The Indoor Pony Show held at Kernan Equestrian Centre on Saturday 19th September was part of the SJI Ulster Region BLUEGRASS Autumn Pony Tour. A very busy day ensued with 220 entries in all.

The main competitions were the three Grand Prix events. First was the 128 1m Grand Prix, only one of the six 128cm classes, which was kindly sponsored by the Linen Green Shopping Centre. First and second place were taken by Alex Finney riding Ballknock Master Roan and Some Journey respectively. Third place went to Max Foley on Sparkle. Another exciting class in the 128cm section was the Under 10Years 85cm class when two riders finished on exactly the same times. Maeve Clarke on Lenamore Mini Metro sped around but not to be outdone , last to go was Charles Heffron on Ballykett Highlander who matched her time of 23.35secs to the second. Third place went to Lucy Morton on Tynan Petal.

The next Grand Prix event was the 138 1.10m. The 138cm classes were sponsored by Douglas Sport Horses of Aughnacloy and Walter and Jane Russell. Seven combinations successfully completed double clear rounds over course designer’s Alan Lynch’s challenging course. But it was Aisling McGuinness’s fast time of 24.10secs who emerged victorious on Cider Girl. Hot on her heels in second place was Jason Foley on Ferrybank Roy in a time of 24.54 secs. Third went to Ruari Clarke on Gaulstown Lady Bishop who finished on a time of 25.83secs.

Last Grand Prix event of the day, the 148 1.20m Grand Prix was sponsored by McCaughey Foods of Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan who kindly sponsored all 148cm classes. Although seven competitors achieved double clear rounds it was Tyrone Flanagan on Talyas Diamond Link whose time of 26.40secs narrowly beat Jason Foley and Lyncot Fancy Pant’s time of 26.63secs leaving Jason to take second place and Tyrone the coveted first place. Regulars at Kernans, Carl Webb on Future Lady was placed third in a time of 28.30secs. Kernan Equestrian Centre wish to extend their sincere thanks to all their sponsors and all those taking part in the day’s competition helping to make this a very successful fixture in the pony calendar. We also want to extend our appreciation to course designer Alan Lynch whose excellent courses proved challenging but produced good results.

The eagerly awaited main event of the day, the BLUEGRASS 1.35m £1,000 event attracted 32 entries. Out of the eight combinations to go through to the jumpoff only three of these managed double clear rounds. One of these was first in Sean Kavanagh on The Kingdom. Sean went clear in a time of 49.49secs but his time was soon bettered by host James Kernan and Premier Sport ‘s time of 44.34secs. Liam McGarry on local woman’s Judy Murphy’s Javas Georgie B soon put paid to James hopes by producing another lovely clear round in an excellent time of 41.37secs taking the coveted red rosette. Liam was also 4th on Judy’s Javas Heartbreaker. Both Liam McGarry and Sean Kavanagh appeared in the winner’s lineup several times during the day. All agreed that international course designer Tom Holden’s tricky but excellent course produced the desired result.

Due to a large turnout of horses the start time for the Ponies has been put back to 2pm. The horses start time remains the same at 10am.
Glorious sunshine brought the Bluegrass Spring Pony Series outdoors last weekend with a superb track by course designing supremo Will Crean, which proved to be both inviting and testing as the series reached the half way point in the competition.

With its usual hub of excitement, the Connell Hill leg of the Bluegrass Under 10s delivered some more edge-of-the-seat action and heart-stopping thrills with Lewis Trenier and ‘Trendy Taz’ taking the honours this week in a time of 25:86, and series leaders Yiayan Evans and ‘Princess Judy’ taking second place points in a time of 26:33 with Katie McEntee and ‘Super Sonic’ finishing in third with 26:45.

The hotly contested Bluegrass 128 1:05 class saw Natasha Kerr and ‘The Nut Cracker’ deliver an impressive round which kept her in top spot in a time of 28:20 with John McEntee and ‘Lurgan Daragh’ finishing second with 29:64. Trudie McCoosh and ‘Rotherwood Dinky Toy’ finished third in a time of 31:70 and Victoria Thompson and ‘Sparkling Mr Tigger’ finished fourth with 33:06.

Proving a winning combination of Bluegrass pony power, the Bluegrass fed ‘Beautiful Mystery’ performed another superbly fast clear round keeping Ella Grant at the top of the Bluegrass series, once again stamping their mark in the Connell Hill Bluegrass 138 1:15cm in a time of 38:31 beating her nearest rival by a whopping two seconds, with Emma McEntee and ‘Hubba Bubba’ finishing second in a time of 40:16 and Elle Johnston and ‘Dun N Dust It’ finishing third with the fastest four faults in a speedy round of 34:98.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-547655" alt="1st prizewinner in the 128 cm Under 10Yrs Lewis Trenier from Cavan and Trendy Taz. Presentation by James Kernan.

Action kicked off in the 148 1:10 with Nicholas Farr and ‘Cwmdwyfran Noson Dywyll’ claiming a One-Two in a time of 32:85 and ‘Double Trouble’ in second spot with 37:75, Emma McEntee and ‘Tirconaill Bluebell’ rode with her usual style and finesse to finish third in a time of 39:14.

In the Bluegrass 148 6&7yold 1:10 Cookstown girl Emily Slaine and ‘Lottos Dream’ proved it really is all about what you have in the tank as the Bluegrass fed ‘Lottos Dream’ snatched top spot to put the duo at the top of the Bluegrass Leader board. Sophie Truesdale and ‘Beech Hall’ put in a superb performance to finish in second place.

James Houston made an instant splash at his first outing of the Bluegrass 148 1:25cm on his mum Joanne Houston’s ‘Blessington Grange Mist’ with a super smooth and stylish round to take the spoils in Connell Hill. James has recently taken over the ride of ‘Blessington Grange Mist’ from his sister Rachel who had a phenomenal record both nationally and internationally with the pony. Emma McEntee and ‘Tirconaill Bluebell’ finished in second with Ciara Collins and ‘Ryans Mystery’ taking third and Trudie McCoosh and ‘Malstone Murphy’ bringing home fourth place points in the series.

In the Connell Hill Bluegrass Children On Horses class Amy Roberts and ‘Cache D’or’ performed a beautiful double clear taking the spoils in Connell Hill leaving them in second place on the Bluegrass series behind Abby Morton and ‘Patch Mills Laura’.

Sunday saw the Bluegrass series move to Kernan Equestrian Centre in Crosmaglen and a second day of glorious sunshine kept the series outdoors. The Alistair Megahey tracks were masterfully built asking some serious questions of the combinations and made for some super competition on the day.

As the crowd held their breath, watching in anticipation the stage was set for the Kernan’s Bluegrass 128 Under 10s showdown. Lewis Trenier and ‘Trendy Taz’, whose determination and dedication resulted in a back to back win for the duo snatched the class in style in a time of 42:62 with Emma-Jane Orr and ‘Badbury Blackthorn’ hot on his heels with 43:15 and Yiayan Evans and ‘Princess Judy’ finishing in fifth with a pole on the ground in a time of 49:83. Lewis Trenier and ‘Trendy Taz’ now take the top spot on the Bluegrass series leader board with Yiayan Evans and ‘Princess Judy’ in second as the series moves to Cavan.

In a day of Déjà vu wins Natasha Kerr and ‘The Nut Cracker’ rode once again with her usual style and finesse to land the honours in the Kernan’s Bluegrass 128 1:05 in a time of 35:09 with John McEntee and ‘Star Spangled Banner’ finishing second in a time of 42:71 and Hugo McAlpine and ‘Twilight Dancer’ taking third spot with 49:09. Just one point separates Bluegrass series leaders Trudie McCoosh and ‘Rotherwood Dinky Toy’ and Natasha Kerr and ‘The Nut Cracker’ as we approach the next round in Cavan.
Hot on the heels of Bluegrass 138 1:15 series leader Ella Grant and ‘Beautiful Mystery’, Eve Donnelly and ‘Kiltormer Dan’ stamped their mark on the series over a mighty track to take honours in Kernans in a time of 44:88 gaining her a third place spot on the Bluegrass leader board with two more rounds to come. James Houston and ‘Woodfield Superstar’ finished second in the class in a time of 46:32 leaving Emma McEntee and ‘Hubba Bubba’ in third. Elle Johnston and ‘Dun N Dust It’ added fourth place points to their Bluegrass series tally leaving them in second place in the standings, just five points behind the series leaders.

Kernan’s attracted a super field of 148 6&7 yolds with Abby Morton aboard ‘Moonlit Connaght’ taking the Bluegrass 148 6&7yold class honours in a time of 39:35 and Ellen Hughes and ‘Hello Friend finishing second with 41:36.

James Houston delivered another faultless performance, claiming back-to back success with ‘Blessington Grange Mist’ in a time of 47:32 in the Kernan Equestrian Bluegrass 148 1:25 with Emma McEntee and ‘Tirconaill Bluebell’ finishing second in a time of 50:04. Abby Morton and ‘Tynan Bo-Bo Bear’ known for their speedy rounds finished third in 37:37 with one pole on the ground leaving Ellen Hughes and ‘Hello Friend’ with fourth place points. Abby Morton and ‘Tynan Bo-Bo Bear’ still hold on to the top-spot in the Bluegrass 148 1:25 leader board with Ciara Collins and ‘Ryan’s Mystery’ in second and new kid on the block in the series James Houston turning up the heat in a comfortable third place with ‘Blessington Grange Mist’.

Abby Morton and ‘Patch Mills Laura’ added another 15points to their tally in the Kernan Equestrian Bluegrass Children On Horses class with a perfectly executed round claiming her fifth victory in the Bluegrass series so far. Abby heads the leader board as we move to Cavan with Amy Roberts and ‘Cache D’or’ in second spot.

As the series moves to Cavan for the Easter Three-Day-Pony-Show there’s a whole weekend of Bluegrass action with some corking rounds of super show jumping still to come as the competition hots up.

With 2012 and all the weather problems associated with it behind us everyone is now looking forward to the competition season ahead. This is certainly the case at Ravensdale Lodge where a packed schedule of all the usual events and a few new ones await in the weeks and months to come. Last year may have proved very difficult for scheduling events due to the foul weather however the superb all weather facilities at Ravensdale Lodge meant that all competitions ran as scheduled. The new outdoor fibre sand, all weather grass and in particular indoor arenas proved their worth in 2012 and it is indoors that the new season begins on January 24th with four weeks of indoor horse training shows which have a start time of 11am. These shows are being used as a build up to the O’ Reilly Wholesalers Newry sponsored HSI / Bluegrass Spring Tour Grand Prix on Sunday 17th February and the Crowne Plaza Dundalk sponsored SJI registered horse & pony league which commences on Thursday 21st February and runs weekly to 25th April. The centre is sticking with the same format which has worked so well over the past few seasons of horse & pony training on Friday evening, indoor arena eventing on Saturday afternoon and dressage on Sunday afternoon. Once again competitors are guaranteed some fantastic prizes as all leagues are sponsored with Horseware Ireland kindly slotting into their regular Friday evening spring indoor horse & pony training league which starts Friday 25th January running to 26th April with usual classes from X poles to 1.10m and a start time of 5pm. Mackins Horse Feeds Newry sponsor the spring indoor arena eventing league once again and there will be some well fed animals with bags of feed being put up for each class over the course of the league which starts on Saturday 26th January and runs to 27th April with a start time of 3pm and usual classes of 60cm, 70cm, 85cm & 1m. The Cemac Group are new sponsors at Ravensdale Lodge and they take the mantle of the spring indoor dressage league which commences Sunday 27th January and runs to 28th April, classes can be found on the Ravensdale Lodge website and this competition has a start time of 3pm.

In addition to good sporting fun, many competitors have found the schedules at Ravensdale Lodge ideal as preparation for larger events and training for young horses and the addition of a combined training league this spring will tick all the boxes for many people. A simple concept where points from the Horseware Ireland indoor horse & pony training league on Friday evening, the Mackins Horse Feeds indoor arena eventing league on Saturday and the Cemac Group’s indoor dressage league on Sunday will be added for anyone who competes in one or more of the leagues from Friday 25th January to Sunday 28th April. There will be four individual classes, 60cm / any dressage test, 70cm / any dressage test, 80 or 90cm / any dressage test and 1m or 1.10m / any dressage test with an outright league winner for each division. There is further good news for competitors as 2012 prices will hold the same for all spring leagues. Further details of all, shows, events and league rules can be found on the Ravensdale Lodge website, www.ravensdalelodge.com or from the office on + 353 (0) 42 9371034, + 353 (0) 87 2306603 or email info@ravensdalelodge.com
