One well known breeder, owner and producer is Desmond Gibson of Dromara who had perhaps the most successful day of all competitors at last years Castlewellan show. His broodmare Ballycapple Blackbird (Sire Ghareeb and dam Ballycapple Clover) won the following classes during Castlewellan 2013:

Brood Mare (Light Weight) to produce High Class Hunter. Due to foal in 2013 or with foal at foot.

The Castlewellan McSherry Perpetual Trophy Championship

TS Foods £150 Brood Mare Premium Class

Championship Sponsored by: MURDOCK SADDLERY, Drumbo

Half Bred Breeders Championship

The Irish Shows Association and West Cork Horse Breeders All Ireland Breeders Championship

On the same day, her foal at foot sired by Emperor Augustus won Class 24a – Non-Thoroughbred Colt Foal. (Progeny of mares in Class 24).

This year Dessie has two horses in search for a star young horse championship

A two year old by golden master. Lurgan show was first time in the ring and he made his mark winning his class and claiming reserve champion. Castlewellan will be his second time in show ring and we can’t wait to see how he does.

Dessie also plans to bring his three year old who was reserve champion at Balmoral earlier this year and second last week at Bannow and Rathangan three year old all Ireland Championship. Glountane Premier was champ young horse at castlewellan last year.

Dessie commented that he was looking forward to Castlewellan as it is an ideal show with regards to setting and timing to prepare his two year old before Dublin.

Lillian Graham won the minature horse championship with Ballygowan Sweetheart in 2012 and 2013 and has entered once again for the 2014 show this Saturday.

Kellee Graham, Lillian’s daughter bought Ballygowan Sweetheart in 2011 and began her showing career in 2012 as a 2 year old. Since then, she has been unbeaten and they are very grateful to have enjoyed such positive seasons with the mare.

Ballygowan Sweetheart is sired by a stallion owned by Lillian until a short while ago when he passed away. The stallion Shadow Clay Epsom Downs was bought from England to further the breed and the dam Ennis Modena has also enjoyed a prolific career herself qualifying for HOYS as a yearling and 2 year old.

Accompanying Ballygowan Sweetheart for the day will be her half brother who is by an American stallion Golden Oak Moonlit Reflection. Both minature horses are registered with British Minature Society .

The Graham family are looking forward to this years show where they hope to see this discipline develop further to enjoy a wider range of minatures taking part, as in previous years, Falabella and American breeding have also joined the scene.

From over 15 years, Castlewellan show have been leading the way with minature classes nurturing this showing discipline and giving local producers a top class show to prepare for on their doorstep.

The events team at Equestrian News NI are looking forward to the show on Saturday and we hope to have lots of results and photographs online throughout the day to keep everyone up to date.

The show is planned for 13th July and includes lots of classes whatever your equine!

Special support has been given for a number of classes this year including the Coolmore sponsored “Search for A Young Horse Championship.”

This class received a lot of attention last year with Mr Desmond Gibson claiming top prizes and even a spot on our Equestrian News NI calendar for the month of June!

The Baileys Filly Championship is also expected to be hotly contested so make sure you get down to watch, if you don’t have a suitable filly to enter.

Burrendale Hotel are sponsoring the extremely popular Open Working Hunter Championship and entries are coming in thick and fast to claim this prestigious title.

P Turley & Sons are sponsors of the Champion Ridden Hunter, these rings are expected to be packed full of entries all day so make sure you get your entry in to be included in this special competition.

Mount Pleasant Champion Irish Draught is also expected to be well supported, so please allow time to watch this class on the day.

Red Mill Working and In Hand Pony classes are hoped to be as popular as ever at this years show, so we would urge you to get your entries in on time to be included in this wonderful occasion.

All classes have to be entered by June 19th, however we heard a whisper that there might be a little flexibility for those entries still in the post making their way to the saintfield show secretary, so if you haven’t entered yet – get your entry in today and you might just get to enjoy this fabulous show with your equine partner!

Should you miss the deadline, there is Unaffiliated Jumping with Mossvale Riding Club with entries on the day, including their ever popular Show Jumper of the Year competition which will be held in the afternoon.

Castlewellan Agricultural Show is delighted that the internationally renowned Coolmore stud farm is this year’s sponsor for our Search for A Star Young Horse Championship. Coolmore is owned by one of Ireland’s most successful entrepreneurs John Magnier and occupies over 7500 acres across Tipperary and Cork. Stabling horses at stud who are Derby and National Hunt champions as well as many with prestigious wins across Europe, the US, Australia and the Middle East, it also includes the nearby Ballydoyle Racing Stable, where numerous winners have been trained under the watchful eye of Aidan O’Brien.

Members of the Castlewellan Agricultural Show committee travelled down for the launch and were given and informative tour by Gerry Ahern taking them through all the aspects of breeding and the care and attention that is required. Speaking on behalf of the Coolmore Group, Gerry welcomed the partnership “Castlewellan Show has over forty years of showcasing equestrian classes and attracts a high standard of entrants. We are delighted to be associated with this long running Agricultural Show”.
The day’s highlight was meeting and being photographed with Galileo, a winner of the Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. This handsome bay which stands at over 16 hands was sired by the legendary Sadler’s Wells and has himself sired over 100 stakes winners, commanding a €300,000 covering fee.

Committee members also met two of the other 25 stallions which stand at the stud, Duke of Marmalade & Fastnet Rock as well as visiting the foals. “Chairperson, Michelle McCauley extolled the commitment of Coolmore “Listening to Gerry as a sheep and cattle pedigree breeder myself, I understood everything they were trying to do in terms of quality and standards – breeding is a gamble, an expensive roll of the dice but you keep hoping that every so often the right combination could produce you a winner”.

The Coolmore – Search for A Star Young Horse Championship takes place on Saturday 13th July and is open to 1 year old colt/gelding or filly; 2 year old colt/gelding or filly; 3 year old colt/gelding or filly with a prize fund of £2000. Qualifying rounds will take place at Shows across the island. David Lyons from the horse committee commented “The Search for A Star Young Horse Championship” was a great success when we ran it for the first time last year, it is fantastic that we have secured such notable sponsorship to retain it as a class”.
Castlewellan Show launches on 18th April and details of all classes will be available then.
