Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) launched a bursary on November 6th, which will be awarded to a student studying Equine Management at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) Enniskillen campus. The £1000 bursary, which will be linked to an assignment to produce a short video aimed at encouraging more young people to get involved in the racing industry, is open to second year students on the Honours Degree programme.

HRI was represented at the launch by Group Human Resource Manager David Wright and General Manager of Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Elaine Hatton.

The bursary will be paid in two instalments: 50% in February and 50% following the successful completion of second year. The inaugural award will be presented to the successful student by HRI representatives at the Equine Careers Event to be held at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus on Wednesday February 11th 2015.

The short video assignment will involve the use of social media to find and engage potential customers, locally, nationally and globally. The video should embrace the theme “What the racing industry means to me” with the aim of encouraging more students to get involved in the racing industry. Horse Racing Ireland will make the final decision on the award of the bursary.

David Wright, HRI Group Human Resource Manager, commented: “Horse Racing Ireland is pleased to be associated with CAFRE, who have embraced in a special way the thoroughbred industry in all its facets and in doing so generated enthusiastic graduates for the industry. We are pleased that we can contribute to the College in a practical way, focusing on young people in the industry.”

Welcoming the launch of the HRI student bursary, HRI Chief Executive, Brian Kavanagh, said: “It’s important to encourage and support students with vision for the Irish racing industry, which is what this bursary aims to do. Those undertaking the Equine Management course hope to work in racing and inspiring students to think about what the racing industry means to them is beneficial both to those taking part and to the industry as a whole.”

Dr Sam Kennedy, Head of Education Service, CAFRE thanked HRI for their willingness to support young people participating in the equine degree programme at Enniskillen Campus. He stated: “We at CAFRE are delighted to welcome HRI here today and are extremely grateful for this fantastic opportunity which HRI is providing for our students. We hope to build on the links made with HRI and keep providing the racing industry with capable enthusiastic employees for the future.”

The UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is pleased to announce the launch of the Equine Ophthalmology Service. In response to the increased demand for specialist consultations for equine eye cases, UC Davis has brought on a dedicated ophthalmology specialist to focus on horses. Previously handled by our top-notch team of multi-species ophthalmologists, horses with eye problems will now be seen by Dr. Mary Lassaline, DVM, PhD, MA, DACVO.

The new Equine Ophthalmology Service provides advanced diagnostics, as well as routine, complex and emergency medical and surgical care to horses with a variety of ocular disorders, including corneal ulcers, corneal and eyelid cancer, equine recurrent uveitis, cataracts, and glaucoma. Since starting the Service in late summer, Dr. Lassaline has hit the ground running and has already attracted a robust stream of patients.

“There certainly is no shortage of equine patients in need of advanced ophthalmology services, so there is a lot of potential to grow the service” said Dr. David Wilson, director of the VMTH. “We feel very fortunate to have recruited such a talented and experienced equine ophthalmologist as Mary to expand the services we can provide to referring veterinarians and horse owners.”

Dr. Lassaline earned her veterinary degree from Michigan State University, after which she completed a one-year medicine and surgery internship at the world-renowned Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Lassaline then completed a residency in veterinary ophthalmology at the University of Florida. Following two years in private practice, she spent the last eight years developing and leading the equine ophthalmology program as a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests span the breadth of equine eye problems, with a particular focus on equine corneal disease.

Are training Shows included?

The Toggi and Champion brands are passionate supporters of equestrianism and equestrian talent and are delighted to add Jason Webb and his team at Australian Horsemanship to their stable of top riders.

Sarah-Jane Fedarb, managing director of Finest Brands International (the company behind the Toggi and Champion brands) comments: “We first came across Jason when one of our team attended one of his clinics with her own horse. She was hugely impressed with Jason’s practical, easy to understand approach to training horses and his focus not only on the immediate end result, but on the whole journey to ensure safer, more progressive training for both horse and rider. It became clear to us that Jason and his ethos of ‘creating a balance between horse & rider’ was an approach that fits perfectly with our Toggi and Champion brands and we’re delighted to support Jason and his team in their work.”

Jason’s training is based around the practicalities of handling and riding horses with confidence and control, which lead to a safe and successful partnership. From his centre in Kent, Jason and his team specialise in starting young horses and retraining horses with behavioural and ridden problems and regularly conduct clinics and demonstrations nationwide.

On his new sponsorship, Jason comments “I’m so delighted to be working with Toggi and Champion as I’ve been a huge fan of their products for many years. My team and I are out in all weathers, all year round so it’s vital that we have the right gear to keep us warm, dry and comfortable, whatever the weather and our Toggi gear does this job to perfection! Safety is also crucially important to me. We have many youngsters and horses with challenging problems coming through the yard each year and it’s vital that my staff and I wear an up to standard riding hat to help keep us safe. I love my new Champion Air-Tech helmet as I can wear it comfortably all day long and with the peace of mind that it is made in Great Britain by Champion – a company with an outstanding reputation for safety.”

Presenting a new bespoke design for ladies only…

By introducing superlative flexibility into a design that offers a fit especially tailored for the female figure, without compromising protection and safety, Champion has designed its most comfortable body protector to date. This exceptional comfort is offered by a darted and tailored bust design, a slim and sculptured underarm for a close contact fit, and a broad shoulder panel with enhanced weight distribution.

However the benefits of the Freedom and Vanguard don’t stop there. Champion’s team of designers have come up with a revolutionary multi layered “Cut-Flex®” manufacturing process to maximise the body protectors Ultra light foams flexibility. In conjunction with this a new “HingeTek®” system has been incorporated into the tail of both the Freedom and Vanguard which allows the bottom of the protector to mould into the nape of the lower back which gives an unparalleled fit when Rider is in contact with the saddle. And by utilising a high-tech Polygiene treated inner lining with its powerful anti-bacterial and anti-odour properties, Champion have ensured that the Freedom and Vanguard will stay fresh 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Both the Freedom and Vanguard offer all these excellent features and benefits and the difference between them is simple. The Vanguard Body Protector is a Tabard design while the Freedom incorporates a zipped front for ease of fitting while dressed for riding. To ensure that the Freedom offers similar levels of adjustability as the Vanguard, 4 elasticated side straps have been incorporated into the design, for great adjustment and the perfect fit.

The Freedom and Vanguard are available in 6 sizes: GL (Girls Large), GXL (Girls X-tra Large), WS (Women Small), WM (Women Medium), WL (Women Large) and WXL (Women X-tra Large) and they are they are available in 3 back lengths.

The Freedom is available in black with silver piping and is priced from £102 – £152 depending on size
The Vanguard in black/ gunmetal and is priced from £85 – £132 depending on size

Quick interview with Caroline Donnelly of Camara Designs…

How long have you been painting and drawing horses?

I first started painting horses when I was a little girl- the chubby carton type but I really starting to focus on them when I was studying for my GCSEs (they were a focal point in GCSE and A level Art exams). After I finished school I started to paint them part time while at uni.. So I have now been painting them for 7 years (or forever lol)!

What is your favourite equine expression and why?

My favourite Equine expression to capture would be the eyes- at rest/ play or work. They are so unique (like a humans eyes- they give character) and you can really tell if a horse is happy or sad by looking in their innocent eyes! I also love action shots- jumping or simply in the ring!

My favourite discipline was always eventing- I was hopeless at Dressage but I loved Cross Country more than anything. I then stuck to the show jumping to prevent embarrassment I then spent a stint in America with a Karen O’Connor pupil- Miss Rebecca Simmons who is the next big thing to watch.. She even tried to straighten out my dressage skills or lack of!!

Can you tell us a little about your horse?

I have my own horse- Blackie aka Rushin Gold and try to ride and compete as much as possible. He was trained by Mrs Toni Donnelly who is a Champion in the Working Hunter ring!!
