At CLAS the animals are encouraged, where possible, to ‘earn their keep’ and following a comprehensive training period, some of our horses and dogs participate in educational workshops, and our Animals Helping People programs, working closely with individuals and groups from the community. A case of animals in need, helping people in need. The cost of running Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary is now £15,000 a month for the animal’s feed, bedding and veterinary care. We need your help to continue to provide a safe haven for the abandoned, neglected and forgotten animals of Northern Ireland. Over the past 12 months, Equine Welfare in Northern Ireland has reached crisis point and the number of calls for help has increased by 200%. The charity simply cannot cope with the increased workload and we desperately need financial help. We have launched our S.O.S appeal ( Sponsor Our Stables ) where we are asking private individuals and businesses to sponsor one of our stables for a donation each month/year. For just a small donation towards the cost of looking after the four legged occupant individuals can sponsor a stable for themselves, a friend or family member. We are also asking business’s to sponsor a stable and get some advertising space that will be on display to all of our visitors. Stable sponsorship costs £120 per annum for private individuals and families and we ask for a minimum of £240 for businesses with an additional £16 for a stable name plaque. This is a great alternative to sponsoring an individual sanctuary animal as sponsored animals may be fortunate enough to find a permanent home but their friends at CLAS still need your financial support.
Due to the demand for it’s Xmas ballot tickets and Xmas cards Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary,CLAS, will be opening it’s reception area on Sunday 8th Dec from 1-3pm to allow the public to come up to collect tickets and cards. All the proceeds will go towards the animal welfare charity’s Winter Feed fund. It will be a normal working day at the charity’s yard and visitors are advised to wear suitable footwear for the muddy outdoor conditions. If you can’t make it on Sunday ballot tickets and cards can be posted out if details are phoned or emailed to the sanctuary.

Unfortunately the charity will not be having a Xmas Open Day this year due to the effects of last months rain on the fields and grounds but volunteers are hoping that the public will get behind them and help raise much needed funds. Perhaps supporters could sell tickets and cards amongst friends and family or ask their local business’s to allow them to sell ballot tickets to their customers.

This year’s Xmas ballot tickets feature a little Shih Tzu called Lola whose story touched the hearts of so many people. Lola and her eight friends were rescued from squalid conditions. She had been locked inside a

cat carrier, her leg was badly broken and so caked in faeces that she could barely move. It was thought she was dead at first but volunteers saw her tail try to wag through her knotted filthy coat! Lola needed her coat carefully clipped off - the matted mess of a coat weighed more than she did. Lola’s feet and coat were caked in her own faeces; her nails were so overgrown they were embedded into her pads and one foot was oozing with pus. She had been left with a broken leg that had ‘healed’ in a terrible position and the vet had no choice but to amputate the mangled leg. Lola’s operation was a success and she is coping very well on three legs.

She required intensive nursing and lots of TLC, so she was fostered by one of Crosskennan’s volunteers – Debbie. After going through so much together, Lola and Debbie formed a very strong bond and Debbie and her family decided to keep her! What a happy ending for Lola – she is now being treated like a princess!

We want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has already donated towards the costs of caring for these little dogs and the many rescued horses in our care. We DESPERATELY need funds to help pay for their care and are making a heartfelt appeal to our supporters to PLEASE give what they can via this link:

Alternatively you can post a cheque or postal order to 26 Crosskennan Lane, Antrim, BT41 2QY

Thank you for your support.

After the success of last year’s CLAS Charity Abseil, the charity is organising another big adrenaline rush to raise funds. Crosskennan,CLAS, is now recruiting volunteers for the Crosskennan £5000 Drop and aim to raise £5000 which will go towards the cost of building a field shelter for the animal welfare charity’s ponies.

Pictured right: Heather Thompson, a Crosskennan volunteer from Ballynure, who took part in last year’s event.

Dates are available for the 2013 abseil in April, May, and June, so if you are interested get in touch with CLAS for more details .

Participants are asked to pay a registration fee of £30 to book a place and to raise sponsorship amongst family, friends, work colleagues, employers or clubs.

So if you are looking for a challenge and want to do something different, contact CLAS, Tel 028 9446 5384 or email crosskennan@hotmail.co.uk

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary, the first educational equine welfare charity to have been set up in N.Ireland, began as a response to an inadequate animal welfare system. Since being granted charitable status in 1996, it has brought equine welfare to the fore. It is committed to promoting awareness and knowledge of animal welfare issues throughout the province.

The charity is concerned with the rescue and rehabilitation of animals, in particular horses and ponies but also dogs, cats and chickens, that have been abused and neglected. At CLAS the animals are encouraged, wherever possible, to ‘earn their keep’ and following a comprehensive training period, many of our horses raise funds for those that are in need by participating in the Animals Helping People Programs, Animal Care Courses, Pony Parties, Own a Pony Experiences, Coffee Mornings & Afternoons and Community Events.
