IRISH teenage show jumping sensation Bertram Allen has today (Thursday) broken through into the top five of the world’s best riders, according to the official Longines FEI Jumping rankings just published for the month of May.

Written by Colin McClelland

Wexford-born Allen originally cracked the top 20 late last year when a string of superlative performances brought him in at number 17.

Since then the 19 year-old’s progress has been almost unstoppable, with victories and top five placings in the sport’s premier competitions adding valuable points to his total, allowing him to overtake many of the world’s most experienced riders and achieve the number five spot in the rankings for the first time.

Ireland now has nine riders placed in the world top 100, with Allen at number five, Denis Lynch at number 28, Darragh Kenny at number 37, Conor Swail at number 51, Shane Sweetnam in equal 71st, Cameron Hanley at equal 77th, Shane Breen in 88th, Kevin Babington at number 90, and Billy Twomey in 94th place.

Current leader in the Longines World Show Jumping rankings is Britain’s Scott Brash, with Germany’s Daniel Deusser in second place, the USA’s Kent Farrington in third, and Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat in fourth place.

The rankings are published by the world governing body for the sport, the FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Over 2,000 international riders are monitored each month, and points are awarded for top performances at major shows.

IN HIS first ever World Cup Final, Wexford’s 19 year-old Bertram Allen was third overall at Las Vegas tonight (Sunday) in one of the tightest finishing scores ever seen in the famous competition.

Written by Colin McClelland

Starting with one penalty point on his card this evening, Allen and the 11 year-old grey mare Molly Malone had a single fence down to complete the first round on five penalties, equal second with France’s Penelope Leprevost and Vagabond de la Pomme. Swiss Olympic champion Steve Guerdat with Albfuehren’s Paille had started on a zero score and finished with no penalties, to maintain his World Cup lead.

In the second round, featuring the top 20 riders, Allen and Leprevost each had a fence down, both now with nine penalties, which left Guerdat with two fences in hand. In the last jumping round of the Finals, the Swiss rider managed to dislodge two poles, leaving him on a total of eight penalty points, thereby winning the championship by a single point.

Allen and Leprevost tied on nine penalties apiece, but as the Frenchwoman’s time was just half a second faster than Allen’s she claimed second place, with the Irish teenager in third, equalling Eddie Macken’s World Cup finish in the 1979 World Cup Final.

Allen’s remarkable achievement will not only earn him World Ranking points (he was 10th in the world before this weekend) but also garner him valuable Olympic individual qualification points.

Irish show jumping manager Robert Splaine said from Las Vegas after the competition: “This was a remarkable achievement in a world championship for a 19 year-old. Taking this third place was an incredible performance and is great for our sport . Bertram himself is a wonderful ambassador for Ireland.”

Ireland has never won the World Cup, with Jessica Kurten coming second in Kuala Lumpur in 2006 on board Castle Forbes Libertina, and Trevor Coyle also taking the runner-up spot in the final at Gothenburg in Sweden in 1999 with the legendary Irish Sport Horse Cruising. Eddie Macken achieved third place at the inaugural World Cup Final in 1979 with Carrolls of Dundalk, also in Gothenburg.

Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat was a happy man when claiming the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2015 title at the Thomas & Mack arena in Las Vegas, USA today. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment!”, said the 32-year-old Olympic champion whose last-to-go ride was an absolute thriller.

Written by by Louise Parkes

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/a5wz55gI42M” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>

He came into today’s drama-filled final competition sharing the lead with America’s Rich Fellers, but it was French rider Penelope Leprevost who lined up second at the end of the day, while 19-year-old Irish talent, Bertram Allen finished third.

“I’ve been trying a long time to win this and I’ve come close many times. It’s the third time I was in the lead going into the final competition, and today I nearly messed it up again! Coming to the last I was riding more like a cow-horse rider”, Guerdat said afterwards. “I’m so happy, I feel blessed!”

Six clear rounds

With riders going in reverse order of merit, there were only six clears from a start-list of 29 over another tough course from Anthony D’Ambrosio in the first round today. The vertical at fence nine claimed a number of victims but there were also plenty of faults posted later on the track, with horses beginning to fade after three days of demanding jumping.

One of the features of the 2015 Final has been the remarkable performances of the younger generation, and it was 24-year-old Douglas Lindelow from Sweden, lying 12th with Casello, who was first to leave all the poles in place. The Netherlands’ Maikel van der Vleuten and VDL Groep Verdi immediately followed suit and when America’s Beezie Madden (Simon) and Belgium’s Jos Verlooy (Domino), who each carried six penalty points into the last day, were also fault-free, they shot up the leaderboard, while Penelope Leprevost (Vagabond de la Pomme) carrying five penalties, put the pressure on the top three when also foot-perfect .

Bertram Allen and Molly Malone were just one penalty point behind the leaders as the day began, but they began to look vulnerable when the massive 1.75m-wide oxer at fence five hit the floor. And when Guerdat jumped clear, but joint-leader Fellers had two fences down, the Swiss star went into the second round still on a clean sheet. With Leprevost and Allen now lying joint-second with five faults apiece, he had a fence in hand as the second round began. But things didn’t go quite to plan for the eventual champion this time out.

Faulted once more

Both Leprevost and Allen faulted once more to put them on a nine-fault final total, and it seemed the Longines 2015 title must surely already be in Guerdat’s grasp. But the crowd gripped their seats and gasped when his chestnut mare, Albfuehren’s Paille, hit the first element of the double at five. And then it almost completely unravelled for the Swiss star on the turn to the last.

“I don’t really want to think about it!” he said afterwards. “I didn’t expect the first mistake, those four strides (from fence 4 to 5a) turned out to be very, very long, and that triple combination wasn’t good for me at all, but once we were past that I thought now stay calm. But coming to the last I knew the time was tight. I could hear Martin Fuchs outside the arena saying “go, go!” and I don’t know what I did. I just went as fast as I could to the finish line, but unfortunately there was a big fence in the way!” he said with a laugh.

The last fence indeed hit the floor with crash, and it was only his ferocious gallop to get through the beam inside the 68 seconds time-allowed that saved the day. If he had added a single time fault to the eight fence penalties he had just collected, would have been forced into a three-way jump-off against Leprevost and Allen. And he has endured too many unsuccessful FEI World Cup™ Final jump-offs before to make that an enticing prospect.

Leprevost’s faster time of 65.30 with Vagabond de la Pomme secured runner-up spot while Allen had to settle for third when a half-second slower.

A real fighter

Guerdat described his winning ride, Albfuehren’s Paille, as “a real fighter, today a lot of horses were really struggling but every time she sees a fence she wants to jump it, no matter what.”

Today’s victory is particularly sweet for the new champion. “I’ve been three-times on the podium, twice in the jump-off and always finished in the top 10. I always wanted to win this”, Guerdat said. Talking about his determination to eventually succeed, having competed at 10 finals, he said, “I have good people around me who keep me calm and confident and keep me going. You need a little bit of luck, you have to keep believing in yourself and your horse and if you come so close so many times you deserve to win it one time!”

Bertram Allen IRL commented- “In the first round I made a mistake but felt she (Molly Malone) jumped quite good, but the second round was a bad round – I got much too close to fence two. But I’m very happy to be here. I’ve had a great week and feel honoured to be sitting up her with these riders at this young age.”

Result: 1, Steve Guerdat SUI 8; 2, Penelope Leprevost FRA 9/65.30; 3, Bertram Allen IRL 9/65.87; 4, Beezie Madden USA 10/65.78; 5, Jos Verlooy BEL 10/67.34; 6, Maikel van der Vleuten NED 12; 7, Rich Fellers USA 16/67.70; 8, Douglas Lindelow SWE 18; 9, Lucy Davis USA 19; 10, Jur Vrieling NED 20.

THOUGH recording the fastest time in the Olympia World Cup jump-off on Sunday, Ireland’s Bertram Allen fell foul of the vertical bogey fence that had caught out so many in the final round in London, and finished seventh overall.

Second last to go of 13 clear rounds, the Wexford teenager made a spirited attempt to beat the time of the competition’s leader Marco Kutscher and Cornet’s Cristallo, and though he was almost a second quicker than the German rider, Allen and Molly Malone V had to settle for seventh when the vertical fence went down.

The 19 year-old was fastest of the six combinations that incurred four jump-off faults on Irishman Alan Wade’s tricky course, and his seventh place added a further 3,735 euro to his substantial weekend prize money.

Alan Wade said after the event: “Every night in the 1.50m classes we had plenty of clear rounds, so I knew they were jumping well. In the jump-off today I thought my countryman (Bertram Allen) could win. We put up the fences in the jump-off. We believe to keep the standard. We know they’re capable of going fast, but don’t want them to go flat out every day, we want jumpers to win, as well as fast jumpers”.

Allen is now holding eighth place with 34 points in the Longines 2014/2015 Western European World Cup league after seven competitions. The current leader is Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat on 57 points.

The 19 year-old Wexford rider this afternoon (Saturday) piloted Billy Twomey’s bay stallion Aminko N to victory in the Christmas Masters competition, adding a further 13,000 euro to his Olympia prize money.

The Masters competition sees riders take on an initial round followed by four jump-offs over a total of six fences, with the height of individual fences being raised in each round, to a maximum of 1m50.

In today’s Masters, Allen came out on top after being the only competitor from a field of seven to leave all the poles up after the fourth jump-off, with Belgium’s Jos Verlooy and Golden Horta runner-up on four faults.

Allen previously won the Speed Stakes at Olympia on Friday night with Wild Thing L.

Team RED MILLS show jumping rider Bertram Allen and the seven-year-old mare Barnike, have become the first combination in history to score back-to-back wins in at the FEI World Breeding Jumping Championships for Young Horses 2014 at Lanaken in Belgium.

Having landed the gold medal in 2013, Bertram Allen and the daughter of Baldwin B, returned to Lanaken again this year to record a spectacular repeat gold-medal winning performance at the home of the Zangersheide Stud.

A massive 236 starters began the competition on Thursday with the top 32 going through to Sunday’s final over a tough 1m45 course. Ten combinations managed to jump clear in the opening round but the jump-off saw just one double clear round, with 19 year-old Bertram Allen from Co Wexford beating off a host of the worlds top riders to land the coveted World Breeding Championships Gold medal with Barnike, who was representing the Dutch Ridinghorse and Pony Studbook,

Speaking afterward’s, Bertram Allen whose entire string of horses at his base in Germany are fed on Connolly’s RED MILLS feed said,

“We did a few shows after Lanaken and they went well, but then she (Barnike) had a long rest of three or four months before starting again, and it took longer to bring her back this time. She was too fresh at first, but eventually she improved. I wasn’t expecting to win when I brought her here this time though!” Allen said.

“I took risks and the mare jumped even better against the clock – I think she likes to run!” he added.

Earlier this year Bertram Allen won the coveted Longines Grand Prix of Dublin with Molly Malone V before going on to finish seventh individually at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy.

The Team RED MILLS Show Jumping squad also includes Edwina Tops Alexander, Shane and Trevor Breen, Denis Lynch, Billy Twomey, Dermott Lennon and Nicola Fitzgibbon.

In a sensational start to the Jumping Championships at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy today, Ireland’s teenage star Bertram Allen won the opening speed leg with a brilliant performance from Molly Malone V. The 19-year-old, who hails from County Wexford, but who is based in Munster, Germany and is coached by German ace Marcus Ehning, set a super-fast target when 40th to go in the field of 153 starters. And despite their best efforts, the world’s leading riders simply couldn’t match the time achieved by the young Irishman and his lovely grey mare.

Written by By Louise Parkes

French rider Patrice Delaveau lined up second with Orient Express HDC, securing pole position for the host country in the team rankings going into tomorrow’s second test, while Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet and Conrad de Hus finished third ahead of America’s Beezie Madden on Cortes C. Click here for an audio clip with Patrice Delaveau provided courtesy of FEI

The top-10 after today’s opening competition reads like a “who’s who” of the sport, with 2011 FEI European champion Rolf-Goran Bengtsson (SWE) filling fifth with Casall Ask, world number 9 Penelope Leprevost from France in sixth with Flora de Mariposa, and this year’s Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping champions, Daniel Deusser and Cornet D’Amour from Germany, slotting into seventh place.

Lying eighth individually is Canadian phenomenon and 10-time Olympian Ian Millar who, at 67 years of age, is almost 50 years older than today’s winner. The man affectionately and respectfully knows as “Captain Canada” cruised into the top-10 line-up with consummate ease riding the 11-year-old Dixon, a horse with a pedigree connected to his legendary partner Big Ben.

Lying ninth is Sweden’s Peder Fredricson, team silver medallist at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, while The Netherlands’ Jeroen Dubbeldam, individual champion at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, is well placed in 10th.

First clear round

Irishman Darragh Kenny produced the first clear over Frederic Cottier’s course when second into the arena with Imothep. But the 14-fence track would prove a significant test, with many horses more than impressed by the Norman theme that included a model of Mont St Michel, a herd of sheep grazing in a meadow, cartloads of fresh apples and even a bottle of French wine that adorned the space between the optional elements of the double at fence eight. This proved a pivotal point on the course, with a number of refusals and falls.

In total, 10 horse-and-rider combinations failed to make it around the track, which began with an oxer followed by a line of vertical to oxer to oxer before a bending line to a most unusual wall. Its rock-like face came as something of a surprise to many horses, as did the river-filler below the following oxer which led on to the open 3.80m open water.

The majority of riders selected the right-side faster route over the double of planks at fence eight instead of the poles to the left. Next was a vertical going away from the in-gate, and a stop and fall here for Brazil’s Doda de Miranda when AD Rahmannshof’s Bogeno ducked out to the left, drew gasps of disbelief from the crowd.

A double, vertical to oxer, at 10 was followed on a left-circle by a narrow oxer at 11 and this too took its toll when riders were attempting to make up time towards the end of the track with four seconds added for every fence on the floor. The narrow vertical at 12 then led to the final line of a double, oxer to vertical, and a final oxer.

More than 50 horses took their turn before Delaveau came closest to Allen’s time, and there were only 13 left to run when Wathelet moved into third while Madden clinched her fourth-place finish when second-last into the ring.

Rising star

Allen’s ride was perfection, but there was still a lot of head-shaking at the end of the day because, although his star has been rising for quite some time, his appearance at the top of the individual order at the end of this first world championship contest was generally unexpected. Except by the Irish who have been watching this extraordinarily talented young man making his way through the sport for a number of years now.

Despite his tender years he has a lot of experience under his belt, and his form in recent months includes a brilliant victory in the Longines Grand Prix at Dublin Horse Show just a few weeks ago. And of course he’d given warning of his intent when consistently successful at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 test event earlier in the summer.

Talking about his winning ride today he said: “the mare jumped out of her skin. The plan was a good solid round, but she took everything in her stride and we were able to get a great round in, so I’m over the moon! She has quite a bit of experience of going fast against the clock and we know each other well, so we know what we can and can’t do, and we got the measure right today.”

And talking about the course he said: “the water down to the planks was the most difficult part, but in fairness the course is very good. There are five or six little things that are causing an equal amount of problem, not one fence.”

Click here for an audio clip provided courtesy of FEI with Bertram Allen

Biggest stage

“This is the biggest stage I’ve ever performed on, and it’s a completely different level again, but I’ve had quite a bit of experience with under-age championships for ponies and juniors and I was reserve in Barcelona last year (at Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping 2013 Final).”

Asked if it is true that he has taken a medal at every championship in which he has competed so far he replied, “yes, I don’t know how I managed that! I suppose there was a bit of luck along the way. It would be great if the luck could keep going for one more Championship!” he replied with a laugh. And could he make it into Sunday’s final-four individual medal decider? “Sure that’s what I’m dreaming about,” he said, “but it’s a long, long way away!”

Like every other nation fielding a team this week, Olympic qualification is a major goal, and with clears from all of Allen’s fellow team-members the Irish are lying just two places off the top five slots which will pave the way to Rio 2016 when the team medals are distributed on Thursday. But the French are feeling pretty confident in the overnight lead, even though only a single fence separates the top six nations going into tomorrow’s second challenge.

The French are closely followed by Sweden in second, the USA in third, Germany in fourth, Netherlands in fifth and Canada in sixth.

Patrice Delaveau wasn’t getting too carried away either this evening. “I think we have the lead for the team ranking, but nothing is done, we must stay focused. However this result is good for us psychologically as we move forward into the week.”

What lies ahead

Course designer, Frederic Cottier talked about the challenge he faced today and what lies ahead. “I had to create a course for 160 horse-and-rider combinations at different levels, and I didn’t want the less experienced ones to lose confidence too early, so I created free turns so the best horses could make tight turns, but there was freedom for the riders to make their own decisions. But tomorrow will be very different.”

Ian Millar put the rest of the week into perspective when he said today “there’s 180 or whatever horse and rider combinations here and pretty much all of them are pretty good, and they have good horses. When you look at that then it’s a daunting task, and you just think this is a mountain we’ve gotta climb here and I believe that’s what championships are all about, and that’s why it brings out the very best in everybody.”

A total of 150 horse-and-rider combinations go through to tomorrow’s first round of the team final competition, which is also the second individual qualifier, and it is Portugal’s Mario Wilson Fernandes and Zurito do Belmonte who will be first into the arena.

All teams go into tomorrow’s competition, but only the top 10 will qualify for Thursday’s second round of the team final, so it’s critical from the outset when the action resumes in the D’Ornano Stadium tomorrow morning.

Tension mounted in the main arena when Allen and Ballywalter Farms’s grey mare Molly Malone V became the only Irish combination to make it through to the eight horse jump-off, and though they subsequently set the fastest time of the final round, the home crowd was on edge as last man in, the celebrated Canadian rider Ian Millar and his 11 year-old gelding Dixson attempted to snatch the Longines trophy with a swifter finish.

However, not only did Millar and Dixson fail to match Allen’s time, they also had one fence down for four faults, relegating them to sixth overall.

A delighted Bertram Allen, who had shown form earlier this week with his clear round in the Aga Khan Trophy, also with Molly Malone, picked up the winner’s cheque of 66,000 euro.

The runner-up prize of 40,000 euro went to the USA’s Kent Farrington and the 13 year-old gelding Uceko, while France’s Timothée Anciaume with Padock du Plessis*Hn received 25,000 euro for third place.

Ireland’s Thomas Ryan placed tenth in the Grand Prix aboard the grey gelding Caribo, being the fastest of the first round four-faulters.

Forty international riders and horses took part in the competition, which was the last international class of this year’s Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show.
