moneymore Jackie Short on ‘Utaki Balia’, Ryan Hunter on ‘Fivona G’ and Amy Black on ‘Lissangle Luxzavella’. The energetic 1.10 m class got under way which some very momentous moments as riders accelerated against the clock which saw Shannon MacKenzie, from Randalstown, snatch first on ‘Euroquay’, Tanya Smith, from Templepatrick, nip into second on ‘Kilmastulla Harlys Diamond’, Anne-Marie Hughes, from Killaloo’ third on ‘Ballyartan Blue Jay’, Orla Diamond, Culmore, on Dannys’ Diamond’ and Kathryn Watt, from Cullbackey, fifth on ‘Derg Bonnie Rose’. It was Captains day for the 1.20 m class as Claire O’Hara’, from Coleraine, took first on ‘Captain Oates’ and second on ‘Tiffcrum Penny’, Katy Connor jumped into third on Thomas McLeans’ ‘Balyrobin Nimmerdor’, Alistair Barr, from Antrim, shot into fourth on ‘Colt Forty Five’ and John Higgins, Magherafelt, took fifth on ‘In Luck’. The kaleidoscopic arena enhanced by the sun still shining was then made ready for the final class, the 1.30 m class which was controlled by Simon Scott as he exhibited his expertise winning first on, D L McConnells’, ‘Carnoneybridge Diva’ and second on ‘Carnoneybridge Sister Kate’.

Summer SJI Horse League commences on Thursday 5th June at 10.00 am, classes 80 cm – 1.30 m. Show Dates: Thursday 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th June, 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and Final on Thursday 31st July.

Training Shows will continue on Friday night, as jumping is outdoor this show will commence at 6.30 pm sharp, X-Poles – 1.0 m classes, where everyone will receive a warm welcome with café facilities for hot and cold drinks/snacks.

Jumping Derby Show on Sunday 8th June at 10.00 am for horses and ponies, classes 60 cm – 1.0 m.

4th July Celebrations at Connell Hill

Thursday 4th July, the fifth week of Connell Hill’s league, saw the return of riders and horses in immaculate turned out, ready to jump a professionally designed course of fences.

Spectators relaxed in the viewing gallery as they watched each horse jump with style and precision. The 80 cm class started the day off with Mary Hegarty on ‘Lady Cool Cruise’ and Caitlin O’Kane on ‘Castlenavan Dunoffee’ jump double clears. A successful day jumping double clears in the 90 cm class were Ian Moore on ‘Sarko’ and Femme Fatale’ and Clare Spillane-Pattison on ‘Little Task’ and Cor De La.

With competition growing there was no time for idle chat when the 1.0 m class started as Joan Adrain on ‘Chitchat’ jumped double clear. Stephen Grieve had loads to celebrate as he took first place on ‘Zaza B’ and second place on ‘Lucy Oliver’ when they went against the clock in the 1.10 m class and then going on to take the honours of first place in the 1.20 m class on ‘Zaza B’. Having a plan pays off as the 1.30 m class ended the day with Gwen Scott on ‘My Plan’ taking the red rosette and with only a whisker in it Lisa Mitchell-Talbot on ‘Kilcorig Belle’ taking the blue.

SJI Horse League continues on Thursday 11th, 18th July, final on Thursday 25th July, classes 80 cm – 1.30 m, starting at 10.00 am.

PLEASE NOTE NO Training Show for Horses and Ponies on Friday night, 12th July, but will continue the following Friday night, 19th July, at 6.30 pm, 50 cm – 1.10 m classes where everyone is welcome to come along and socialise with a hot snack, tea/coffee/soft drink from the cafe.
