Horse Sport Ireland has announced today the list of successful projects that will benefit from its recently advertised Innovation Fund.

The funding for the scheme came from the additional €600,000 allocated by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to Horse Sport Ireland, announced by Minister Simon Coveney in the 2015 budget.

Following public advertisements, applications for 68 projects were received, seeking prize money allocations of in excess of €730,000. Following an adjudication process, 11 projects have been chosen for funding. A full list of the successful projects is below.

HSI Finance Committee Chairman James Kennedy said that it was very positive that so many project applications had been received but unfortunately it meant that difficult decisions had to be made.

“It’s encouraging to see so many applications, and it shows that people in the industry have great ideas to develop the sector.

“We are very pleased that Minister Coveney provided the sector with this extra funding. This allowed HSI to have a fund like this as well as setting up an International Marketing Division and funding a number of other competitions in line with the recommendations of the industry Strategic Plan ‘Reaching New Heights’,” he said.

“I am confident that the Minister will see positive impact from these projects in 2015,” he added.

The evening’s feature speed competition saw the 27 year-old US-based rider claim one of 13 clear rounds in the competition aboard the Spruce Meadows-owned 11 year-old chestnut gelding Quiz. However, though the same horse had delivered victory for Kenny at Wellington just last month, this time he was edged narrowly out of the top spot by in-form American rider Andrew Ramsay on the Dutch-bred Welfare.

Meanwhile, in the Under 25 Grand Prix Semi-Final at Wellington’s Palm Beach Equestrian Centre, Ireland’s 22 year-old Stephen Moore went head-to-head with Germany’s Laurenz Buhl in a tie-breaking jump-off. The two were the only competitors from a starting field of 34 to clear the challenging track set by Irish course designer Alan Wade.

First to go, Buhl and River Dance Semilly completed the short course in a fast time of 45.67 seconds, but dropped a rail at the final fence that left the win in the balance. Moore tried for a clear round, but also had a rail on the course with Fantasy. His time was slower at 45.78 seconds, to put the pair in second place.

Horse Sport Ireland also operates the Irish Sport Horse Studbook.

The McCann family of Hartwell Stud in Co Kildare, who bred and owned the world-renowned show jumping sire, agreed to have DNA samples taken from the horse, who died last September at the age of 29.

They now have two Cruising clones – Cruising Arish and Cruising Encore.

It is understood to be the first time a horse has been cloned in Ireland.

Horse Sport Ireland CEO Damian McDonald said that the Sport Horse sector has always embraced the use of science to breed better horses. Techniques such as Artificial Insemination and latterly, Embryo Transfer, are in wide use in the sport horse sector.

“The international Governing Body, the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), allow clones to compete and we altered the rules of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook in recent years to permit the registration of clones,” he said.

“Cloning won’t be something everyone will embrace but it is another option for breeders and Cruising’s genetics are traditionally Irish, which is important to a cohort of breeders,” he concluded.

Cruising, who jumped on numerous Nations’ Cups for Ireland and finished second in the 1999 World Cup final, sired many famous show jumpers and eventers, including Flexible, Mo Chroí, Mr Medicott and Mr Cruise Control.
